Ebook A Devil On One Shoulder And An Angel On The Other: The Story Of Shannon Hoon And Freeware One of the most tragic stories of the 1990’s rock world was that of singer Shannon Hoon, and his band, Blind Melon. Despite scoring one of the decade’s most enduring singles and videos, “No Rain,â€Âand a quadruple platinum hit with their 1992 self-titled debut album (in addition to touring alongside rock’s biggest names), Hoon could not overcome a dangerous drug addiction. Only two records into a promising career, Hoon was dead from an overdose at the age of 28. ‘A Devil on One Shoulder and an Angel on the Other’ is the first book to tell the group’s storyâ€â€culled from over 50 exclusive interviews (including the surviving band members and those closest to the band) and featuring many never-before-seen photos. “I am honored that Greg has painstakingly accounted for what the hell happened during those crazy times. He has summed up all the chaos, jubilation, and paranoia that is Blind Melon.†-Brad Smith, Blind Melon bassist Paperback: 344 pages Publisher: Greg Prato (September 17, 2008) Language: English ISBN-10: 0615252397 ISBN-13: 978-0615252391 Product Dimensions: 6 x 0.8 x 9 inches Shipping Weight: 1.3 pounds (View shipping rates and policies) Average Customer Review: 4.7 out of 5 stars 97 customer reviews Best Sellers Rank: #455,814 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #168 in Books > Arts & Photography > Music > Musical Genres > Heavy Metal #978 in Books > Biographies & Memoirs > Historical > Europe > Great Britain #1416 in Books > Arts & Photography > Music > History & Criticism "People who know and love Shannon will enjoy reliving the moments chronicled. -

Rhythm, Dance, and Resistance in the New Orleans Second Line
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles “We Made It Through That Water”: Rhythm, Dance, and Resistance in the New Orleans Second Line A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Ethnomusicology by Benjamin Grant Doleac 2018 © Copyright by Benjamin Grant Doleac 2018 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION “We Made It Through That Water”: Rhythm, Dance, and Resistance in the New Orleans Second Line by Benjamin Grant Doleac Doctor of Philosophy in Ethnomusicology University of California, Los Angeles, 2018 Professor Cheryl L. Keyes, Chair The black brass band parade known as the second line has been a staple of New Orleans culture for nearly 150 years. Through more than a century of social, political and demographic upheaval, the second line has persisted as an institution in the city’s black community, with its swinging march beats and emphasis on collective improvisation eventually giving rise to jazz, funk, and a multitude of other popular genres both locally and around the world. More than any other local custom, the second line served as a crucible in which the participatory, syncretic character of black music in New Orleans took shape. While the beat of the second line reverberates far beyond the city limits today, the neighborhoods that provide the parade’s sustenance face grave challenges to their existence. Ten years after Hurricane Katrina tore up the economic and cultural fabric of New Orleans, these largely poor communities are plagued on one side by underfunded schools and internecine violence, and on the other by the rising tide of post-disaster gentrification and the redlining-in- disguise of neoliberal urban policy. -

This Week the Beatles Anthology, Coming Soon to a TV Set Near You, Is Unlikely to Unleash a New Wave of Beatlemania
E IN RADIO OCTOBER 2 This Week The Beatles Anthology, coming soon to a TV set near you, is unlikely to unleash a new wave of Beatlemania. But for :hose of us old and lucky enough to have been caught up in that British Invasion of '64, it'll be a nice revisit to those times, espec ally with Capitol's release of the first two of six CDs of Beatles rari- ties. For those who missed out on the Beatles in their prime, this is their best shot at the full story. And for the companies involved in the production- Apple Corps, Inc., ABC-TV, and Capitol/EMI-it's a big -backs bonanza. They are taking no chances, how- ever. As we report inside, the total cost of the market- ing of Anthology will be around $20 million. Our package, put together by our managing editor, Ben Fong -Torres, gives you a head start on all the hype, and includes revisits with Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Yoko Ono; with Top 40 at the height of the craziness, and with Dave Rothstein, a Gavin staffer who's not ashamed that, at 40 -something, he's still a Beatlemaniac. In News, Danny Goldberg (top) takes the helm at Mercury Records. Pearl Jam tops a poll of music executives; Entertairment Weekly offers its own power poll, and music loses Blind Melon's Shannon Hoon (mid- dle). Rhymes and Linkin Park recently collaborated on “We Made It,” the first single and video from Rhymes’ upcoming album, Blessed. By touring together, Linkin Park & Busta are taking a cue from the chorus of their song: “…we took it on the road…”. As recently pointed out in Rolling Stone’s “Summer Tour Guide,” the tour will see nine acts joining rock superstars Linkin Park, who are also offering concertgoers a digital souvenir pack that includes a recording of the band’s entire set. As the band’s co-lead vocalist Mike Shinoda told the magazine, “That puts extra pressure on us to make sure our set is different every night.” The fifth installation of Linkin Park’s raging road show will see them headlining an all-star bill that features former Soundgarden/Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell, electro-rockers The Bravery and Ashes Divide featuring Billy Howerdel, known for his work with A Perfect Circle. -

“Knucklehead” Stories Mostly True, Sometimes Exaggerated Tales
“Knucklehead” Stories Mostly true, sometimes exaggerated tales Written by 2016-17 third graders in the Lower School Library at Saint Ann’s School Inspired by Jon Scieszka’s memoir Knucklehead “An Adirondack Adventure” By Will Agger 1. My whole family was going on a trip to the Adirondacks in our car. We were almost there when I said, “Mom, I think I’m going to throw up.” My mom said, “Okay, I have to go to the bathroom.” So we stopped at a gas station in a town called No Name. My mom went in the bathroom, but I threw up outside on the bathroom door. So my mom opened up the door and throw-up dripped down onto the floor. Then we ran and jumped into the car. Knucklehead Warning: Do not play Minecraft in the car for 5 hours straight! 2. We are here! Yay! We made it two hours later. “Will, you have to go on the ATIS trip today.” “Okay.” “We’re at the water hold,” said a counselor. “Yay, we get to eat lunch!” I said, as we got our lunches out and sat on a big rock. But one kid slipped and slid and slid into the deepest, coldest part of the water hole. 3. Okay, so there was this ATIS counselor who was swimming naked in a public lake, and the kids and the counselors thought it would be funny to take his clothes and canoe off without him. Then they left his underpants on an island. Then he went naked onto the island and got the underpants. -
