13. Press and Publicity Vulture.com. “The Vulture Diaries: George Pelecano’s Week in Culutre,” George Pelecanos, June 4, 2012. Having spent the last seven months living in New Orleans, my musical horizons have expanded considerably. In NOLA, my FM dial was set on 90.7, WWOZ, the best radio station in the country (wherever you live, you can stream it on your laptop or smartphone, and I highly recommend you do). OZ plays a variety of southern soul, blues, and jazz, and has set hours devoted to Cajun and zydeco music. I caught the Lost Bayou Ramblers, who play an amped-up blend of modern and trad , at One Eyed Jacks, a club in the Quarter, and at Jazz Fest, and they tore it up. Pilette Breakdown, their 2003 release, is a fine testament to what they’re about and a great record to play in your car or your next backyard throwdown. I also recommend The Balfa Brothers Play Traditional Cajun Music, a single-CD reissue of classic sets from 1965 and 1974. It’s the one with the yellow cover. Good times, guaranteed. USA Today, “R&B Emperor’s Biography Hails Ernie K-Doe,” Edna Gundersen, May 23, 2012. K-Doe's allure? Some knew little beyond the outrageous displays of showboating, caprice and improvised lingo ("Ma-naugahyde-thuh!") heard on his mid-'80s WWOZ radio show (coveted tapes are still traded in music circles). Or the impromptu performances at his Mother-in-Law Lounge, a funky K-Doe shrine where he sang along to jukebox tunes through a crackling cab dispatcher's microphone, hollering, "Burn, K-Doe, burn with your bad self!" Hotel de la Monnaie Newsletter, “Broadcasting the Sounds of New Orleans,” Sandra Dartus, May 20, 2012. If you love our festigals and our music, you probably need to add WWOZ to your life. Affectionately known as “O-Z”, this is a community radio station in the truest sense, broadcasting the sounds of New Orleans for over 30 years. The mission of this 501(c)3 non- profit radio station is to be the worldwide voice, archive and flag-bearer of New Orleans culture. More than 500 volunteers work together to operate the station, which is housed in the French Market’s Red Stores building, just down the street from Hotel de la Monnaie. There are no commercial interests, which gives DJs (all volunteers) freedom to play the music they love. Approximately 75% of funding comes from listener support. OZ’s doors are always open to musicians to talk about their latest projects and gigs, and often interviews include live performances. The station broadcasts live annually from the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and the French Quarter Festival.

You can listen to WWOZ at 90.7FM in New Orleans or via live streaming on WWOZ.org. There are also free Android, Blackberry and i-Phone Apps available. Take advantage of this opportunity to have a little bit of New Orleans with you wherever you are!To learn more about WWOZ, donate or become a volunteer, visit WWOZ.org or call 504-568-1239.

14. Press and Publicity (continued)

Nola.com, “Apollo Theater Thursday, May 17,” Allison Fensterstock, May 14, 2012

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the Jazz Foundation of America - a 21-year-old nonprofit whose focus is on providing financial, legal and medical assistance to jazz and blues musicians in need – mobilized to establish an emergency housing fund, a performance employment program and over a quarter of a million dollars toward instrument replacement for Gulf Coast musicians.

A lot of that aid money likely came from the JFA’s blowout annual fundraiser at Harlem’s historic Apollo Theater, which benefits its Jazz Musicians Emergency Fund. The 11th annual “Great Night In Harlem” concert, produced by impresario Hal Willner, kicks off at 6 p.m. Central time Thursday, May 17 and will feature performances by Dr. John, Macy Gray, Randy Weston, Bono, Bettye Lavette, the Rebirth Brass Band and many others (along with a special appearance by Quincy Jones).

New Orleans community radio station WWOZ will be in the house Thursday night, broadcasting the performance live over local airwaves and streaming online at wwoz.org.

Visit WWOZ’s website for details.

New Orleans Opera Examiner, “Opera Represented at New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival!” Giovanna Joseph, May 9, 2012.

Since the festival's beginnings in 1970, crowds have been treated to various genres of popular music. This year, the audiences at the Kids Tent and the Zatarain's/WWOZ Jazz Tent were probably surprised to find opera on the lineup.
