Cosmopolitanism, Remediation and the Ghost World of Bollywood
COSMOPOLITANISM, REMEDIATION, AND THE GHOST WORLD OF BOLLYWOOD DAVID NOVAK CUniversity ofA California, Santa Barbara Over the past two decades, there has been unprecedented interest in Asian popular media in the United States. Regionally identified productions such as Japanese anime, Hong Kong action movies, and Bollywood film have developed substantial nondiasporic fan bases in North America and Europe. This transnational consumption has passed largely under the radar of culturalist interpretations, to be described as an ephemeral by-product of media circulation and its eclectic overproduction of images and signifiers. But culture is produced anew in these “foreign takes” on popular media, in which acts of cultural borrowing channel emergent forms of cosmopolitan subjectivity. Bollywood’s global circulations have been especially complex and surprising in reaching beyond South Asian diasporas to connect with audiences throughout the world. But unlike markets in Africa, Eastern Europe, and Southeast Asia, the growing North American reception of Bollywood is not necessarily based on the films themselves but on excerpts from classic Bollywood films, especially song-and- dance sequences. The music is redistributed on Western-produced compilations andsampledonDJremixCDssuchasBollywood Beats, Bollywood Breaks, and Bollywood Funk; costumes and choreography are parodied on mainstream television programs; “Bollywood dancing” is all over YouTube and classes are offered both in India and the United States.1 In this essay, I trace the circulation of Jaan Pehechaan Ho, a song-and-dance sequence from the 1965 Raja Nawathe film Gumnaam that has been widely recircu- lated in an “alternative” nondiasporic reception in the United States. Rembering Bobby Freeman and C'mon and Swim

NEWS BLACK SWIMMING HISTORY MONTH REMEMBERING BOBBY FREEMAN FORT LAUDERDALE - On January 23, Singer/songwriter Bobby Freeman, whose song “C’mon And Swim” climbed the pop charts in the summer of 1964, passed away at his home in Daly City, Calif. According to his son, Robert, Jr., the cause of death was a heart attack. He was 76 and his death was not been widely reported. Better known for his 1958 hit, “Do You Want to Dance,” “C’mon An Swim” has long gone unnoticed or unappreciated for the unintended political and cultural implications it had for our nation, at the height of the historic debate concerning the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. By 1964, it had been almost 100 years that African Americans had been barred from most of our nations beaches and pools because, according to historian and author Jeff Wiltze (Contested Waters: A social history of swimming pools in America), the thought of black men interacting with white women (and vice versa), in skimpy bathing attire, stirred up the murky waters of sexuality and popular prejudices. There is a marker on the beach, a short walk from the Hall of Fame, commemorating the peaceful wade-ins that led to the integration of the beaches of Fort Lauderdale in 1964. Demonstrations in other cities were not so peaceful. In St. Augustine, Florida, race riots broke out when angry whites attacked peaceful demonstrators attempting to integrate the beach.
