Creative Map Making Information and Communication Design By Cassidy Hatch Cindy Buckley-Koren 2018/2019 Creative Brief Research For this project, we all had to choose a map of our choice to re-design and make them look and feel more The Onondaga Creekwalk is a nice trail that runs Interesting and informative than they already are. throughout downtown Syracuse and up into the inner harbor and this map doesn’t do the trail any For my map I chose to re-design the Onondaga Creekwalk justice. trail in Syracuse, New York. The creekwalk is a very nice walk and great way to get some exercise throughout downtown. My new plan would be to create a new map of the Along the trail are signs that describe Syracuse’s history along Creekwalk but include Syracuse attractions to see the trail and has video QR codes to scan to watch along the along the trail. trail. Due to the creation of the creekwalk, the city of Syracuse have cleaned up the creek a lot - ending “phase 1” in 2011 - and they hope to clean it up even more. The creekwalk begins from Armory square and ends towards the inner harbor and the mall, Destiny USA (one of Syracuse’s popular attractions). What I was thinking was that after you walk the trail, its nice On Top: to head back downtown to Armory square to go eat and Map of Onondaga lake and of downtown Syracuse pop in some stores to go somewhere else before going home. New Color Palette This was my final color palette and I liked these lighter colors a lot better and they were more easy to This was my original color palette look at. but there was too many colors and they all contrasted each other too much. Ideation / Development Development 2. Digital sketch I then moved onto my digital sketch where i copied the layout of the original map and changed and used very basic colors. 4. Second Map Design After the first map I designed, I decided to change some of the colors and add in 1. Map First Sketch landmarks along the sides of the map and This was my first really rough original re-colored those too. sketch. I would do the same layout as the original creekwalk map, but put the map on a more readable background and add in the Syracuse attractions along the trail. 3. First Map Layout 5. Third Map Design I finally came up with a layout and I then completely changed everything used the color scheme that I had from about my design and re-picked the color the beginning. I added keys to the map palette. I decided to add in the history signs and lots more roads and added the and what was described on them on the highways too. I wasn’t really pleased side of the map. I then added a compass in with how much the colors contrasted the final map and fixed the legend. against each other. Conclusion Final Map This was the final map that I came up with. I added textures to each of the layers to give it more character and changed the name of the map to just the Onondaga Creekwalk with an explanation of Syracuse attractions on the side. I then made a compass rose and added the logo of the creek walk, which I also changed the colors of. Then I added the building drawings and put only the interesting places that were right next to the creekwalk to go to. I decided to blow up the size of the buildings/landmarks to the sides of the creekwalk and put the name of the place underneath the building with a line leading to the actual location that was marked with a dot. Overall, I’m a lot more pleased with how the map turned out. To me, it feels a lot more light and breezy and airy, perfect for the creekwalk. I’m glad I totally changed everything about the map that I had before. Everything looks a lot more professional looking than it did previously..
