The project focuses on the effects in Scotland of the development of the new media of film and wireless. It addresses question as to what changes, over the first decades of the twentieth century, these two revolutionary forms of public technology effect on the established entertainment system in Scotland and on the Scottish experience of culture. The study presents a broad view of the cultural scene in Scotland over the period: discusses contemporary politics; considers established and new theatrical activity; examines the development of a film culture; and investigates the expansion of broadcast wireless and its influence on indigenous theatre. -

Ian Campbell A Tribute that Never Was: The Plan for A Lewis Grassic Gibbon Festschrift Hugh MacDiarmid received two telegrams on 8 February 1935, both with the same very bad news: Leslie Mitchell had died in London of peritonitis. One telegram came from Mrs. Mitchell in Welwyn Garden City, the other from their staunch mutual friend Helen Cruickshank in Edinburgh. In James Leslie Mitchell, better known under his pseudonym of Lewis Grassic Gibbon, Scotland had lost one of its foremost men of letters, as author of Sunset Song one of its most popular writers of the century. The joint propulsion given to the renaissance of Scottish writing by the pseudonymous friendship of MacDiarmid and Gibbon would now have to come more singly from MacDiarmid, himself in 1935 at a low point in his own personal fortunes. -

Modern Scottish Fiction: Telling Stories in Order to Live David Goldie Scottish fiction has been lauded in recent years for its formal and linguistic inventiveness, its diversity, and the sense it gives of an increasingly self- confident culture edging closer to a distinctive expression of national self- determination. This, though, is a relatively recent phenomenon: the result of only thirty years or so of experiment and development. For much of the second-half of the twentieth-century, in the years before the political and social changes brought about by the Thatcher governments’ assault on the post-war settlement and the consequent destabilisation of the United Kingdom’s constitutional arrangements, Scottish fiction, like Scottish culture more generally, was arguably much less ambitious, less focused, and less self-assured. Like a set of disconnected stories in search of a theme, Scottish fiction might be said, in the years following 1945, to have suffered a deep and disorientating crisis of confidence. The Scottish Literary Renaissance movement that had gained prominence in the decade before the Second World War had brought with it an expansive sense of the possibilities open to a self-assured, assertive national literature. Although it had sometimes fallen far short of the political and aesthetic aspirations of its remarkable animateur, the poet Hugh MacDiarmid, the Renaissance had created the conditions for a literature confident in the lyrical and expressive power of Scots dialect and aware of its potential to grasp and bend the -

Maurice Lindsay A Century of Scottish Creative Writing Three Essays Scottish Fiction 1900-2000 Scottish fiction was dominated throughout most of the nineteenth century by the gigantic genius of Sir Walter Scott, who revived and spread an interest in Scotland's past, just as Robert Bums had revived an interest and awareness of the Scots tongue a generation or so before. By the beginning of the twenti eth century, however, the novel of social concern had been cultivated for some years by Scottish writers. But there was a carry-over of the Scott tradition early in the century by two novelists, Neil Munro (1884-1930) and John Buchan, Baron Tweedsmuir (1875-1940). Inverary-born Munro published his best-loved novels in the first decade of the twentieth century. Doom Castle came out in 1901, followed by the various collections of short stories that won him popular fame, The Vital Spark (1906), The Daft Days (1907), and Ayrshire Idylls (1912). -

Manfred Malzahn Masters and Slaves in Scottish Fiction and Ideology of the 1930s: James Leslie Mitchell's Spartacus and William Bell's Rip van Scotland The foundation of the National Party of Scotland in 1928 added new fuel to a debate about the desirability of a link between Scottish nationalism and socialist egalitarianism, a connection which was by then a well-established reality. The Scottish Home Rule Association, previously coexisting with the Scots National league and the Scottish National Movement, could still be called "non-political,") if only in the sense that it sought to unite people from different ends of the political spectrum. However, as Keith Webb asserts, "its major strength emanated from socialist circles.',2 As for the new organization, Gordon Donaldson claims that it combined a clear-cut "left-wing bias,,3 with an uncompromising pro-independence stance. -

Its thesis is that patriarchal images of manhood and mythical representations of the Scottish hard man have been instrumental in creating a perception of failed masculinity and the resulting identity crisis of male protagonists. The development of Scottish male characters throughout the century is studied in eight primary novels written between 1901 and 1993. Various secondary novels, texts and articles pertaining to the study of Scottish literature and/or gender studies are also used to emphasise the points being made. The essay begins with a chapter on the overview of the history of Scotland, Scottish fiction, and the major thematic breakthroughs of men’s studies in the twentieth-century. The focus is then turned towards the eight novels: George Douglas Brown’s The House of the Green Shutters, John MacDougall Hay’s Gillespie, Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s Grey Granite, James Kelman’s The Busconductor Hines, Jeff Torrington’s Swing Hammer Swing!, Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting, Ron Butlin’s The Sound of My Voice and William McIlvanney’s Docherty. Finally, the possible future of the hard man in Scottish fiction is briefly discussed.
