MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

LINE DRIVES THE NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 47, No. 5, October 16, 2008) The President’s Message By NCBWA President Joe Dier Membership: Fall baseball is in the air, and that means that the pre-2009 NCBWA All-America team cannot be too far behind; please stay tuned for emails from the NCBWA about the nomination process and email them to the appropriate regional representatives. On another pleasant note, I am honored to become the 47th president of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Let me give a major set of kudos to 2007-08 president Shamus McKnight of Nebraska for his tremendous leadership and work. Shamus has been a solid part of the presence of NCBWA in Omaha at the NCAA World Series for several years and represents the organization in a wide variety of positive ways. It has been a pleasure to serve under him in the NCBWA officers’ rotation. This group has meant so much to the national awareness and promotion of college baseball through the Dick Howser Trophy, the Stopper of the Year Award, the Pro-Line Athletic All-America and Freshman All- America teams, Pro-Line Athletic Players of the Week, and all the all-region and all-district squads. We know we have the fairest means of selecting our honors’ teams of any group nationally, and this lends great credibility to our organization. Please feel free to contact me or any one of the 2008-09 officers (see contact numbers and emails later in this newsletter) as we approach a very critical year in the history of college baseball.

A’s News Clips, Saturday, June 5, 2010 Oakland A's fall to Twins in 11 By Curtis Pashelka, Oakland Tribune What seemed less likely for the A's? That they would already have nine home runs for the month or that Dallas Braden would still be searching for another win almost four weeks after he pitched a perfect game? Both figured to be longshots, but that's exactly where things stand after the A's lost 5-4 to the Minnesota Twins in 11 innings on Friday night before an announced crowd of 21,703 at the Oakland Coliseum. Kevin Kouzmanoff and Rajai Davis both homered for the A's to raise the team's total for June to nine, but Braden gave up four earned runs in 61/3 innings to remain 0-3 since he retired 27 straight Tampa Bay Rays on May 9. And one day after he pitched the final two innings against Boston, closer Andrew Bailey came on in the 11th inning and gave up a double to Justin Morneau and an RBI single to Delmon Young as the A's opened their seven-game homestand on a sour note. Before Friday, the A's had scored a combined four runs in Braden's last four starts. "Dallas always keeps us in games. That's who he is and that's what he does," Bailey said. "The offense will turn around for him, I'm sure." Braden allowed a two-run homer to Morneau in the top of the first inning but was more upset by Young's RBI double in the sixth that gave the Twins a 4-1 lead.
