Miramonte 32 | De Anza 20 Friday, August 17, 2018 ORINDA, CA The Matadors opened their season at home by hosting the De Anza Dons. The offense wasted no time getting on the board, showcasing a balanced attack resulting in an opening drive score on a 33-yard run by Henry Vacakis. Then, it was the defense’s turn to show it’s strength by forcing a 3 and out on De Anza’s first possession only to give the ball back on a muffed punt. The Matador D stiffened again with a forced fumble caused by Ben Schmiedt and recovered by Zach Barker. On the ensuring drive, the offense scored again on a swing pass from AJ Fraser to Tyler Lowe for a TD. The defense forced another 3 and out and the offense once again took advantage on yet another TD strike from Fraser, this time 38 yards to Reed Callister. The De Anza Dons did their best to take back momentum by scoring on a long TD pass and then intercepting a pass for a pick 6, bringing the score to 19-14 Matadors at the half. The defense continued its strong play into the second half with a flurry of sacks while the offense tried to regain it’s earlier success, breaking through late in the third quarter on a TD run by Henry Vacakis as well as midway through the fourth quarter, scoring on a short pass from Fraser to Callister. De Anza added a late touchdown, leading to a final score of Miramonte 32 /De Anza 14. Overall, it was a great opening day win for the Matadors with plenty of contributions from both sides of the ball! VARSITY HIGHLIGHTS

Miramonte 38 | HILLSDALE 6 Friday, August 24, 2018 — SAN MATEO, CA The Matadors traveled to San Mateo to take on the Hillsdale Fighting Knights on Friday, August 24. Defense took the field first and quickly forced the Knights to punt. Miramonte took advantage of great field position and scored on a 1-yard TD run by Henry Vacakis putting the Matadors up 6-0. On the ensuing two Knights drives, the defense forced consecutive 3 and outs. The offense then drove down to the 8-yard line only to have a field goal try blocked. After more stout play by the defense, the offense returned the favor on yet another score by Henry Vacakis; this time on a 10-yard pass by AJ Fraser bringing the score to 12-0 Matadors. Two drives later, Fraser threw his second TD pass of the night to Matt Meredith on an 18-yard strike. The offense wasn’t done yet and added yet another score on a short pass from Fraser to Tyler Lowe, who broke several tackles on his way to pay dirt. Halftime score: Matadors 24 / Knights 0. The second half was more of the same from the Matador offense, scoring quickly on a 11-yard TD run by Tyler Lowe featuring a huge hole opened up by the offensive line. After a successful two-point conversion, the Matadors found themselves up 32-0. Not to be outdone, the defense continued to dominate; allowing very few yards and only a single first down. Early in the fourth, QB Matt Meredith was inserted into the game and threw a 11-yard TD pass to Tyler Zwahlen bringing the score to 38-0 Matadors. A late garbage time TD run by the Knights rounded out the night making the final Matadors 38 / Knights 6. A great team effort overall! Go Mats! VARSITY HIGHLIGHTS

Miramonte 13 | LAS LOMAS 41 Friday, August 31, 2018 WALNUT CREEK, CA With a strong start to the season, the 2-0 Matadors carried momentum and hope into Friday’s game against a talented and undefeated Las Lomas Knights squad. Though they played well, moving the ball on offense and making some key stops on defense, the Mats eventually succumbed 41-13. The Knights jumped ahead early with two rushing TD’s by their Division 1-bound running back. Matador defensive back Charlie Hawkins prevented a third Knight touchdown with no time left on the clock at the end of the first quarter with an interception in the end zone, punctuated by a gutsy 23-yard runback. The Matadors settled down in the second quarter, mounting a long drive into the Knights’ red zone, led by the accurate passing by AJ Fraser, and playing solid defense to keep the Knights quiet. The second half was a fireworks show, with both teams moving the ball via ground and air. Running back Tyler Lowe put the Matadors on the scoreboard near the end of the third quarter with a 25-yard, juke-filled TD run. With two minutes left in the game, Matt Meredith, playing quarterback in relief, threw an 11- yard strike to Charlie Hawkins in the corner of the end zone. Other notable contributions included: Tyler Lowe, Keilan Stone, Justin Alvarado (who also returned three kickoffs), and Noah Nushi leading the team in tackles; Tyler Lowe rushing for over a century, with 106 yards; Scott Linney, Charlie Hawkins, Matt Meredith, and Keilan Stone leading the team in receiving yards; quarterbacks AJ Fraser and Matt Meredith combining for nearly 200 passing yards; defensive end Ethan Fishlow recovering a fumble; and Joe McIntyre booting a PAT. 2018 JUNIOR VARSITY ROSTER

