Non-starters: Scotson (GFC) and De Plus (TJV). Vini Zabù-KTM’s Stojnic and Tortomasi clip off right after the start, just as they did yesterday. The gap deepens quickly: at km 5, they are already 3’50” up the road; at km 8: 3’43”, at km 12: 4’18”; at km 18: 3’46”. The situation settles, at km 30 the leading duo are 3’15” up the road. Average speed after one hour of racing: 38.400 km/h. Intermediate Sprint (Shawka – km 47.8) Stojnic claims the sprint ahead of his fellow-breaker, Tortomasi. Kragh Andersen comes in third and Pogacar in fourth, together with the peloton (at 2’14” down). Time gap at km 52: 3’18”, at km 56: 3’28”; at km 60: 3’12”; at km 63: 3’43”. At the -100 km marker, the breakers are 3’30” ahead of the chasing bunch. Average speed after two hours of racing: 38.200 km/h. The peloton steps up the pace, and the gap starts to drop: 2’15” at km 78; 2’10” at km 80. At the mid-stage marker, the gap is going up again: 2’15”. At km 90, the breakers are 2’40” up the road; at the -75 km marker: 3’20”. At km 100, Stojnic and Tortomasi are still controlling the race, and their lead is up to 4’09”. At km 105, the peloton is 3’15” behind. At km 112, the gap is quickly down to 2’06”; with 4 km remaining to the second intermediate sprint: 1’55”; at the -50 km marker: 1’40”. Average speed after three hours of racing: 37.700 km/h Intermediate Sprint (Shawka – km 119.3) Stojnic comes in first, ahead of Tortomasi, and then sits up. Within sight of the arch, the Astana Squad steps up the pace, launching Lutsenko to snatch the third place at the sprint. Herrada comes in fourth, together with the peloton (at 1’15” down). At km 125, Tortomasi is still leading by 1’20”, but the peloton is quickly bridging the gap: with 25 km to go, they are just 20” behind. The peloton eventually bunches up at km 144. With 20 km remaining to the finish, Movistar and Astana are the most active squads in the peloton. Along the gradients leading to Hatta Dam, teams are taking relays at the front. With 10 km to go, Astana are setting the pace, while Froome seems to be in a bit of trouble. Campenaerts and Conci manage to clip off with a little over 9 km to go, building a slight lead (20” with 8K to go, 15” with 6K to go). The peloton comes back together at km 164, stretching out in a line. Bennett attacks along the final climbing bit, but is eventually outsprinted by Ewan. FINISH (Hatta Dam – km 168) Ewan claims the stage ahead of Bennett, Demare, Ulissi, Zabel, Vendrame, Mezgec, A. Yates, Pogacar and Gaudu. Battistella, Sobrero and Brunel jump away early on, at km 1, immediately picking up the pace and growing their advantage. At km 3, the gap stands at 25”; at km 7: 1’50”. At km 10, the breakaway are 2’40” up the road already, and their lead keeps going up, reaching 3’05” at km 20. The situation settles, and the gap hovers around two and a half minutes from km 25 through 35. The pace goes on a notch in the peloton, as the first intermediate sprint approaches. Intermediate Sprint (Golf Gardens - km 42.6) Sobrero leads Brunel and Battistella through the IS. Dekker takes fourth place, 1’45” later. The break hits the -100 km marker. Average speed after one hour of racing: 45.600 km/h. The peloton returns to an easy pace, and the gap goes back up to 1’50” at km 55, and to 2’05” at km 60.     Calendar Edition C 5 September 2021 International Sports Calendar no. 4 for 2021 | Against long odds, both the Games of the XXXII Olympiad and XVI Paralympic Games were successfully held in Tokyo, but the coronavirus continues to play havoc with the international sports calendar. Hopefully, 2022 will be a year of less tumult and more stability. Our new listing, updated from our 1 May 2021 edition, shows 743 events for the remainder of calendar year 2021 and through September 2022, for sports on the Olympic and Olympic Winter Games program. Two calendars are offered: first, in chronological order (pp. 2-17) and second, by sport (pp. 18-34). These listings are from publicly-available sources as of 1 September 2021 and will continue to change thanks to the virus.
