Background The greatest conquerors knew that if you took away a culture's heroes, you have, in essence, conquered them. To choose our own heroes, free of interference or coercion, is a sign of personal and national democracy. Canadians have generally been able to choose their own heroes, and whom we have chosen to remember tells us about who we are and who we were.
