The purpose of this class is to acquaint the beginner backpacker with the knowledge of the environment, how to find your way, how to be prepared for all conditions, understanding essentials to take along with you, understanding nature and how it can assist you, and the preparation and execution of a backpacking trip.

Trip will leave from the parking lot behind the P.E. Trailer. Loading & leaving time approximately 12:30 Noon. Shopping, packing, etc. should be done before the day we leave.

Attendance : It is expected that students will attend all classes for a letter grade. The trip is required for a grade in this class. Grading : Quizzes 10%, Equipment Care & Usage 20%, Skill Tests 60%, Observing all guidelines, quizzes 10%. A = 90% B = 80% C = 70% D = 60% F = 50%

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

1. Demonstrate the ability to erect and take down a tent.

2. Prepare a checklist of equipment to be used on the trip you will take.

3. With a partner, prepare a menu for a weekend trip including cost of . Include 2 breakfasts, 1 lunch, 2 suppers, snacks.

4. Demonstrate how to pack, carry, and adjust a loaded pack.

5. Demonstrate good hiking technique. Demonstrate fitness level by correct preparation for a trip.

6. Be able to orient yourself with a map and compass and be able to find the eight cardinal points without the aid of a compass.

7. Demonstrate how to start a stove and properly prepare a meal.

8. Demonstrate correct technique during (approx. 10 mile hike) on a weekend camp out.

9. Condition outside of class by stair stepping, jogging, and stretching. P. 18 - 21
