I used the following ‘posters’ to create the above map display that encouraged all my children, and lots of others around our school, talking about reading and geography. Please feel free to use and adapt as you see fit. ☺ Wollaton Hall in Nottinghamshire, England. Wollaton Hall, in Nottinghamshire, England was used as the location for Wayne Manor in the most recent Batman movie trilogy! Wayne Manor is the home of Bruce Wayne (Batman) and, in the comics, is located in the fictional city of Gotham. Afghanistan. Tony Stark is given the electromagnet that becomes his key strength to prevent shrapnel from a wound reaching is heart whilst being held captive in a cave system in Afghanistan. It is this moment that ultimately leads to the creation of the Iron Man! Forest Hills, New York. Peter Parker is orphaned aged 6 and goes to live with his aunt and uncle (May and Ben) in a New York suburb called Forest Hills. It is in New York that he is bitten by a radioactive spider, gaining the superpowers that lead to him becoming Spiderman! Sydney, Australia. The actor Hugh Jackman, famous for playing the role of Wolverine in the X-Men movies, was born in Sydney, the largest city in Australia! The X-Men are a group of superheroes, considered to be ‘mutants’ – a human subspecies – who have superpowers because of the X-gene. Metropolis, Illinois. Superman lives in the fictional city of Metropolis, named after a small town in the US state of Illinois. Superman arrives on planet Earth as a baby after his home planet is destroyed. He is adopted by Jonathan and Martha Kent who name him Clark Kent before discovering his super strength and other powers! Wakanda, Africa. The Black Panther, also known as T’Challa, is the King and protector of the fictional African nation of Wakanda. Wakanda is a land-locked, sub- Saharan country. The nation has been isolated for hundreds of years and is now considered the most technologically-advanced county on the planet. The North Atlantic Ocean. Aquaman is the son of an Atlantean Queen and it is his birthright to become King of Atlantis. Atlantis is a lost, underwater Kingdom located deep beneath the surface of the North Atlantic Ocean. Antarctica. The Fantastic Four are a group of scientists who gain superpowers after being exposed to cosmic radiation. They set up a headquarters in Antarctica in order to conduct potentially dangerous experiments with mixed results. Shanghai, China. Ling Lei, also known as Aero, is a new Chinese superhero created by Marvel. By day she works as an architect, but at night she uses her ability to control air currents to protect China’s largest city from all manner of villain! The Amazon, Brazil. Wonder Woman, also known as Diana of Themyscira, is a superhero with the power of the Gods, carved out of a piece of clay! She is also Princess of the Amazons, a huge area of rainforest in Brazil, and stands for love, peace and truth. .

“Why So Serious?” Comics, Film and Politics, Or the Comic Book Film As the Answer to the Question of Identity and Narrative in a Post-9/11 World
ABSTRACT “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD by Kyle Andrew Moody This thesis analyzes a trend in a subgenre of motion pictures that are designed to not only entertain, but also provide a message for the modern world after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The analysis provides a critical look at three different films as artifacts of post-9/11 culture, showing how the integration of certain elements made them allegorical works regarding the status of the United States in the aftermath of the attacks. Jean Baudrillard‟s postmodern theory of simulation and simulacra was utilized to provide a context for the films that tap into themes reflecting post-9/11 reality. Batman Year One Proprosal by Larry and Andy
BATMAN YEAR ONE PROPROSAL BY LARRY AND ANDY WACHOWSKI The scene is Gotham City, in the past. A party is going on and from it descends Thomas Wayne with his wife Martha, and son Bruce. They are talking, with Bruce chatting away about how he wants to see The Mark of Zorro again. Obviously they have just come from a movie premiere. As they turn a corner to their car, they are met by a hooded gunman who tries holding them up. There is a struggle and the Wayne parents are murdered in a bloodbath. Bruce is left there, when he is met by a police officer. There is a screech and a bat flies overhead... Twenty years have passed. Bruce is now twenty‐eight and quite dynamic. The main character has been travelling the world, training for a war on crime, to avenge his parents' deaths. He is at the Ludlow International Airport, where his butler Alfred picks him up. The two drive to Wayne Manor, just outside of Gotham. Bruce watches the city from the distance. The scene moves to downtown Gotham, where Bruce is wearing a hockey mask and black clothes. A fight breaks out between him and a pimp which leads to Bruce escaping to a rotting building. Bleeding badly, he doesn't know whether to continue his crusade against crime. A screech fills the area and a bat dives at him, knocking him onto an old chair. Bruce realises his destiny... The opening credits feature Bruce at Wayne Manor, slamming down a hammer on scrap metal, moulding it into shape.