Miramonte 22 | DE ANZA 16 Friday, August 17, 2018 ORINDA, CA The Miramonte Matadors JV Football team opened their 2018 season with a home win vs. the De Anza Dons winning 22-16. The Matadors’ first touchdown was a quarterback keeper by Aidan Browne followed by a PAT by kicker Caleb Wilday. The Dons answered in the second quarter as quarterback Sam- my Thayer completed a pass to Elias Gaxiola. Thayer then converted the 2-point conversion by completing a pass to Imanuel Hunter. The Dons had the edge at half time, 8-7. The Matadors were able to outscore the Dons in the second half after two rushing touchdowns by Jake Doran, an extra point kick by Caleb Wilday and a 2-point rushing conversion also by Jake Doran. The Dons solo touchdown in the second half was a 49-yard rushing play by Jaylen Lotts. The Dons were threatening to score again with time running off the clock however the win was secured for the Matadors by Jack Lewis’ second sack of the game. JUNIOR VARSITY HIGHLIGHTS Miramonte 22 | HILLSDALE 7 Friday, August 24, 2018 HILLSDALE, CA The Matadors were rudely welcomed by the host Fighting Knights on a gusty late afternoon in Hillsdale. After receiving the kick-off the Fighting Knights scored on a 3rd-down 47-yard pass play; however, the TD was nullified by an illegal block-in-the-back penalty. The Matadors’ offensive performance was marked by impressive play by the offensive line which opened up space for Jake Doran and Aidan Browne. But the first score of the game was credited to the Matador defense as Jack Lewis recorded the first defensive score of 2018 via a safety. After Aidan Browne’s rushing TD the first quarter ended with the Matadors on top 9-0 thanks to a converted extra point by Caleb Wilday. During the second quarter the Matadors increased their lead on another TD by Aidan Browne on a QB keeper. Then Hillsdale responded with an 86-yard TD pass to end the first half scoring with the Matadors leading 15-7. The Matador defense continued their stingy ways in the second half prohibiting Hillsdale from scoring. The highlights for the Mat- adors included impressive rushing by Jake Doran and Benjamin Chin facilitated by continued dominant play by the offensive line. Jake Doran scored the half’s only TD on a 30-yard rushing play which took valuable time off the clock. The win was secured by an impressive kick-off by Caleb Wilday that pinned Hillsdale deep in their own territory, and also by Ethan Joga’s interception. JUNIOR VARSITY HIGHLIGHTS

