The bracteolesare pafticularly usef'ulin distinguisbingthe two species:linear-spathulate with long clawsand short,t rounded(rarely apiculate) laminae in A. venalosa, and sessile to sub-sessilewith Iarge, acuteto acuminatelaminae in A. lanigera. The septist\ A. venulostlare free to shortly un ited at thebase, or occasionally, especially specimens from New SouthWales, they are free to l/2-united; ir A. Lanigerathe sepalsare 2/3-3l4-united. PodsofA. verrlosa arestraight while thoseofA. latiger,i are at least arcuateto once-coilgd,insofar as they are known, for we have not seenthe pods of var' v,hanii.

While indumentumin the two speciesis variablethere are pattens in density, hair type and orientation, particularly on branchletsand peduncles, whjch make theseuseful secondarycharacter for distinguishingthe species(see descriptions below). The resin-hairswhich are common in A. venulosabuttnfrequentin A. lanigera ate simtlarto thosefound in A. oswaldil F Muell. and many other species. They appealsimilar to the C hairs Rutishauserand Sattler(1986) describedin A. longip edunculata P edley.

The two speciesreplace each other geographioally-.A. Lanigeraoccurs in southernVictoria to northern New South Walest A. venulo.saextends liom central easternNew South Wales nofth to southernQueensland.

Cunn./LachlanRiver/New South Wales,May 1817,A. Cunningham422". It was this valve that Benthamdescribed as the fruit of A. lanigera.

Synonomy. We have not seenspecimens, either at K or PR, annotatedby Domin asA. Ianigerq var. bracltyphylla; this name was based on a Macarthur collection from N.S.W. However, there is a "lanigera Macarthur specimenat K, annotatedby Bentham as Cunn. var' brevifolia", a name which was never published. As this specimenaccords well with Domin's very brief protologue and as his "brachyphylla" "brevifolia", epithet is the Greek equivalentof Bentham's it is possiblethat the Macarthur specimenis the type of Domin's name, even though the authorhas not annotatedthe sheet.

Affin.ities. This specieshas been variously confusedwithA. velulosa which is indeedclosely related but branchletsand pedunclesofA. venulosahave many black resin-hairsinterrnixed with long ones, shorterstipules that have a thickenedbase, longer pulvini, velvety peduncles,linear-spathulate bracteoles, free or nearly free sepalsand straightpods.

Consequently,we concludethat this label is probably wrongly attachedto this specimen, but this does not alter its statusas holotype. The Cunningham85/1827 specinens, plus the specinenstamped Herbariun Benthanianum, rtlountedon the samesheet, are regarded as probable isotypes' even though they are said to have beencollected fiom north of the Dunaresque River'

Afizlrles. Closely relatedto A. Ianigera yar.larlgera (with which it hasolien beenmerged as a valiery) which iacksblack resin-hairs on thebranchlets; its bracteolesare sessile or nearlyso; its sepalsare at leasttwo thjrdsunited and the pod cutvedto coiled.

Di,gctLssion.Bentlram (in Mueller 1859: 124)commenting on Mueller's A . subternataremarked:"The arrangementof the phyllodia (should it pl'ove constant)is singular; they are neither verticillate ..... nor solitaryat eachnode ....;but in most casesin fasciclesol 2,3, or 4 from eachnode ....". The anangement of the pbyllodes remains the best indicator of the group: from small protuberances (reducedbranchlets?), often clothedin a resin-mass,arise several slender, terete phyllodes, each with its minutestipules. From the sarneknobs alise either fully developedbranchlets, solitary peduncles or both.

In Tindale and Kodela (.1992 59)A. manipuLarisis referredto under an earlier manusariptname 'A. that w€ had appliedto this species, namely, manipula".

Conservationstatus. A Priority 1 taxon in the Departmentof Consgrvationand Land Management's Declared Rare and Priority Flora List. Seeend ofthis issue.

Etymology. The new speciestakes its nametion the fascicledarrangement of the phyllodes;the name is an ridjectival fbrm ol nlanipulus,Latin for handl'ul,sheaf or bundle.

TJpificqtion. The type sheetof A . cognata atHerb. K suppol'tsthree specimenswhich may possibly havebeen taken tiom threeseparate and consequently a lectotypehas been selected liom among them. According to the specimenlabel, thesegatherings were made by F. Mueller at Twofbld Bay on the south coast of New South Wales. The lower right-hand specimenhas been designatedas the leatotypebecause it bestcharacterizes the taxon; that is, its phyllodes arevery narrow, 3-nervedwith the mid-nerve more prominent than the flanking nerves, its pedunclesare short (3-4 mm long), and the headshave about 12 flowers. The left-handspecimen (paralectotype) is in immature bud and has phyllode nervatureidentical to that of the lectotype. The uppermostspecimen (paralectotype) differs slightly from the other two in that its pedunclesare 7-8 mm long and the phyllodesare up to 5-nerved (due to the coalescenceof longitudinally trending lateral nerves);these two charactersare within the range of variation ol A. subporosa.

