Kofi Awoonor's Poetry L
Kofi Awoonor's Poetry L. R. EARLY OFI Awoonor is a name that reappears with some frequency in discussions and anthologies of con• K temporary African literature. He has published two volumes of poetry, Rediscovery (1964) and Night of My Blood (1971) ; a novel, This Earth, My Brother (1971) ; and two plays in Short African Plays, edited by Cosmo Pieterse (1972).1 His essays and poems have appeared in a number of magazines, and he has been interviewed in a series on African writers. Night of My Blood and the paperback edition of This Earth, My Brother have introductions by two of Africa's outstanding contemporary writers, Ezekiel Mphahlele and Chinua Achebe. While Awoonor's publish• ed work is relatively slight in volume, it is a substantial achievement in recent African writing in English, and promising in its development and versatility. The facts of Awoonor's life may in part explain this accomplishment and promise. He was born in 1935 near Keta in Ghana, and attended Achimota School and the University of Ghana, where he later worked in the In• stitute of African Studies, specializing in vernacular poetry. He edited Okyeame, a literary magazine which appeared irregularly in the early sixties, and served as an associate editor of Transition. More recently he has co-edited with G. Adali-Mortty an anthology, Messages/Poems from Ghana (1971). In the mid-sixties Awoonor was Director of the Ghana Film Corporation. He took an M.A. at the University of London in 1968 and subsequently became Visiting Professor in African Literature at the State Uni• versity of New York, Stony Brook, and Chairman of its Comparative Literature Program. -

Abstract "Sticks and stones will break my bones but words can never hurt me." Nearly every American child is taught this phrase. The Anlo Ewe of Ghana, however, have more reverence for the damaging potential of language. Their songs of abuse, or halo, are at once an artistic medium, a social control, a source of humor and entertainment. At the same time they are a form of verbal warfare, with victims and casualties the same as in any other type of war. -

Kente, 2019 KENTE, 2019, VOL 1, NO. 1, 74-89 An Ecocritical Reading of Selected African Poems Moussa Traoré ABSTRACT Department of English University of Cape Coast, Ghana This paper discusses some ecocritical ideas in selected poems by [email protected] / [email protected] Kofi Awoonor, Kofi Anyidoho and the Negritude poets David Diop and Birago Diop. Drawing on postcolonial ecocriticism theory the paper focuses on ecocritical symbolisms and their ramifications in order to show how African poets attend to the environment, community and modernity’s many flaws. The consideration of the Negritude poems in this study stems from the fact that Negritude Literature in general and the selected poems in particular have been examined mainly within the context of Black African identity and the antiracist effort in general. The paper demonstrates that ecological motifs or symbols are deployed by some African poets to express life, survival, and nostalgia. 86 The Afterlife of a Suicide AND THE ROYAL SENDOFF FOR A QUEENMOTHER OF THE ASHANTI ALEXANDRA MARSHALL When Nana Afua Frema Tatuo II, the queenmother of Wenchi in the Ashanti king- dom, phoned from Ghana to relay the news of the death of her brother the chief, Nana Kusi Apea I, I sent a memorial gift for the library room in a building she wanted to con- struct in his honor. Just a year later, in 2016, when I received the news of Nana Frema’s own death, I responded, impulsively, that I would like to attend her funeral as long as the family would welcome my presence. The queenmother’s younger daughter, Nana Doris, didn’t hesitate either in extending an invitation. Because of the extensive preparations necessary for a royal funeral, it is months later when my husband, Jim, and I are on our way. After too many hours in the white air between New York and Accra, the confetti of corrugated rooftops creates a multicolored mix of red and green and blue, matching the clay earth and the tropical vegetation and the ocean we’ve crossed. Since my last visit, the airport has been upgraded to generic, but I know where I am by the embracing way the arriving passengers are welcomed. One of Nana Frema’s 11 granddaughters introduces herself and guides Jim and me to the adja- cent terminal to get tickets for the connecting flight to Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti kingdom. The extended family is assembling from far and wide for this royal occasion. -

The article examines contradictions surrounding the use of colonial- heritage language and culture as the basis of creativity and general education in Africa. It demonstrates the challenges of creative work in colonial-heritage languages and the ben- efits of original work in African languages that draws on models from the oral tradition; however, given that African cultural practice is primarily oral, the paper acknowledges the need for using modern technology for transmitting Afri- can literature, especially poetry, through recordings of the spoken voice.
