A Partnership Between Major League Baseball and the United States Conference of Mayors MAYORS A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEball AND THE UNITED STATES CONFERENCE OF MAYORS 2019 Bryan K. Barnett Mayor of Rochester Hills, MI President Greg Fischer Mayor of Louisville Vice President Nan Whaley Mayor of Dayton Second Vice President Tom Cochran CEO and Executive Director The United States Conference of Mayors is the official non-partisan organization of cities with each city represented in the Conference by its chief elected official, the mayor. The 2019 PLAY BALL SUMMER has built upon past success and proved to be the most successful one to date. This year, the number of cities and mayors engaged with PLAY BALL increased, along with the number of youth engaged in PLAY BALL activities up to 37,303. On January 23, 2019 at the United States Conference of Mayors 87th Winter Meeting in Washington, DC, Tony Reagins, Major League Baseball Executive Vice President, Baseball & Softball Youth Development and youth baseball ambassador Mo’ne Davis helped launch the 2019 Program and gave remarks about the importance of PLAY BALL, and the positive impact baseball and softball has on communities. Shortly after this announcement, it was time to celebrate MLB Opening Day where mayor’s shared pictures donning their favorite team’s hat on social media. Next came the 87th Annual Meeting in Honolulu where Tony Reagins and Hawaiian baseball legends Shane Victorino and Sid Fernandez were joined by the Honolulu Little League champions to promote 2019 PLAY BALL SUMMER initiative. The meeting culminated with a special visit to the grave site of “The Father of Baseball,” Alexander Cartwright by PLAY BALL Beverly Hills Mayor John A. Mirisch and his son, Vincent. There were plenty of new cities which celebrated PLAY BALL this year, some of which held events in conjunction with the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association. Many cities hosted events in conjunction with their local Boys & Girls Clubs of America, a strategy several cities took advantage of to increase youth engagement when hosting their events. This year youth engagement was 37,303 up from 36,246 total reported youth participation last year. Included in the report are descriptions of events held both in conjunction with little leagues, parks and recreation, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America which can be used as a guide when planning events for next year. Additionally, this year there was local press coverage for many of the events. Examples of this coverage (Newspaper, blogs, online, etc.) can be found along with examples of social media posts. 1 PLAY BALL CITIES/ MAYORAL IMPACT MAYORS’ PLEDGED ON YOUTH (United States including Puerto Rico) ENGAGEMENT 125 15 The 2019 Mayors PLAY BALL initiative engaged over 37,303* youth in reported 16 205 events held all across the United States. This is an increase from the year prior. 17 255 As in past years the mayor’s planned innovative events for the community, and most cities partnered with their local youth 18 304 teams and/or Major or Minor League Clubs. 19 331 16 20,405 17 35,136 18 36,246 19 37,303 *USCM reported PLAY BALL events 2 2019 PLAY BALL CITIES Addison, IL Central Falls, RI Fort Worth, TX Las Vegas, NV Oklahoma City, OK During this time of soaring unemployment, financial insecurity, and growing hunger, we urge Congress to temporarily increase SNAP benefit levels in the next federal COVID-19 relief package. America’s cities are on the front line of responding to unprecedented disruption to local economies triggered by COVID-19. As mayors, we need every option available to fight hunger and stimulate the economy in our cities. SNAP is a proven solution to both challenges. By providing families with a grocery benefit they can use to purchase food directly, SNAP is a safe, effective way to ensure that low-income children and their families can get the food they need during this unprecedented crisis. While the FFCRA provided USDA with authority to increase emergency SNAP allotments for existing SNAP households to the maximum benefit, the most vulnerable families—roughly 12 million people, including 5 million children—received no additional nutrition assistance because their household already received the maximum SNAP benefit.

The Commission, established to resolve a long-standing debate regarding the origins of baseball, relied on evidence provided by James Sullivan, a secretary working at Spalding Sporting Goods, owned by former player Albert Spalding. Sullivan solicited information from former players and fans, edited the information, and presented it to the Commission. One person’s allegation stood out above the rest; Abner Graves claimed that Abner Doubleday “invented” baseball sometime around 1839 in Cooperstown, New York. It was not true; baseball did not have an “inventor” and if it did, it was not Doubleday, who was at West Point during the time in question.

  • A National Tradition
Baseball A National Tradition. by Phyllis McIntosh. “As American as baseball and apple pie” is a phrase Americans use to describe any ultimate symbol of life and culture in the United States. Baseball, long dubbed the national pastime, is such a symbol. It is first and foremost a beloved game played at some level in virtually every American town, on dusty sandlots and in gleaming billion-dollar stadiums. But it is also a cultural phenom- enon that has provided a host of colorful characters and cherished traditions. Most Americans can sing at least a few lines of the song “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” Generations of children have collected baseball cards with players’ pictures and statistics, the most valuable of which are now worth several million dollars. More than any other sport, baseball has reflected the best and worst of American society. Today, it also mirrors the nation’s increasing diversity, as countries that have embraced America’s favorite sport now send some of their best players to compete in the “big leagues” in the United States. AN ANALYSIS OF THE AMERICAN OUTDOOR SPORT FACILITY: DEVELOPING AN IDEAL TYPE ON THE EVOLUTION OF PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL AND FOOTBALL STRUCTURES DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Chad S. Seifried, B.S., M.Ed. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2005 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Donna Pastore, Advisor Professor Melvin Adelman _________________________________ Professor Janet Fink Advisor College of Education Copyright by Chad Seifried 2005 ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to analyze the physical layout of the American baseball and football professional sport facility from 1850 to present and design an ideal-type appropriate for its evolution. Specifically, this study attempts to establish a logical expansion and adaptation of Bale’s Four-Stage Ideal-type on the Evolution of the Modern English Soccer Stadium appropriate for the history of professional baseball and football and that predicts future changes in American sport facilities. In essence, it is the author’s intention to provide a more coherent and comprehensive account of the evolving professional baseball and football sport facility and where it appears to be headed. This investigation concludes eight stages exist concerning the evolution of the professional baseball and football sport facility. Stages one through four primarily appeared before the beginning of the 20th century and existed as temporary structures which were small and cheaply built. Stages five and six materialize as the first permanent professional baseball and football facilities. Stage seven surfaces as a multi-purpose facility which attempted to accommodate both professional football and baseball equally.

A VALUABLE HOBBY The Knickerbocker Club played baseball at Hoboken's "Elysian Fields" on October 6, 1845. That game appears to be the first recorded by an American newspaper. This Currier & Ives lithograph, which is online via the Library of Congress, depicts the Elysian Fields. As the nineteenth century moved into its fourth decade, Alexander Cartwright wrote rules for the Knickerbockers, an amateur New York City baseball club. Those early rules (which were adopted on the 23rd of September, 1845) provide a bit of history (perhaps accurate, perhaps not) for the “Recently Invented Game of Base Ball.” For many years the games of Townball, Rounders and old Cat have been the sport of young boys. Recently, they have, in one form or another, been much enjoyed by gentlemen seeking wholesome American exercise. In 1845 Alexander Cartwright and other members of the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club of New York codified the unwritten rules of these boys games into one, and so made the game of Base Ball a sport worthy of attention by adults. We have little doubt but that this gentlemanly pastime will capture the interest and imagination of sportsman and spectator alike throughout this country. Within two weeks of adopting their rules, members of the Knickerbocker Club played an intra-squad game at the Elysian Fields (in Hoboken, New Jersey).
