This lecture and hands on combination course is intended for dental hygienists who want to begin placing direct composite restorations or for dental hygienists who are currently placing composites and want to improve their skills.

Direct composite restorations are one of the most common procedures in most general dental practices. Due to pressure from insurance reimbursement, dental hygienists are increasingly being asked to perform these procedures. Despite the frequency of the procedure, direct composite restorations can be very challenging and the outcomes are often less than dental professionals expect or patients desire. In the past few years manufacturers have introduced new types of adhesive and composites making material selection even more complicated. We will review the different types of adhesive and composites available and the pros and cons of each type and discuss the newest classes of these products in detail. While the material choices are important, the tooth preparation and the way in which these materials are applied to the tooth has a more important impact on both the initial and long term success of the restoration than choice of material. This course is based upon the most recent advances in techniques stemming from sound engineering principles which promise to dramatically improve short and long term success.

F10 WISHA - Connecting the Dots

This presentation connects the dots between WISHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, DQAC’s proposed changes to the infection control rules and CDC’s infection control recommendations. You’ll learn what the Infection Control guidelines are, why you are expected to follow them, how, where and when to implement them. We will address the issues, methods and means of responding to WISHA’s continuing compliance requirements and how to protect against and avoid dentistry’s most common citations and penalties.

Objectives: • Understand WISHA’s dental setting rules and regulations • Learn the most common violations and how to respond to an WISHA investigation • Be able to prepare and update the required written WISHA programs • Understand the patient’s infection control perspective and expectations • Learn WISHA and DOH infection control expectations • Review accepted disinfection, barrier protection, and sterilization procedures • Communicate infection control responsibilities to all staff members F11 The Cannabis Connection

Cannabis use should be a question on every dental office medical history form. If it isn’t a specific line item, it should be included with the patient’s prescription and over the counter medications and supplements. Learn why this is of significance to the dental professional.

History of cannabis use for medicinal purposes dates back to China in early 2700 BC. It was prevalent in Western medicine until the first part of the 20th century when use declined due to inconsistency in available plant material. Recreational use surged in the 60’s and medicinal benefits resurfaced with research into the chemical structure. Identification of an endogenous cannabinoid system, cannabis receptors in the brain, in the early 1990’s led to an increased prevalence in prescribing cannabis for a myriad of medical conditions. The movement continues with states continuing to legalize medical and recreational use. With an increase in usage, dental professionals should be aware of potential implications on oral and systemic health.

Following this course participants will be able to: • Relate the history of cannabis for medicinal purposes • Recognize the states and differences in laws regarding legalization of marijuana for medical and recreational use • Briefly explain the pharmacology of cannabis and identify health conditions that are impacted or affected by chronic use of cannabis • List common medical conditions treated with cannabis • Understand the effects of cannabis use on oral health F12 Joy & Karma of a Long DH Career

This course will focus on the interrelationship between cumulative trauma disorders and instrumentation techniques. A variety of hands-on activities utilizing a wide array of dental instruments on typodonts will give participants the opportunity to discover the joy of implementing new approaches to help reach peak performance with minimal stress and strain.

Emphasis will focus on adapting your technique for optimal health. This workshop will provide practical principles for enhancing dexterity, preserving strength and increasing confidence when confronting ergonomic challenges. Exercises and best practices will be introduced to help extend the life of your career. Discover the joy and karma of implementing new advances. S13 HIPPA - Protecting Your Patients and the Dental Practice

Under HIPAA, team members are individually responsible to protect patients’ personal, private information, but it is the employer’s responsibility to ensure that staff members understand their HIPAA responsibilities and are properly trained. If staff doesn’t receive the required training (at the time of hire and regularly thereafter), the dentist is ultimately accountable.

Objectives: • Better understand the provisions of the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules • Objectively examine the compliance level of their individual HIPAA programs • Identify their program deficiencies and implement current compliance procedures • Implement, update, and maintain a compliant HIPAA program • Communicate compliance responsibilities to all staff members S14 Nourished for Life: A Science-Based Approach to Nutrition and Self-Care

There are 4 parts to this course starting with the Mediterranean Diet. What is this diet? It is a delicious path to health. This course will discuss the components of the Diet, the research behind the diet and just how you can put the diet into practice. This course will then cover the inflammation – chronic disease connection. I will explain what inflammation is, the health risks of chronic inflammation and just how to cool it. I will bring to light the tale of two diets and explain the anti-inflammatory powerhouses. No nutrition course is complete without the discussion of your gut. We must take care of and feed our gut microbiota. This course will explain just what that is and how it is so important. We will close this course with tying it all together with finding your balance. We will explore self-care, self-compassion and just what health is and finally bust some nutrition myths. S15 Make Every Minute Matter - Hands on Sharpening Workshop

The only thing dull in this course will be the instruments we provide to practice your sharpening skills. It’s time to make the successful transition into consistent precise instrument sharpening leading to healthier patient outcomes. This lively hands-on course will explore the reasons you may avoid sharpening and inspire you to implement a simple “clock technique” that will improve your accuracy and instrumentation performance right away.

