He is an American of Slovak descent who was formerly the editor of the Lutheran Forum. This article was published in the February 1995 issue pf the Lutheran Forum and is here reprinted with the permission of the author and the editor. Historical Background For about one hundred years, virtually the entire nation of Slovakia (at that time, `upper Hungary') subscribed to the Augsburg Confession. Only at the cost of one of the cruelest episodes of the Counter- Reformation was the nation converted anew to Roman Catholicism. -

ZfO JECES 67 ı 2018 ı 3 ı 375-396 375 Estonian by Recreation: Forging Ethnic Imagination through Communal Experience in Urban, Rural and Musical Spaces Maarja Merivoo-Parro* ZUSAMMENFASSUNG In der Freizeit zum Esten: Der Aufbau ethnischer Vorstellungskraft durch gemeinschaftliche Erfahrung im städtischen, ländlichen und musikalischen Umfeld Der Artikel befasst sich mit den gemeinschaftlichen Freizeitaktivitäten von Angehörigen des estnischen Exils im Amerika des Kalten Krieges und beruht auf dem Gedanken, dass diese Gemeinschaften bei dem Bemühen darum, dass ihnen die jungen Leute Zeit und Aufmerksamkeit widmen, nach Bereichen und Orten suchten, um gemeinsam ihr Estnisch- Sein auszuleben. Städtische Orte waren zum einen ständige Einrichtungen wie Estnische Häuser, zum anderen große Kulturveranstaltungen an wechselnden Orten wie z. B. die Est- nischen Westküsten-Tage (West Coast Estonian Days) oder das Festival ESTO mit Teil- nehmern aus aller Welt. Die ländlichen Gegenden blieben Pfadfindern und Pfadfinderin- nen vorbehalten. Obgleich sie auch größeren Zusammenschlüssen angehörten, war bei der Tätigkeit der amerikanisch-estnischen Pfadfinder eine spezielle estnische Ausrichtung spürbar. Da außerdem die Esten in den USA nicht in Enklaven, sondern über das Land ver- streut lebten, führten sie eine neuartige Form des Pfadfindertums ein, bei dem sich die ge- meinschaftliche Praxis zu einer individuellen veränderte. Während die wichtige Rolle der Chormusik im exil-estnischen Leben sowohl in kultureller als auch in politischer Hinsicht bereits nachgewiesen wurde, kann die bislang deutlich weniger erforschte Populärmusik in ähnlicher Weise dazu beitragen, die Freizeitgestaltung auf einer stärker persönlichen Ebe- ne nachzuvollziehen. Da die Esten in den USA geistigen und praktischen Zugriff auf die globale Popmusikszene hatten, liegt die Vermutung nahe, dass sie in mancherlei Hinsicht in der estnischen Musikgeschichte eine Vorreiterrolle eingenommen haben. -

Country Policy and Information Note Pakistan: Christians and Christian converts Version 4.0 February 2021 Preface Purpose This note provides country of origin information (COI) and analysis of COI for use by Home Office decision makers handling particular types of protection and human rights claims (as set out in the Introduction section). It is not intended to be an exhaustive survey of a particular subject or theme. It is split into two main sections: (1) analysis and assessment of COI and other evidence; and (2) COI. These are explained in more detail below. Assessment This section analyses the evidence relevant to this note – i.e. the COI section; refugee/human rights laws and policies; and applicable caselaw – by describing this and its inter-relationships, and provides an assessment of, in general, whether one or more of the following applies: x A person is reasonably likely to face a real risk of persecution or serious harm x The general humanitarian situation is so severe as to breach Article 15(b) of European Council Directive 2004/83/EC (the Qualification Directive) / Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights as transposed in paragraph 339C and 339CA(iii) of the Immigration Rules x The security situation presents a real risk to a civilian’s life or person such that it would breach Article 15(c) of the Qualification Directive as transposed in paragraph 339C and 339CA(iv) of the Immigration Rules x A person is able to obtain protection from the state (or quasi state bodies) x A person is reasonably able to relocate within a country or territory x A claim is likely to justify granting asylum, humanitarian protection or other form of leave, and x If a claim is refused, it is likely or unlikely to be certifiable as ‘clearly unfounded’ under section 94 of the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002. -
Statement in Solidarity with Our Children and Youth
