AUDREY BALE

Audrey Bale died peacefully aged 87on 29th October 2008. Her funeral was held on Monday 10th November at 11.30am at the North East Surrey Crematorium, Garth Road, Morden. It was attended by the County President, Don Webb, and other Surrey officials. Also present several former members of Selsonia LAC including her daughter Kathryn, Cathy White, Olympic sprinter Marianne Dew (now Mrs Black), Val Morgan and Pat Mead. Audrey was President of the Surrey Womens AAA in 1973 and a long-time field judge. During the Second World War she served in Women's Royal Army Corps after which she joined Selsonia Ladies AC as Audrey Duckett to support Kathryn and where she met her future second husband, Reg Bale, who was a founder member of Selsonia LAC in 1933. She was a long-serving member of the SWAAA where she became Treasurer from 1969 - 1979 and along with Jean Hutcherson and Win Shepherd, for many years, she "manned" the gate at our Track & Field Championships held at Motspur Park, Wimbledon Park, Croydon and Kingsmeadow. She is survived by her son, Martin, and daughter, Kathyrn, who was a successful athlete winning several County titles and became an international shot putter and discus thrower. Following the demise of Selsonia LAC she switched to Belgrave Harriers. She moved to Worthing following the death of her first husband Bob Duckett but still regularly attended County meetings. Her last few years were spent at Link House, Raynes Park where she was nearer to Martin. NATIONAL CHAMPIONS 2008

ORGANISERS OF NON-STADIUM EVENTS

At a recent Cross Country event an athlete was taken ill during the race at a point distant from the race HQ. The athlete concerned has since recovered but the incident highlighted the difficulties of communicating from “remote” parts of the course to the organisers. Mobile phones can be an answer but checks should be made to ensure complete coverage. Surrey CAA has radios that organisers can hire (contact Mike Scott 01276 471960 or michael-g- [email protected]). This incident should act as a prompt to organisers to review whether their communications are sufficient. 1 OFFICIALS

SURREY COUNTY ATHLETICS SQUAD

The Surrey County Athletics Squad consists of 140 athletes. They held their first Squad Day on 19th October 2008 with 120 attendees. As well as athlete development there will be a focus on coach development with the event coaches taking on a mentoring role as well as a coaching role. Athletics (South East Region) has created a coach apprenticeship programme to run alongside the regional and county squads. All coaches, regardless of having an athlete who is attending the squad, will have the opportunity to become a County or Regional Apprentice Coach. SCAN