S18 Mouth-Body Connection: The Interplay of Oral Systemic Health

This course will discuss the relationship between oral health and systemic diseases. We will cover special populations affected by oral health issues, dietary factors that influence periodontal disease and the oral signs of nutritional deficiencies. We will discuss the key role that hygienists play as the first line of defense in spotting signs and symptoms that are reflected in the mouth as well as recognizing signs of eating disorders.

S19 Microbes and Your Mouth

Microbiology, oral health and infection control in the modern era. Almost nothing we believed in the mid-20th Century about infectious diseases and their demise has turned out to be true. Actually, a lot of what we’ve learned about healthy living centers on what goes on in your mouth and your microbes. This review will get you up to date on some extraordinary developments in the field of: a) microbiology in general; b) oral health in particular; and c) emerging preventive strategies that you can take advantage of in the practice of oral hygiene. S20 Pilates 101 for the Dental Hygienist

Hygienists know the potential physical risks of our occupation and though we are taught proper ergonomics in school, we don’t practice them. Even when we do, problems can develop from the repetitive motion, static positioning world that we live in. A primary source of these problems are associated with the spine including the cervical, thoracic and lumbar areas. In order to prevent long term effects of practicing in this kind of environment we must create an inverse reaction. PILATES is perfectly designed to do just this.

In this class you will learn about the LESSER known but MORE important core muscles through basic PILATES moves that can be done anywhere and anytime with no equipment necessary. You will learn productive breathing and core activation, all of which will help you build strength, flexibility and prevent pain and injury AND allow you to live a long and happy life as a Dental Hygienist. Plus, it’s actually FUN! If you have ever been intimidated by PILATES before, this class with make you feel comfortable and confident and dispel the myth! S21 Systemic Effects of Periodontal Infection and Emerging Options for Non-Surgical Management Protocols

Demographic trends in the US population are exposing more serious consequences of periodontal disease than had been realized previously. Gingival and periodontal health indicators always tend to decline with age, concomitantly with the prevalence of other chronic disorders of cardiovascular, pulmonary and musculoskeletal systems. But those conditions are now overlaid with the impacts of a surge in degenerative brain and diabetes pathologies, both of which are associated with even higher rates of oral health deterioration. The trends are heightening not only the need for more readily available and effective means of intervening to improve oral health, but also exposing how important oral disease can be as a contributor to infection-associated diseases throughout the body. Evidence of the causative links will be reviewed, and some of the likely mechanisms involved, particularly from a microbiology perspective, will be discussed. These provide the foundation for considering novel approaches to improving oral health in simple, readily-adopted ways that are capable of reversing these trends at individual and eventually population levels, with beneficial effects on health costs to the nation.

Oxidative metabolites resulting from phagocytic cell activation are an important part of defense against microbial pathogens, and in stimulating restorative, healing processes in soft tissues. Now that formulations of these compounds can be prepared at scale through innovative manufacturing methods, the opportunity is at hand to apply these as routine measures and critically evaluate their effects. The potential for oral health improvements by this means was demonstrated several years ago by pioneering work done at USC by periodontology researchers there. However they studied crudely defined preparations of active chlorine that were not going to be readily taken up by oral health professionals, despite the apparent advantages over conventional regimens of Chlorhexidine use that accrued from their regular adoption. Even more recently, formulations of the active principle, hypochlorous acid (HOCl), have shown promise in the hands of several academic research groups, and we have capitalized on this momentum in ongoing studies with exceptionally pure, potent, stable and well-characterized solutions of the compound in patients in the Pacific NW. Beneficial impacts of routines of oral rinsing with pure HOCl on a range of readily measured parameters, such as plaque deposition, gingival bleeding and periodontal pocket scores are readily demonstrated. The extent of these outcomes will be illustrated in patients followed serially over periods of several months. The upside potential for this kind of simple intervention to affect oral health and hygiene in significant and cost- effective ways will be reviewed, as well as some of the additional clinically evident advantages experienced by regular users.

Alexia Zbaraschuk

Alexia Zbaraschuk brings a combination of rich Asana teachings in combination with a background in meditation and Pranayama (breathe work) for a unique lineage based approach to modern yoga. She gives a creative Vinyasa flow with Ashtanga rooted alignments. It is her vision to share yoga asana's spiritual richness in a way that both elevates and inspires her students to find a home within themselves. Sharing her knowledge of Pantanjali's yoga sutra through her training by one of the first American female lineage Lamas, Kimberly Lafferty, paired with a Vedic philosophy as a principle of practice, she brings a warmth and weight to her teaching style. She is constantly amazed by the connectivity of the mind and body. "Where my mind goes my feet will follow. Yoga has not only brought my body but my mind a sense of peace and wellness. Maintaining a yogic way of life is crucial in keeping my body and mind in union." Through her constant striving for continued yogic education, she is certain that through properly done alignments and modifications yogis of all levels can disconnect with the external and re-establish a better connection with Self.

Student Poster Session

In this competition, student clinicians present either original research material from the ADHA National Dental Hygiene Research Agenda or informative material on a specific topic of interest based on current treatment, technique, theory or trend through poster and oral presentations. This gives students an opportunity to raise awareness about a technique, theory, service, trend or expanded opportunity in the practice of dental hygiene and/or the broader realm of oral and systemic health research. The student posters are judged Saturday morning with awards presented at the Awards Luncheon later that day.

Attend at least 4 poster presentations on Saturday, April 13th and receive 1 free CEU!
