  • The Dirty Dozen Brass Band
The Dirty Dozen Brass Band Celebrating over 40 years since their founding in 1977, New Orleans-based Dirty Dozen Brass Band has taken the traditional foundation of brass band music and incorporated it into a blend of genres including Bebop Jazz, Funk and R&B/Soul. This unique sound, described by the band as a ‘musical gumbo,’ has allowed the Dirty Dozen to tour across 5 continents and more than 30 countries, record 12 studio albums and collaborate with a range of artists from Modest Mouse to Widespread Panic to Norah Jones. Forty-plus years later, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band is a world famous music machine whose name is synonymous with genre- bending romps and high-octane performances. The History of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band In 1977, The Dirty Dozen Social and Pleasure Club in New Orleans began showcasing a traditional Crescent City brass band. It was a joining of two proud, but antiquated, traditions at the time: social and pleasure clubs dated back over a century to a time when black southerners could rarely afford life insurance, and the clubs would provide proper funeral arrangements. Brass bands, early predecessors of jazz as we know it, would often follow the funeral procession playing somber dirges, then once the family of the deceased was out of earshot, burst into jubilant dance tunes as casual onlookers danced in the streets. By the late '70s, few of either existed. The Dirty Dozen Social and Pleasure Club decided to assemble this group as a house band, and over the course of these early gigs, the seven-member ensemble adopted the venue's name: The Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

LOUISIANA ROMP: EXAMINING THE PERFORMANCE OF TRADITIONAL CAJUN MUSIC WITHIN A CONTEMPORARY SETTING Katherine Conrad Doss A thesis submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of the Arts in the Curriculum in Folklore. Chapel Hill 2008 Approved by: William R. Ferris James L. Peacock Patricia E. Sawin 2008 Katherine Conrad Doss ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT KATHERINE CONRAD DOSS: Louisiana Romp: Examining the Performance of Traditional Cajun Music Within a Contemporary Setting (Under the direction of William R. Ferris) The Lost Bayou Ramblers, a young Cajun band based in South Louisiana, infuse energy and vivacity into the traditional creative expression of Cajun music, as they travel to share their sound and thus their culture with the world. I suggest that the Ramblers, in the face of globalization, are purposefully engaged in protecting and enhancing their culture by performing this roots music far and near. They offer a compelling performance and thus transport, produce, and extend their culture through music, which serves as a powerful symbol, drawing each audience into participation of it. Through a focus on the specific dynamic between culture, its music, and the performance techniques of these particular cultural practitioners, I examine how music acts as an agent of cultural understanding while simultaneously transforming the place and culture that produced it. iii DEDICATION To the members of the Lost Bayou Ramblers, whose inimitable talent and vision captured me and countless others, drawing us into their world. Their willingness to extend their friendship and share their stories, insights, sense of humor, dance tips and van space is deeply appreciated.

Tulane University "Beasts" director, Ramblers songwriter to appear at Tulane Oct. 7 October 05, 2015 11:30 AM Barri Bronston [email protected] 504-314-7444 Benh Zeitlin , the Oscar-nominated director of Beasts of the Southern Wild and Louis Michot, the Grammy-nominated songwriter and fiddler with the Lost Bayou Ramblers, will discuss how artists make sense of environmental change Oct. 7 at 5:30 p.m. at Tulane University. The program, which is free and open to the public, is part of the School of Liberal Art"s “The Katrina Disaster Now” series. It will take place in the Stone Auditorium at Woldenberg Art Center on the Tulane uptown campus. The discussion will be moderated by Nick Spitzer, a professor of anthropology at Tulane and host and producer of the public radio program “American Routes.” It is being sponsored by the Environmental Studies Program. Tulane history professor Andy Horowitz, who is a teaching a special class that accompanies “The Katrina Disaster Now” series this semester, said the opportunity to have Zeitlin, Michot and Spitzer on stage together is “simply amazing.” “Benh Zeitlin and Louis Michot are extraordinary artists who use Louisiana as a prism for understanding the human experience,” Horowitz said. “And Nick Spitzer is one of the great advocates and interpreters of Louisiana"s culture.” Zeitlin"s Beasts of the Southern Wild is among the most celebrated films of the past decade, having been nominated for four Oscars. Told through the eyes of a 6-year-old girl named Hushpuppy, it takes place in a coastal Louisiana town that is able to celebrate itself even in the face of impending doom.

PRESS RELEASE Louisiana Red Hot Signs Rising Star Colin Lake National Debut One Thing That’s For Sure Out July 10th FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - July 5, 2015 CONTACT: Heather West, 773/301-5767, [email protected] New Orleans, LA -- Louisiana Red Hot Records announces the signing of slide guitarist Colin Lake, one of the Big Easy’s most compelling young roots/folk/blues singer/songwriters. While scores of talented young musicians have flocked to New Orleans in the years following Hurricane Katrina, among the most outstanding is Pacific Northwest native Colin Lake, whose passion for life and innate feel for roots music makes him perfectly suited to the culture of the Crescent City. Lake quickly established himself as a subtle yet dynamic slide guitar master, performing at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Austin City Limits Fest, Hangout Festival, the Key West Songwriters Festival and French Quarter Festival. His soulful vocals and searing touch on the lap steel reveal an affinity for the works of countless blues greats, but his knack for original songcraft truly sets him apart. Lake shines in his Louisiana Red Hot debut, One Thing That’s For Sure. He is joined by the cream of the young crop of southern musicians; including Luther Dickenson (North Mississippi All Stars), Maggie Koerner (Galactic), jazz vocalist Sasha Masakowski and actress/singer Topsy Chapman (12 Years a Slave). Paired with a band that includes veteran keyboardist Marc Adams (Eric Lindell, Tab Benoit, Marva Wright), bassist Bill Richards (who also provided horn charts) and rounded off with drummer Erik Golson, Lake delivers an album that moves from sunny summer jams to powerful love songs, haunting instrumentals and dark, scorching rockers.
