Maas-van de Kamer2, L.Y.Th. Westra2 Key words Abstract A taxonomic revision is given of the Neotropical genus Oxandra (Annonaceae). Within the genus 27 spe- cies are recognized, 4 of which are new to science. Most of the species are occurring in tropical South America, Annonaceae whereas a few (6) are found in Mexico and Central America and two in the West Indies (Greater and Lesser Antilles). Neotropics A key to all species is provided. The treatment includes chapters about the history of the genus and morphology. Oxandra All species are fully described, including full synonymy, notes on distribution and ecology, field observations (when taxonomy available), vernacular names (when given), and mostly short notes about relationships of the species concerned. For vernacular names each species a distribution map is made. At the end of the revision a complete list of vernacular names is included. Bot. Fennici 44 (Supplement A): 79–132. The bark anatomy of 32 Neotropical genera of Annonaceae was studied. A family description based on Neotropical genera and a discussion of individual bark compo- nents are presented. Selected character states at the family and genus levels are sur- veyed for identification purposes. This is followed by a discussion on the taxonomical and phylogenetic relevance of bark characters according to a phylogram in preparation based on molecular characters. Although the value of many bark anatomical characters turned out to be insignificant in systematic studies of the family, some features lend support to recent phylogenetic results based on morphological and molecular data sets. The taxonomically most informative features of the bark anatomy are sclerification of phellem cells, shape of fibre groups and occurrence of crystals in bark components. Traditional herbal mixtures in Eastern Cuba are investigated through interviews with 130 knowledgeable people and traditional healers of the provinces of Santiago de Cuba and Guantánamo. One hundred seventy plant species and other products are used in 199 formulas, galones being the more complex. Cocos nucifera L. (Arecaceae), Bidens pilosa L. (Asteraceae), Cissus sicyoides L. (Vitaceae), Erythroxylum havanense Jacq. (Erythroxylaceae) and Stachytarpheta jamaicensis (L.) Vahl. (Verbenaceae)are the species most frequently cited. The ecological distribution of the taxa and cultural and anthropological aspects of mixtures are highlighted; particularly American and African influences that have shaped local knowledge about plant combinations are discussed. © 2003 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. It is known only from the type locality, along the coastal foothills of the Sierra de Coalcomán in the municipality of Aquila, Michoacán, Mexico, where it grows in rocky canyons and hillsides with tropical subdeciduous forest at elevations of 550–600 m. As the specifi c epithet suggest, this species is distinctive due to the size of its leaves, and these are the largest within the genus Dioscorea and measure as much as 60 cm long and 65 cm wide. Unlike most members of the genus, fl owering occurs at the end of the dry season on newly produced stems before the leaves mature. Dioscorea megaphylla belongs to sect. Macrogynodium and is closely related to D. nel- sonii and D. carpomaculata. Key words: Disocorea, Mexico, section Macrogynodium. Resumen: Se describe e ilustra Dioscorea megaphylla (Dioscoreaceae) como especie nueva. [email protected] Resumen Las plantas de la familia Annonaceae están ubicadas en el Orden de las Magnoliales y su distribución es pantropical, aunque mayormente son neo- tropicales. En este artículo se sistematiza la información de los géneros y especies en México, encontrada en diversas bases de datos. En el territorio nacional se encuentran 60 especies ubicadas en 12 géneros, y mayormente distribuidas en el centro y sur del país. Una tercera parte de las anonáceas son endémicas, incluyendo el género Tridimeris. Nueve anonáceas están en la lista roja de la UICN. Chiapas alberga 9 géneros y 37 especies, nueve endémicas. AbstRAct Annonaceae species are placed in the Magnoliales order, they have a Pantropical distribution, although most of they inhabit in the Neotropic. In this article the actual stage of the richness and distribution of Annonaceae family in Mexico are described. In the national territory there are 59 species in 12 genera. Three of for subfamily are living in the center and south of the country. The third part of the family is endemic but also the genera Tridimeris. Six of this species are in risk (UICN list), two species are cultivated. -

WOODLEY3 'Department of Zoology, University of the West Indies, Mona, Kingston 7, Jamaica 2NaturaI History Division, Institute of Jamaica, 16 East Street, Kingston, Jamaica 3Discovery Bay Marine Laboratory, Discovery Bay, St. Ann, Jamaica ABSTRACT.— The eggs of E. marcellinus are unsculptured except for a pattern of numerous, incised small circles. Three larval morphs were observed: blue-green, pale brown and black. Pupation may last 7-10 days or there might be pupal diapause which is broken by moisture. The only known food plant is Oxandra lanceolata, a tree which is mostly common in the central and western parishes. The only known breeding site is at Rozelle in the eastern parish of St. Thomas, but indications are that other sites are likely to occur in central Jamaica.
