In order to achieve this three-part objective, we will read materials from various perspectives and of different genres. We will devote some time to Islamic history, because even if a religion is conceived in terms of universals and ideals, its actual manifestation is always tempered by historical, cultural and social context. We will explore the meaning of Islam as a worldview and a moral system through examining its doctrinal, ritual, philosophical, ethical and spiritual dimensions. This course is designed for students with no prior knowledge of Islam. Course Textbook (available at the Co-Op): • William E. Shepard, Introducing Islam (2nd edition, Routledge, 2014) Additional readings available on Canvas: • Fazlur Rahman, Major Themes of the Qur’an • Imam al-Ghazali (d.1111), Inner Dimensions of Islamic Worship (The Islamic Foundation) • John A. Williams, The Word of Islam (1st edition, University of Texas Press, 1994) Grading Attendance 20% Midterm Exam 25% Survey Project 25% - Project Proposal 5% - Survey Questions 5% - Survey Responses 7% - Final Report 8% Final Exam 30% 1 Attendance: Regular attendance will be expected. You are permitted two unexcused absences without detriment to your grade; any absences beyond this may count against your attendance grade. Exceptions will be only made at my discretion and with documentation in the event of serious illness/surgery, death in the family, emergencies, and the like. Any SSD paperwork must be brought to me within the first two weeks of classes. Attendance will commence at the start of each class period. If you walk in after attendance has been taken, then it is your responsibility to inform the responsible TA of your presence as soon as possible on/after the same class period. Exams: These will cover both readings and lectures. The midterm will take the entire class period, and the final will be given at the Registrar-designated time slot. If you arrive late, you will have less time to do the test. Make-up tests and exams will only be permitted at my discretion. If you have a scheduling conflict, you must obtain permission from me at least two weeks in advance of the exam. Emergencies should be documented and I or a TA should be notified immediately. Survey Project: During the semester, you will design a project in which you survey participants on their knowledge of a certain topic or theme in Islam. The instructions for this will be available on Canvas. Communication You are responsible for any announcements made in class, sent out via email, or made on Canvas. This includes announcements made during any portion of class for which you are absent, or email messages that you fail to receive. It is your responsibility to provide me a valid email address and to check it regularly. I will assume all Registrar-held email addresses are valid unless you tell me otherwise. Siren Song1 Reviewed by Taimur Rahman2 The title of this book is extremely misleading. This is not a book about siren songs. Or perhaps it is, but not in the way you think. The book draws you in, dressed as a biography of prominent Pakistani female singers. And then, you find yourself trapped into a complex discussion of post-colonial philosophy stretching across time (in terms of philosophy) and space (in terms of continents). Hence, any review of this book cannot be a simple retelling of its contents but begs the reader to engage in some seriously strenuous thinking. I begin my review, therefore, not with what is in, but with what is not in the book - the debate that shapes the book, and to which this book is a stimulating response.

• Shah Hussain - Poems
Classic Poetry Series Shah Hussain - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Shah Hussain(1538–1599) Shah Hussain was a Punjabi Sufi poet who is regarded as a Sufi saint. He was the son of Sheikh Usman, a weaver, and belonged to the Dhudha clan of Rajputs. He was born in Lahore (present-day Pakistan). He is considered a pioneer of the Kafi form of Punjabi poetry. Shah Hussain's love for a Brahmin boy called "Madho" or "Madho Lal" is famous, and they are often referred to as a single person with the composite name of "Madho Lal Hussain". Madho's tomb lies next to Hussain's in the shrine. His tomb and shrine lies in Baghbanpura, adjacent to the Shalimar Gardens. His Urs (annual death anniversary) is celebrated at his shrine every year during the "Mela Chiraghan" ("Festival of Lights"). Kafis of Shah Hussain Hussain's poetry consists entirely of short poems known as Kafis. A typical Hussain Kafi contains a refrain and some rhymed lines. The number of rhymed lines is usually between four and ten. Only occasionally is a longer form adopted. Hussain's Kafis are also composed for, and have been set to, music deriving from Punjabi folk music. Many of his Kafis are part of the traditional Qawwali repertoire. His poems have been performed as songs by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Abida Parveen and Noor Jehan, among others. Here are three examples, which draw on the love story of Heer Ranjha: "Ni Mai menoon Khedeyan di gal naa aakh Ranjhan mera, main Ranjhan di, Khedeyan noon koodi jhak Lok janey Heer kamli hoi, Heeray da var chak" "Do not talk of the Khedas to me, mother.

Fizzy Drinks and Sufi Music: Abida Parveen in Coke Studio Pakistan By Zainub Beg A Thesis Submitted to Saint Mary’s University, K’jipuktuk/Halifax, Nova Scotia in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Theology and Religious Studies. December 2020, Halifax, Nova Scotia Copyright Zainub Beg, 2020 Approved: Dr. Syed Adnan Hussain Supervisor Approved: Dr. Reem Meshal Examiner Approved: Dr. Sailaja Krishnamurti Reader Date: December 21, 2020 1 Fizzy Drinks and Sufi Music: Abida Parveen in Coke Studio Pakistan by Zainub Beg Abstract Abida Parveen, often referred to as the Queen of Sufi music, is one of the only female qawwals in a male-dominated genre. This thesis will explore her performances for Coke Studio Pakistan through the lens of gender theory. I seek to examine Parveen’s blurring of gender, Sufism’s disruptive nature, and how Coke Studio plays into the two. I think through the categories of Islam, Sufism, Pakistan, and their relationship to each other to lead into my analysis on Parveen’s disruption in each category. I argue that Parveen holds a unique position in Pakistan and Sufism that cannot be explained in binary terms. • A Critical Appraisal of Zakir Naik's Islamic Evangelism
e-ISSN 2289-6023 International Journal of Islamic Thought ISSN 2232-1314 Vol. 15: (June) 2019 9 2018 201 A Critical Appraisal of Zakir Naik’s Islamic Evangelism August January 6 10 MAZIAH MUSTAPHA* & MOHD ABBAS ABDUL RAZAK1 Received: Received: ABSTRACT 1 Accepted: Though Islam is a religion against compulsion in inviting others into its fold, but it allows to a certain degree for Muslim scholars to engage in any form of peaceful, ethical and intellectual debate/discourse with people of other faith. Ever since this message was communicated through the Qur’an, there appeared in the Muslim world many intellectuals who engaged people of other faith in discussing issues related to God and spirituality. While the Muslim world still celebrates the contribution of past renowned Muslim scholars in the area of comparative religion, this small-scale research is designed to investigate the approaches, contributions and controversies that surround Naik who is a contemporary Muslim scholar of comparative religion. Even though many recognize his intellectual competency in discussing other religions, but there are people around the globe who find his public lecture provocative, cynical and disparaging towards other religions. Through this qualitative study the researchers intend to conduct a critical appraisal on Naik’s religious propagation. Besides that, the researchers will also analyze some of the criticisms hurled at him. The critical analysis of the research will objectively discuss Naik’s method of preaching, personality, style of public lecture, etc. The textual-analysis method will be employed to interpret the pertinent data of this research that come in the form of Naik’s public lectures and written documents.