Miramonte 14 | LAS LOMAS 14 Friday, August 31, 2018 WALNUT CREEK, CA A physical game unfolded on August 31, at the home of the Las Lomas Knights. The Knights seemed to have the size advantage; however, the Matadors had the edge where it counted. The heart. The beginning of the first quarter saw the Matadors’ de- fense holding strong against the Knights. Late in the first quarter, the Matador offense came to life, with runs from Jake Doran and a 45-yard touchdown pass from Emmet Keady to Bradley Nestal. Caleb Wilday’s extra point put the Matadors on top, 7-0. After the Matador defense again held the Knights to very little yardage, the Matador offense took over. The Matadors’ second scoring drive was capped off by a rushing TD by Jake Doran running behind a strong effort by the offensive line. Caleb Wilday was able to con- vert the extra point. Neither team was able to score in the remaining minutes of the first half. At the half, Matadors 14-0. The third quarter remained scoreless, with notable defense from the line and the critical stop on 4th down by Don- ald Frank. Matadors 14-0. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Knights scored on a 15-yard TD pass. The missed extra point kick gave the Matadors an 8-point edge, 14-6. The Knights were lucky when the Matadors’ punt was blocked and returned 48 yards for a second Knights TD. Try- ing to foil a 2-point conversion, the Matadors were forced to take their third and final timeout which would prove to be a key factor in the final outcome. The Knights were successful: 14-14. On the Matadors’ final possession and with solid playing from QBs, Aidan Brown and Anthony Ricevuto, RB Jake Doran and WR Hayden Simon, the Matadors compiled a 14-play drive deep into Knights territory. The Matadors’ drive ended on an incomplete pass to the end-zone on a 4th down as they were unable to stop the clock to send out their field goal unit. The final score of 14-14. www.dougsenzhistorytutor.com Love you! [email protected] Dad, Mom, Ben, 925-890-8088 Nick and Anna Dear Miramonte Parents: The Miramonte Boosters Club and YOUR student athletes need your help! THANK YOU to the nearly 350 MHS families who have donated to Boosters for the 2018-19 school year, roughly 50% of the families who have a student-athlete. If your daughter or son plays a sport at Miramonte, we need your support! The Boosters Club has committed over $100,000 to fund much-needed equipment and support services for all of the teams. Without 100% participation, we won’t have enough money to meet these needs. BOOSTERS FUNDS GO TO ALL SPORTS OFFERED AT MHS • Sports-related necessities such as balls, nets, mats, training videos, practice equipment, covers, timers, and weight room equipment. • Athletic trainer, medical supplies, and the strength & conditioning coach—for use by ALL student-athletes at MHS. Boosters cares about the safety of our athletes and covers the cost of concussion screening. New this year, we will also provide strength and agility screening by Sparta Science. • Funding for important capital items like goals, benches, batting cages, scoreboards, timing systems, and the newly purchased sound systems on the field and inside the main gym. For those of you that have not yet signed up for Boosters, please take a moment to make a donation and become part of the TEAM BEHIND THE TEAMS! The Boosters Club is a nonprofit organization and donations are tax deductible. THANK YOU!

925.253.1320 REMEMBERING JOHN PEYOVICH

Coach John Peyovich, “Peyo,” is a local guy who grew up in Albany. Peyo has coached baseball and other sports for over 35 years. This would have been John’s 11th year coach- ing football at Miramonte. John never made the conversation about himself, but always about those around him. He was a home-town guy. He always rooted for the home team. He LOVED sports, whether that was playing, watching, coaching, or gambling. He loved to laugh. Peyo loved Football. He loved coaching football—he loved talking football and he loved laughing with the coaches out a practice. He loved working with those kids. "We’ll remember He really loved grinding on the officials during games— John as a man even when he couldn’t hide so well on his scooter. who faced his John was an exceptional athlete. He is an Albany High School Hall of Famer and Laney College athlete. He was a physically strong guy. But, it was his INNER strength that situation with made him a great competitor. He tried to make our kids understand how important that inner strength was to being a great competitor—on and off the field. He would often point class, bravery, a THAT out during his colorful half time speeches, or some would argue, his EXTREMELY positive attitude, colorful practice speeches. and LOTS of We’re ALL so grateful that THE HUNDREDS of foot-ballers he coached these past 10 years had the chance to spend time with him—especially these last few years, when they humor." could see what real courage and class looked like. PEYO HAS CHANGED LIVES! John often said among the coaches, “I want these young men to grow up to be great husbands, great fathers, and good people. He certainly prac- ticed what he preached. He had “that gift” to connect with anyone, young or old. You could see that connection down on the 20-yard line Friday nights at Varsity football games—the in-town alums, family, or friends would always come down to the 20, give Peyo a hug, grab a handful of candy from his basket, and talk to him. We’ll remember John as a man who faced his situation with class, bravery, a positive attitude, and LOTS of humor. He NEVER stopped laughing, or smiling. What a great example to everyone, of how a person can choose to face adversity in life, and, what a great profile in courage and class for the young men that he coached. John and his wife Kerri were happily married for 29 years. They were high school sweet- hearts. They have three children, Scott, Michael, Kelly—all Miramonte grads. The family resides in Orinda.

Go Mats!