Affinities. is very closely relatedto A. sLtbporosabutis usually distinguishedby its narrower, more elongate, usually 3-nervedphyllodes, usuirlly shorter peduncles, fewer flowers per headand slightly narowerpods (seekey below). Indeed, when Mueller describedA.subporosafrom material which he collected at Twofold Bay, he included within its circumscription specimensthat were later segregatedby Bentham asA. subporctsavar.lia€ariJ, rhe basionym of A. cognata Domin. The fact that Mueller did not considerthe taxasufficiently distinct in the field to warranttheir separation or even mention the two forms in his protologue, attests to their close relationship The key below revealsthat the quantitativedifferences between these two speciesare not greatand that in somecases the rangesof vadation overlap. Judgingfrom herbariumnaterial we have seen, other localities, apart from Twofbld Bay, where the two may possibly be sympatric or parapatdcare around Bega (New South Wales) and Mallacoota (Victo a) and it is suggestedthat tield studies in thesearea may be instructivein trying to determineto what extent(if at all) the two taxa intergrade.Court (pers comm ) has indicatedthat sympatry betweentlte two is very limited. In the absenceofpersonally conducted tield work, we havefollowed recent authors, for exampleCourt (1973)and Costermans (198l), in recognizingA. ,o|notars I di'tinctspecier.

4. Acacia hemignosta F. Muell., J. Proc. Linn. Soc., Bot. 3: 134 (1859)

Racospermahemignort&m (F. Muell.) Pedley,Austrobaileya 2:349 (1987). Lectotype(here selected): "Point Pearce", mouth of Victoria River, Northem Territory, September 1855, F. Mueller 87 (K; isolecto; MEL, NSW). Paralectotype:fAlbert River], Gulf of Carpentaria,lQueenslandf, F Mueller 34 (K. MEL).

A. cLoncurrensisDomin, Biblioth. Bot.89:262 (1926) Type: nearCloncurry, Queensland, 1910, K. Domin (holo: PR, 4.v.,lide Pedley 1978:219).

TypiJication. In the protologue of A. hemignostaM\tellercited two ofhis own collections (no 87, a flowering specimenfrom the Victoria River, N.T., selectedabove as lectotype and no. 34' fruiting specimenftom the Albert River, Qld, cited above as a paralectotype) Mueller also listed two other "Gilbeft localities(butdid not cite specimens),namely, fuver, RoperRiver"; we havenot found Mueller material of A. hemignostafrom either of theselocalities at K or MEL Although the specimensof Mueller 87 anrl 34 representthe sametaxon it seemsdesirable to selectone as a lectotype. ordinarily, the material in the author's own herbariumwould be a logical choicebut the two type sheetsat MEL (sheetnos. I17093 and 117094)bear only fragmentsand on the lattersheet there are bits of both Mueller 34 and 87 mixed. Consequently,we have selectedthe K sheetas lectotypebecause (1) it is a completespecimen; (2) its label Sivesa more precisetype-locality; and (3) the sheetbears Bentham's annotationand it was he who shepherdedMueller's manuscdptthrough to publication, often adding "Point significantly to it by way of notesand observations. Pearce"on the lectotypelabel cannotbe "Ad locatedon present-daymaps but the MEL I 17094sheet gives ostium fluminis Victoriae" which appearsin the protologue and is in the Northem Teritory; both Mueller 87 and 34 have Mueller''s handwdting on the labels and his collection numbers.

5. Acacia latescensBenth., London J. Bot. l: 380 (1842)

Racospermalarescens (Benth.) Pedley, Austrobaileya2: 571 (1988). Lectotype (seePedley 1974: 2): May Day Island,Van DiemanGulf, LNorthernTerritoryl, May 1818,A Cunningham295(K; iso: PERTH 00975559 fragment ex K; ?isolecto:A, NY).

A. clineuraF. Muell., J. Proc.Linn. Soc.,Bot. 3: 130 (1859) Type: upperRoper River, Northern Territory, F. MuelLer3l (holo: MEL; iso: K, PERTH 00975567- fragment ex MEL)

A. .lissofteurqF.Muell.,S. Sci.Rec.2(7): 151 (1882). Syntype (1): vicinity ofPortDarwin, Northern Territory, F. Schultz336 (MEL, K, PERTH 00748943- fragmentex MEL). Syntype(2): near Liverpool River, Northern TelTitory,B. Gulliver (:|lEL, PERTH 00975540- fragment ex MEL).

Typification. Although the protologueofA. dlneura lists both the Roper and Limmen Bight rivers, the holotype at MEL is annotatedwith only the RoperRiver. In our experienceit is sometimesdifficult to reconcilefully the extantcollections wjth what appearsto be cited materialin Mueller publications.

Morphotogy. As is the case with several other of the northern, tropical species, the filaments of A. k escensarc joined irregularly to a levcl of about the baseof the lobes of the corolla

Lectottpe (here selected):Twofold Bay, LN.S.W.l,F. Mueller s.n.(MEL 1000861, leti-handflowering specimenon sheet;isolecto: K). Paralectotypes:(1) righlhand specimen(in bud) on lectotypesheet. Typificution. The specimenscomprising the original rnateriallol A. subporosaare all refenable to this speciesbut appearto representat least three separategatherings. The lectotype (in flower) and the paralectotype(in immaturebud) which areboth mounted on MEL 1000861,have broader phyllodes than the other two paralectotypes,i.e. 7-9 mm wide comparedwith 4-7 mm wide.

At'finities. Acacia subporosais most closely allied toA. cognata. The differencesbetween the two speciesare not great and our review of existing herbariumnaterial suggeststhat they may intergrade (.seeA. cognata abovetbr discussion).
