PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME TEACHER ACTIVITY GUIDE 2019-2020 EDITIOn SEATTLE SEAHAWKS Team History When the Seattle Seahawks took the field for the first time in the 1976 season, it marked the culmination of a quest for a National Football League franchise that had its roots in the Pacific Northwest metropolis as early as 1957. That is when discussion first began about the possibilities of constructing a domed stadium that would assure a major league sports franchise for the city. On June 4, 1974, the NFL awarded its 28th franchise to Seattle to play in the 64,984-seat Kingdome. A civic suggestion campaign netted 20,365 entries and 1,741 different names, but “Seahawks” was selected and announced on June 17, 1975. Just a little more than two months later, after a 27-day sale, the season ticket campaign was shut off with 59,000 tickets sold. On January 3, 1976, Jack Patera, who had been a Minnesota assistant coach, was named the team’s first head coach. The Seahawks finished 2-12 in 1976, when they played in the NFC, and 5-9 in 1977, when they moved into the AFC. The Seahawks had winning 9-7 records in both 1978 and 1979 and Patera was named NFL Coach of the Year the second year. The strike-shortened 1982 season proved to be a transitional year for all of pro football, but no club fit the transitional description better than the Seahawks. Patera was removed after six-plus years as head coach. Mike McCormack finished the season as interim head coach and then was replaced in 1983 by Chuck Knox, who guided the Seahawks to an 83-67-0 record in nine seasons up through the 1991 campaign.

PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME TEACHER ACTIVITY GUIDE 2019-2020 EDITIOn ATLAnTA FALCOnS Team History The date of June 30, 1965 will always be remembered as a most significant day in Atlanta’s sports history. That day, the National Football League awarded its 15th franchise to the city, marking an end to a long struggle by the Georgia capital city to obtain a professional football team. The franchise was awarded to 41-year-old Rankin M. Smith, a successful life insurance executive, for $8.5 million. One of Smith’s first orders of business was to announce a contest to provide a nickname for the new team. The name “Falcons” was suggested by many, but a school teacher from Griffin, Ga. was declared the winner. “The Falcon is proud and dignified,” she wrote, “with great courage and fight. It never drops its prey. It is deadly and has a great sporting tradition.” Excited Georgia fans showed their enthusiasm and appreciation by buying season tickets in record numbers. By Christmas Eve, when the Falcons cut off a brief 54-day ticket sale requiring almost no promotion, an NFL record had been established for a new team with the sale of 45,000 season tickets. Minnesota was the previous record-holder with 26,000 sales in 1961. Midway through the ticket campaign, the Falcons participated in their first NFL draft on November 27, 1965. Their first pick was an Outland Trophy-winning linebacker from the University of Texas, Tommy Nobis. Nobis was also drafted by Houston of the American Football League but he signed a Falcons contract on December 14.

January 26, 2021 SUPER BOWL LV COMMUNITY EVENTS TO MAKE POSITIVE IMPACT IN TAMPA BAY REGION THROUGH VIRTUAL AND PHYSICALLY-DISTANCED IN-PERSON EVENTS, EFFORTS FOCUS ON SOCIAL JUSTICE, SUSTAINABILITY, THE FIGHT AGAINST HUNGER, YOUTH WELLNESS, MILITARY APPRECIATION, AMONG OTHERS NEW YORK – Super Bowl LV will look different than previous years due to changes brought forth from COVID-19 safety protocols, but the NFL will continue to impact the Tampa Bay community in positive ways in coordination with CDC guidelines. In the weeks preceding the game, more than 20 charitable activities and community outreach events will enrich the community and provide lasting legacies. Super Bowl Week activities include community projects made possible by NFL Foundation Super Bowl Legacy Grants and the Tampa Bay Super Bowl LV Host Committee, community greening projects, a Salute to Service event at MacDill Air Force Base, a virtual NFL PLAY 60 Kids Day and the announcement of the annual Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award presented by Nationwide winner. The NFL and Feeding Tampa Bay (FTB) partnered to create ‘Huddle to Tackle Hunger,” a Super Bowl LV initiative to combat food insecurity in the region, an issue that has been exacerbated by the pandemic. As a part of this program, the NFL Foundation made a $250,000 donation to FTB to both assist in supporting local restaurants that have been significantly affected by COVID-19 and provide meals to those that need it most. The program will run for 44 weeks following Super Bowl LV. In addition, the NFL and FTB have launched a volunteer sweepstakes for a chance to attend Super Bowl LV that closes February 3 and will host two volunteer events to encourage local residents to sign up to volunteer with FTB to help fight hunger within their community.

  • Giants Announce 2021 Schedule by Michael Eisen
Giants Announce 2021 Schedule By Michael Eisen EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Three prime time road games, including Monday night contests against Super Bowl LV participants Kansas City and Tampa Bay, and three NFC East games in the last four weeks, two at home, highlight the Giants’ 2021 schedule, which was announced today. The third night game is at Washington on Thursday night in Week 2. With the expansion of the NFL schedule, each team will play 17 games this season. The Giants will play eight home games and nine road games. Their three-game preseason includes two at home. “Once you first see the schedule you get excited,” said Joe Judge, whose initial season as the Giants’ coach ended with a 6-10 record and second place finish in the NFC East. “It starts to become real in terms of not just knowing the opponents you’re going to play, but when you’re going to play them. You start thinking about the opener, you start looking at your division games, you start mapping out the west coach trip and the longer trips on the road. You start thinking about the best way of setting up the team travel. You start looking at some of the short weeks coming off Monday night games and how you’re going to map out your practice that week.” What else does Judge look for as he studies the schedule? “The first thing you look at in terms of road games, how they all lay out – the distance of the trips, are they back-to-back, the short weeks associated with it,” Judge said.
