ABSTRACT This dissertation presents a two-part study of sporting practices of Southern Ontario Black women, between the 1920s and the 1940s, aimed at developing a socio- cultural history of sport that includes narratives from marginalized groups. Given sport’s traditional position as a masculine domain, as well as Canada’s status as a patriarchal White supremacy, the accounts presented in this work centre Black women’s sport experiences through an intersectional perspective. It is argued that, by virtue of their simultaneously racialized and gendered identities, Black women had distinct sporting experiences from those of White women and men and Black men. The first study used archived oral histories of a group of Black women who lived across Southern Ontario to document a range of activities which located women in sporting spaces. These women were not just athletes, but also coaches, umpires, and spectators. Also, men and boys were influential in these practices, often introducing women to sport. Still, for many, participation in youth gave way to being in the stands in adulthood. These narratives demonstrate the influence of gender norms and racial identity on women’s sporting experiences. The second study focused on Jean Lowe, a champion Toronto track and field athlete in the late 1930s and 1940s who also played softball and basketball. The main source of evidence was the record of Lowe’s performance through two widely circulated newspapers: Toronto’s Globe and Mail and Daily Star. The media often praised Lowe, and her narrative denotes a Black woman’s ascent and integration in a White-dominated community. But, her seemingly unproblematic athletic career, as well as her qualification i as representing an image of pulchritude, stand in sharp contrast with her sustained designation as “dusky,” her frequent inclusion into discussions of the ‘Black athlete’s’ threatening rise, and her permanent departure from the city in the mid-1940s. Lowe’s story underscores the reticulation of ‘acceptance’ and Othering that historically characterized Canadian racial relations. Through both the oral histories and the media, it is found that insidious notions of race and gender remained embedded in some Black women’s sport experiences, even as sport expanded and shifted the lens through which society viewed them.     Career transitions of professional athletes Review : Sociology and Philosophy A study on professional athlete career transition: an overview of the literature Keiko Jodai* and Haruo Nogawa* *Graduate School,School of Sport and Health Science, Juntendo University 1-1, Hiragagakuendai, Inzai, Chiba, 270-1695 Japan [email protected] [Received February 25, 2011 ; Accepted August 22, 2011] Since the 1990’s, there have been many research studies that focus on career transitions for professional athletes in Japan. The main reason for this is that during that period, amateur sports teams, such as soccer and basketball, were spun off from divisions of companies to become separate professional teams. Consequently, this changed forced how athletes view the transition to a second career because they can no longer count on being employed by the companies that had previously run teams as part of their corporate operations. Research studies primarily covered top athletes but did not distinguish between the amateur and professional athletes. In reviewing the assumptions and results of such previous research with respect to professional status, this study will present the basic themes of such research. For example, early research investigated the actual reasons why and how athletes decide to change career; whereas later research seek to study how athletes specifi cally deal with career changes. Finally, in order to determine the effectiveness of actual support programs, the authors of this study proposes that more thorough investigation is needed to scrutinize how the career transitions of ex-professional football players have changed over time by using a “longitudinal” analysis. Bobbie excelled at hockey, bas- ketball, softball, and track and field, and she became one of Canada’s first female Olympic medallists. Just as remarkable as her talent was her extraordinary sense of fair play. She greeted obstacles with courage, hard work, and a sense of humor, and she always put the team ahead of herself. In doing so, Bobbie set an example as a true athletic hero. AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY: Like Bobbie Rosenfeld, Anne Dublin came to Canada at a young age. She worked as an elementary school teacher for over 25 years, and taught in Kingston, Toronto, Winnipeg, and Nairobi. Yet despite its extensive history of academic excellence, on June 20, 2016, Vancouver School Board staff placed Britannia on a list of potential school closures expected to take effect on June 30, 2017. Among the criteria for determining whether a school should be closed are vulnerability of population, heritage status and seismic safety, which has left many wondering how Britannia ever ended up on a potential closure list. By any measure, Britannia’s student population (including ~180 students of Aboriginal decent) is the most vulnerable in the city, with 30% of students living households that receive income assistance, or are who working poor. A 2009 VSB report on Inner-City Schools noted that “the Social Service Index (SSI) five year average for Britannia Secondary is 29.3.

    Media Release Track at West Vancouver Secondary named “Harry Jerome Oval” WEST VANCOUVER, B.C. (February 23, 2021): West Vancouver Schools, in partnership with the District of West Vancouver, has announced that the running track at West Vancouver Secondary School is being named in honour of one of Canada’s most celebrated athletes, Harry Jerome. Once recognized as one of the fastest men in the world, Harry grew up on the North Shore. He trained and competed at the West Van Secondary track in the late 1950s, before going on to a career in which he set seven world sprint records. In the 1960s, he represented Canada in three Olympic Games despite suffering potentially career-ending hamstring and quadricep injuries. He also received harsh criticism in the media across Canada when those injuries prevented him from completing competitions. Harry was awarded the Order of Canada in 1971 and later named British Columbia’s athlete of the 20th century. He died suddenly at the age of 42, but not before devoting the last decade of his life to building programs designed to inspire Canadians to achieve their own athletic dreams. Harry’s distinguished athletic career is just part of his story. Harry showed remarkable resilience in the face of deep racial injustice. He and his family members were ignored and rejected by neighbours and victimized by schoolmates in the years after moving to North Vancouver in 1951. He and his sister Valerie Jerome finally found acceptance competing in high school track. In 1958, both were invited to join a new track club, the Optimist Striders which trained at Brockton Oval in Stanley Park.

From the early 1900s to the late-1960s, a small Black community lived in Strathcona, a neighbourhood east of downtown Vancouver. (Refer to Home page on website to locate Strathcona within Vancouver.) While the Strathcona neighbourhood itself has always been ethnically diverse, with many Italian, Chinese and Japanese Canadians, a number of Black families, Black businesses, and the city’s only Black church – the Fountain Chapel – were located there. As such, Strathcona was the first and last neighourhood in Vancouver with a substantial concentrated Black population. The story of this fascinating community is largely unknown in British Columbia, yet the community thrived for nearly six decades. The BlackStrathcona project depicts the cultural life, institutions and social geography of the community and celebrates its creativity and resilience.
