Index 1953-2012 CUMULATIVE INDEX 1953-2012 This index to The Canal Zone Philatelist, undertaken by the CZSG Metro (formerly North Jersey) Chapter, is the thirteenth updating as developed by Gary B. Weiss, and follows the format used by Charles J. Peterson, Editor, Philatelic Literature Review, as published in the PLR, Vol. 25, No. 2, 1976, pp. 71-80. The index is divided into four sections: Section A - Internal; Section B - Subjects by Scott / CZSG number; Section C - General Subjects; and a new Section D ± Author Index. The new Author Index generally lists authors alphabetically, with articles chronologically, and includes those with bylines or subtext attributions, but not those reporting regularly on CZ business, e.g., 2IILFHUV¶PHVVDJHV Scott catalog numbers are used as the basic guide; the more detailed CZSG system (numbering, lettering and decimal points) expands the Scott listings and are taken from the listings in Canal Zone Stamps by Plass, Brewster and Salz rather than the old "Detailed List" published in the CZP. This accounts for discrepancies between numbers in the index and in the articles indexed. United Postal Stationery Society (UPSS) catalog numbers are used where appropriate. Entries are by journal whole number, colon (:), and page number(s). For example, "35:9,15" refers to an article published in whole number 35 (Vol. 11, No. 2) of the CZP on pages 9 and 15. With the advent of the Word Processor the opportunity has been taken to convert these original hard copy indexes into electronic format, to amalgamate them into one document, and to bring the index up to date. From this point forward future indexing will be relatively straightforward and the index will be updated within a short period after each bulletin is published. To those members with a PC it will be available on-line, alternatively up-to-date hard copy prints will be available on request from the Publications Officer. The index now provides easy access to an enormous corpus of high quality information covering virtually every topic within British West Indies philately. As the number of subjects covered has expanded over the years it has been deemed necessary to sub-divide the topics under each colony heading into four separate categories, each entry being listed in alphabetical order.

    The Varney Airgram An Introduction (Part 1) Stamp Club Program November 2020 Joe Voice A Varney Airgram (front) This program is being presented in two installments. The first provides the background needed to understand the origin of the Varney Airgram. The second will cover details associated with the Airgram itself. Vickie recommended I show you a Varney Airgram on the first two pages of the first installment so you could see what this is all about. You don’t see a Varney Airgram again until the second installment. A Varney Airgram (back) I’m dedicating this program to Howard Ness (Spokane Club) who introduced me to the Varney Airgram. His clothesline presentation of his Airgram collection given at the Moses Lake Philatelic Symposium quite a few years ago sparked my interest in them. My interest resulted from their connection to CAM-5 which I was collecting and researching. I started to accumulate them. That accumulation has grown enough to result in this study of them. My next project will be to design and build a multi-frame philatelic exhibit that presents what I have learned about the Varney Airgram. US Post Office Air Mail Service Inaugurated an experimental airmail route on May 15, 1918: • Mail was flown between New York, NY and Washington, DC with a stopover in Philadelphia, PA. • The Army cooperated in the venture by providing both the flying equipment and pilots. • On August 12 the Post Office took over the entire operation of the route furnishing its own aircraft and pilots. The short 218 mile distance covered did not permit any substantial time- savings advantage over railroad mail service.

American Air Mail Catalog Subtitled: “Reference Listing of the Airposts of the World” An official publication of the American Airmail Society. Five editions have been published since 1935. The Cuban sections in each of the editions are detailed in the entries following. Excellent reference on first flights, routes, postal history of air mail services, and background information for first flight covers dispatched to and from Cuba. Following is an overview of the five editions provided by Perham C. Nahl, the only editor who has worked on all five editions. The first edition "Section One" was issued in 1935. It was a 130-page summary of U.S. Contract Air Mail (CAM) Routes through 1934 (no references to Cuba). The second edition, issued in 1940, was the first to go beyond CAM covers and includes a special section on Cuban flights (this too was called "First Edition"). It was 912 pages including bound supplements in 1941 and 1943. The third edition consisted of three volumes: 1947, 1950, and 1959 with a total of 1575 pages. The 1959 book updated listings in the 1947 and 1950 volumes. The fourth edition consisted of volumes I (1966), II (1969), III (1970), and IV (1971) with a total of 2291 pages. The fifth (current) edition includes volumes I (1974), II (1977), III (1978), IV (1981), V (1985), plus a 1983 Pricing Supplement updating prices in Vols.

    Trans-Atlantic Services Airmails of Jamaica Introduction From the collection of Steve Jarvis FRPSL This frame contains a selection of airmail covers highlighting the variety of topics that encompass aerophilately: a) The introduction of the first services to the island, inbound and outbound: Jamaican mail services were not introduced until late 1930 due to contractual requirements of the Government. Eventually, the contract for inbound mail was awarded to Pan American Airways. However, the outbound mail contract was awarded to a local company (Caribbean Airways) who flew mail by a symbolic initial flight but operations were thereafter sub-contracted to Pan Am. Representative covers are shown featuring these first flights, together with initial difficulties in understanding the rates to be used. b) Services and Airmail Postage Rates to the United Kingdom: Rates to the UK changed frequently during the 1930s, generally reducing due to the improving technology but also affected by the GB£ to US$ exchange rate (as Pan Am had to be paid in US$). Step rates were complicated to calculate. Up to 1938 the rate consisted of two components: Surface plus Airmail. The former was charged per ounce but the latter was charged per half ounce. Up to 1939, transatlantic mail was flown to New York and then carried by sea. In 1939 an optional (higher rate) ‘All Air’ service was provided via New York . Post war, more direct flights were introduced but not without difficulties, as shown by the BSAA crash cover. c) Services and Airmail Postage Rates to Mainland Europe: Airmail covers from Jamaica to mainland Europe during the 1930s are not common.
