BS in Chemistry Mission Statement The Chemistry Department provides liberal arts and professional education in chemistry. The undergraduate program at the department is dedicated to teaching, scholarship, research and creative endeavors. Through this program, the department delivers a strong theoretical course of study and practical training in the chemical sciences to assure the success of its students in graduate schools, professional schools and employment. Undergraduate students are able to explain the essential facts, principles and theories across the four major areas of chemistry, i.e. analytical, organic, inorganic and physical. In addition, they are strongly encouraged to be engaged in research in these aforementioned areas. The program also plays a central role in the education of students of other majors, including students of Medicine, Health Sciences, Engineering, and Agriculture. Students accepted as chemistry majors must maintain an average of 2.2 (or 70) or above in their first three terms in major courses in order to remain in the program. Students must complete the following minimum requirements: CHEM 201, CHEM 201L, CHEM 211, CHEM 212, CHEM 215, CHEM 216, CHEM 217, CHEM 218, CHEM 220, CHEM 225, CHEM 228, CHEM 229, and CHEM 230, at least two elective courses of the following five courses: CHEM 231, CHEM 232, CHEM 233, CHEM 234 and BIOL 220, in addition to MATH 201, MATH 202, and CMPS 209 or CMPS 200, PHYS 211 and PHYS 211L, 6 credits in the Social Sciences, and 12 credits in the Humanities. -

Keyes, Chair The black brass band parade known as the second line has been a staple of New Orleans culture for nearly 150 years. Through more than a century of social, political and demographic upheaval, the second line has persisted as an institution in the city’s black community, with its swinging march beats and emphasis on collective improvisation eventually giving rise to jazz, funk, and a multitude of other popular genres both locally and around the world. More than any other local custom, the second line served as a crucible in which the participatory, syncretic character of black music in New Orleans took shape. While the beat of the second line reverberates far beyond the city limits today, the neighborhoods that provide the parade’s sustenance face grave challenges to their existence. Ten years after Hurricane Katrina tore up the economic and cultural fabric of New Orleans, these largely poor communities are plagued on one side by underfunded schools and internecine violence, and on the other by the rising tide of post-disaster gentrification and the redlining-in- disguise of neoliberal urban policy. -

A chemical revolution (or rupture, discontinuity, transition) mainly by emplacement, instead of replacement, procedures were identifed by: a radical reinter- pretation of existing thought recognized by contemporaries themselves, which means the appearance of new concepts and the arrival of new theories; the use of new instruments changed the way in which its practitioners looked and worked in the world and through exemplars, new entities were discovered or incorporated; the opening of new subdisci- plines, which produced, separated scientifc communities. -

SH: Then being in America. Q: And where are you now? SH: I'm in Toronto. Q: Oh, okay. For some reason I thought you were in New York, so-- SH: No. It almost gets so frustrating that by the time you do get called, you don't wanna fuckin' talk, good God. (both laugh) Q: Well, you got through. You're not very late. That's great. Anyway, well, I wanted to talk to you some about the new record and such, and then about your youth here in Indiana, so-- SH: Okay. Q: Let's talk about the new record first. How frustrating is it to know that you've made a better, more interesting followup record and it's gonna be much more difficult to get people to hear it? SH: I think that's something we were aware of when we went in to make the record. I think the one thing that Roger stated about the first record which rang so true is it's a good progressive growth of the band. He talks about the first record being, it was the musical placenta. It was basically the first songs that we ever had written and recorded together. And I think that since then we have managed to hone in on making more of a record this time around, opposed to a record with a few singles on it. I personally like this new record a lot more than I do the first one. The first record was a good reflection of the time we were at the time we made it, but I think that this record has more of a mix of styles, which is the way we like it. -

My whole family was going on a trip to the Adirondacks in our car. We were almost there when I said, “Mom, I think I’m going to throw up.” My mom said, “Okay, I have to go to the bathroom.” So we stopped at a gas station in a town called No Name. My mom went in the bathroom, but I threw up outside on the bathroom door. So my mom opened up the door and throw-up dripped down onto the floor. Then we ran and jumped into the car. Knucklehead Warning: Do not play Minecraft in the car for 5 hours straight! 2. We are here! Yay! We made it two hours later. “Will, you have to go on the ATIS trip today.” “Okay.” “We’re at the water hold,” said a counselor. “Yay, we get to eat lunch!” I said, as we got our lunches out and sat on a big rock. But one kid slipped and slid and slid into the deepest, coldest part of the water hole. 3. Okay, so there was this ATIS counselor who was swimming naked in a public lake, and the kids and the counselors thought it would be funny to take his clothes and canoe off without him. Then they left his underpants on an island. Then he went naked onto the island and got the underpants.
