    On Local Festival Performance: The Sherpa Dumji in a world of dramatically increasing uncertainties1 Eberhard Berg It is important to remember, however, that Tibetan Buddhism, especially the form followed by the Rnying ma pa, is intended first and foremost to be pragmatic (...). The explanation for the multiplicity of metaphors and tutelary deities lies in the fact that there must be a practice suited to every sentient creature somewhere. Forms or metaphors that were relevant yesterday may lose their efficacy in the changed situation of today. E.G. Smith (2001:240) The Sherpas are a small, ethnically Tibetan people who live at high altitudes in the environs of Mt. Everest in Solu-Khumbu, a relatively remote area in the north eastern part of the “Hindu Kingdom of Nepal”. Traditionally, their economy has combined agriculture with herding and local as well as long- distance trade. Since the middle of the 20th century they have been successfully engaged in the trekking and mountaineering boom. Organised in patrilineal clans, they live in nuclear family households in small villages, hamlets, and isolated homesteads. Property in the form of herds, houses and land is owned by nuclear families. Among the Sherpas, Dumji, the famous masked dance festival, is held annually in the village temple of only eight local communities in Solu- Khumbu. According to lamas and laypeople alike Dumji represents the most important village celebration in the Sherpas’ annual cycle of ceremonies. BACKGROUND 2.1 THE COUNTRY The Kingdom of Nepal is situated between the region of Tibet annexed by China in the North and India in the South. It stretches from east to west along the southern slopes of the Himalayas with a length of just under 900 km and a width of up to 250 km. With its area of 147 181 square kilometres – corresponding to the surface of Austria and Switzerland together – it has a population of just under 25 million people (census of July 2001).1 About 82 percent of Nepal’s population make their living out of farming. The per capita income per year is around 220 US dollars. With this, Nepal ranks among the poorest and least developed countries in the world with almost half of its population living below the poverty line.

  • Tengboche Monastery
    Tengboche Monastery Tengboche is one of the most popular villages in the Himalayas of Eastern Nepal, situated in Khumbu valley. Located at an altitude of 3,867 m, the star attraction of the village is Tengboche Monastery, the largest gompa in the Khumbu region. The monastery is for Buddhists and was first built in 1923. The old monastery was demolished by the fire of 1989, and again later was built under the help of volunteers and the provision of foreign aid. The best part of the monastery is the panoramic view of the Himalayas that are well known as Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Tawache, Thamserku, Tenzing Norgay, etc. Another fascinating thing about the village is that the first climber of Mount Everest – Sir Edmund Hillary was born in Thani village and raised to be a Monk in Tengboche Monastery. Khumbu Valley has been dominated by Buddhism for 350 years now. Tengboche Monastery, also known as Dawa Choling Gompa, blesses pilgrims and travelers in the area. Constructed by Lama Gulu, the monastery is the first celibate monastery under the Nyingmapa lineage of Vajrayana Buddhism. Hope to more than sixty monks. The monastery is visited for blessings from the lama and witness special chanting. Having a unique backdrop of Mount Ama Dablam, the monastery is famous for the colorful Mani Rimdu festival, a culmination of Buddhist celebrations that takes place every year in October. The festival is full of religious gatherings, songs, ritual dances, and enactments of the lives of legendary figures. Many trekkers make their journey to Khumbu by coinciding with the festival to attend it.

    How to Fund a Ritual: Notes on the Social Usage of the Kanjur (bKa’ ’gyur) in a Tibetan Village1 Geoff Childs The Kanjur (bKa’ ’gyur, translated words of Buddha) is a collection of texts that forms the core of Tibetan canonical literature. Most major Buddhist institutions in Tibet have (or had) a collection of these works, each volume carefully wrapped in cloth and stored within specially constructed alcoves housed within a temple. In recent decades, studies of individual texts within the Kanjur as well as investigations into the history of the collection as a whole have been carried out by philologists and religious specialists (e.g., Nattier 1991; Eimer 1992; Silk 1994; Harrison 1996). The research has led to a better understanding of the contents of the collection, as well as details on the historical relationships between different versions of the Kanjur. Despite the admirable scholarship that has gone into the study of the Kanjur, very little is known about how it is regarded by commoners or used in the ritual life of villages. In this paper I describe a ritual in which the symbolic capacity of the Kanjur— a capacity that derives from the fact that the texts are a physical manifestation of the Buddha’s teachings—is deployed to help secure the health and livelihood of lay people. In addition I detail village-level funding mechanisms that ensure that the ritual can be performed on an annual basis. The purpose is to shed light on pragmatic dimensions of religious life in a Tibetan society by demonstrating the close relationship between texts, rituals, economics, and social organization.

Photo © Stan Stevens Stan Stevens December 2008 Executive Summary Sherpa community and conservation leaders gathered on May 25, 2008 in Khumjung, the largest of the many Sherpa villages in the traditional Sherpa territory of Khumbu in the Mt. Everest region which are enclaves of Sherpa land within Sagarmatha (Chomolungma/Mt. Everest) National Park (SNP). Most had walked for hours from other regional villages. They had gathered at the request of prominent elected local conservation leaders for an informal discussion about maintaining and strengthening their conservation of their sacred lands and community livelihood commons in a place which for them is a homeland, sacred valley, and Buddhist sanctuary (beyul) which as Sherpas they have responsibility to care for. They had come from nearly all of the many villages which were legally protected as private, Sherpa lands in the 1970s when the rest of Khumbu Sherpa lands were nationalized and incorporated into Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) National Park (SNP) and World Heritage Site and the national forest to the south of it. These Sherpa villages, which have never been part of SNP or the SNP World Heritage Site, were declared part of the SNP Buffer Zone in 2002 together with the Sherpa commons of lower Khumbu which earlier had been made part of Nepal’s national forest.
