  • Cosmopolitanism, Remediation and the Ghost World of Bollywood
COSMOPOLITANISM, REMEDIATION, AND THE GHOST WORLD OF BOLLYWOOD DAVID NOVAK CUniversity ofA California, Santa Barbara Over the past two decades, there has been unprecedented interest in Asian popular media in the United States. Regionally identified productions such as Japanese anime, Hong Kong action movies, and Bollywood film have developed substantial nondiasporic fan bases in North America and Europe. This transnational consumption has passed largely under the radar of culturalist interpretations, to be described as an ephemeral by-product of media circulation and its eclectic overproduction of images and signifiers. But culture is produced anew in these “foreign takes” on popular media, in which acts of cultural borrowing channel emergent forms of cosmopolitan subjectivity. Bollywood’s global circulations have been especially complex and surprising in reaching beyond South Asian diasporas to connect with audiences throughout the world. But unlike markets in Africa, Eastern Europe, and Southeast Asia, the growing North American reception of Bollywood is not necessarily based on the films themselves but on excerpts from classic Bollywood films, especially song-and- dance sequences. The music is redistributed on Western-produced compilations andsampledonDJremixCDssuchasBollywood Beats, Bollywood Breaks, and Bollywood Funk; costumes and choreography are parodied on mainstream television programs; “Bollywood dancing” is all over YouTube and classes are offered both in India and the United States.1 In this essay, I trace the circulation of Jaan Pehechaan Ho, a song-and-dance sequence from the 1965 Raja Nawathe film Gumnaam that has been widely recircu- lated in an “alternative” nondiasporic reception in the United States. I begin with CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY, Vol. 25, Issue 1, pp.

  • Rocking the Sixties on the North Shore
© Wilmette Historical Museum FEATURE ARTICLE Rocking the Sixties on the North Shore In 1964, the year that the Beatles appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show greeted by throngs of screaming girls, boys all over America found themselves dreaming of being in a rock-and-roll band. It wasn’t all that difficult to do. Here on the North Shore, bands sprouted up all over the place, mostly among kids who knew each other from school. Dave Cleland remembers Larry Meyerson, the drummer from a new band called Don Campbell of the Vandells, 1965 The Marauders, stopping him in the hallway at New Trier High School to persuade him to join the band as lead singer. Cleland wasn’t sure he Chosen Few was good enough, a bit of modesty that Larry set list, 1965 quickly brushed aside: “All you gotta do is sing ‘Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!’ How hard is that?” The Chosen Few at the Rolling Stone, 1965 Chet Nichols, Tom Peck, Jeff Weinstein Great Balls of Fire Jenny, Jenny Whole Lotta Shakin Shaking All Over Walking the Dog Jolly Green Giant Around and Around Memphis Johnny B. IT WILL STAND: The music of our youth © Frank Eberling 12.0 011414 1 IT WILL STAND “It swept this whole wide land, Sinkin' deep in the heart of man. Yes, Rock & Roll forever will stand.” IT WILL STAND by The Showmen (1961, 1964) If you were to walk the almost-empty hallways of Clarkstown High School tomorrow morning and listen very carefully, ignoring the slamming of a locker door over on the next corridor, or the sound of Mr. Buerkett's mop pushing a pile of sweeping compound down the glistening floors, or a girl's laughter after she drops her books while bending over a drinking fountain, you might hear something familiar. If you are lucky enough to hear it, you'll never forget it. My family was filled with musicians. My parents, older sister, Bonnie, and younger brother, Ray, could all play at least two instruments, with an old upright piano being the common core. I grew up listening to live piano music played by four family members, all day long. I took piano lessons myself for a few months but they didn't take me. But I loved the music. So it probably comes as no surprise that the first Rock & Roll record I ever bought was by a piano player. It was I'M WALKIN', by Fats Domino. I still have the 78rpm record I bought in February of 1957. (78rpm PHOTO HERE if I can find it by Friday). Some people believe the old conventional wisdom that Rock & Roll was invented in 1956 and the term was coined by Alan Freed.

  • The Wanderer”
Dion – From “A Teenager in Love” to “The Wanderer” Dion (left) and the Belmonts Although he originally emerged as a swaggering, Doo Wop-singing teen idol in the late 1950s, streetwise New Yorker Dion DiMucci (better known simply as Dion) quickly showed himself to be a sublimely soulful vocalist as well as an artist of depth and versatility. His musical sensibility was shaped by the Blues, R&B and Country records he heard while growing up in the Bronx in the pre- Rock and Roll 1950s. After an unsuccessful 1957 solo single, he recruited harmonizing neighborhood pals Carlo Mastrangelo, Fred Milano, and Angelo D'Aleo to form the Belmonts. With Dion singing lead, the foursome scored a series of hits — "I Wonder Why," "No One Knows," "A Teenager in Love," "Where or When" — whose adolescent orientation couldn't disguise DiMucci's fluid, deeply expressive singing. Dion went solo in 1960, and scored even greater success with such smashes as "Runaround Sue," "Lovers Who Wander" and the anthemic "The Wanderer" – adopting a more macho persona as credible as the youthful longing expressed in “A Teenager in Love.” After signing with Columbia Records in 1962, he began to emerge as a distinctive songwriter, while experimenting with a grittier Blues-Folk-Rock style that showed him to be in tune with the changing musical times. Little of that material was released at the time, and that which was released didn't sell well. A 1966 reunion album with the Belmonts was better received, and in 1968 Dion experienced a life-changing religious conversion and conquered a longstanding heroin addiction.

  • Silver Eagle Discography
Silver Eagle USA Discography by Mike Callahan, David Edwards & Patrice Eyries © 2018 by Mike Callahan Silver Eagle Discography Silver Eagle was a Canadian company headquartered near Toronto at 115 Apple Creek Blvd., Markham, Ontario, Canada. The label was a subsidiary of LaBuick & Associates Media, Inc., and label President was Ed LaBuick. The Media company specialized in TV marketing, and in addition to Silver Eagle also promoted Time-Life. In addition to LPs, Cassettes, and CDs, Silver Eagle also released videos. They established an office in the US at 4 Centre Drive, Orchard Park, NY (later, 777 N. Palm Canyon Dr., Palm Springs, CA), and often licensed product from the Special Products Divisions of the major record labels. They typically would pre-sell an album using 2-minute TV spots in stations across the country, then use that demand to place product in retail stores. They had their own manufacturing plant and distribution system, and according to LaBuick, sold many millions of albums. LaBuick later became head of the Music Division and Special Products Division of the major Quality Label in Canada. Note: All distributed by Silver Eagle unless noted otherwise.