STATEMENT IN SOLIDARITY WITH OUR CHILDREN AND YOUTH Our children and youth are like a young Jeremiah prophesying to the people: For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jer. 29:11) Recently, the students, faculty and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida experienced tragedy. Seventeen people - students and teachers - were killed by a 19-year- old shooter. In response, students have invited their teachers, families and allies around the nation to join with them for a March for Our Lives on March 24, 2018 in Washington, DC; calling our country into a deeper conversation about school safety and second amendment rights and responsibilities. We recognize this incident is the latest in a long list of tragic shootings in our country and young people have been calling for protest and change for many years. Some of those young voices have been ignored or silenced because of racial and economic injustice. We cannot let that reality keep us from acting now. Adopted in 1994, the ELCA social message on Community Violence remains sadly relevant today. The message speaks about the causes of violence as complex and pervasive, and of how violence breeds violence. In proclaiming the forgiveness and love of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the church addresses the root of violence while being committed to social actions that respond directly to violence and the people it affects. The Church OF PAKISTAN Introduction The Anglican Communion consists of 40 autonomous churches, also known as provinces around the world. It encompasses over 165 countries. This is a short introduction to The Church of Pakistan. More information about The Anglican Communion and each of the Member Churches can be found at anglicancommunion.org. Important Information Short History The Church of Pakistan is the result of the union of four denominations: Anglican, Methodist, Lutheran and Presbyterian (Scottish), which took place in 1970. The United Presbyterian Church which had been involved in the negotiations did not join. Initially there were four dioceses in the Church of Pakistan, i.e. Karachi, Multan, Lahore and Sialkot, but in 1980, through a special resolution and for better ministerial work, four new dioceses were created: Hyderabad, Raiwind, Faisalabad and Peshawar. There are eight active diocesan bishops with an additional bishop for the Gulf Ministries. This appointment was made to take care of the pastoral and worship needs of Urdu-speaking workers in the Gulf. There is a presiding bishop for the Church of Pakistan who is known as the moderator and has responsibility for a three-year term. According to the Church historian Eusebius writing in the 4th century AD, the apostles Thomas and Bartholomew were assigned to Parthia (modern Iran) and India. By the time of the establishment of the Second Persian Empire (AD 226), there were bishops of the Church of the East in northwest India, Afghanistan and Baluchistan (including parts of Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan), with laymen and clergy alike engaging in missionary activity. Roman Catholic missionary work took off on the Indian continent with the arrival of the Portuguese in the 16th century and became established in Lahore in 1570.1 In more modern times, Christianity became firmly established through Protestant missionary work in the late 18th and 19th centuries and has continued to grow ever since. However, due to the strongly increasing pressure in recent years, many Christians have fled abroad to countries like Sri Lanka or Thailand. Since the introduction of the blasphemy laws in 1986, Christians have come under increasing pressure and are victims of roughly a quarter of all blasphemy accusations. May 29, 2020 Special Edition of What Matters ELCA Bishops Respond to Recent Murders of Black Americans Dear Partners in Ministry, In these past days I have been part of conversations among bishops leading to this attached statement, signed by every one of the ELCA’s Conference of Bishops. While the week’s killing in Minneapolis is the most recent, it is a reminder of many others… and a reminder that we continue to be the inheritors of a 400-year legacy of conflicted race relations, and the conscious and unconscious racial attitudes and behaviors that are part of this culture. As God’s people, we are called to stand with all who are marginalized, and called to confess that we have not always done so. And, finally, we are called to work for the changes in individual, cultural, and institutional patterns of behavior that perpetuate racism and privilege that plague us. May God’s spirit be with us in that work.
