The Wildcats have won 2,498 games in school history, seventh- most among all Division I schools ever. Located in Tucson, Ariz., the climate is perfect for baseball throughout the winter and spring seasons. Tucson is a baseball community, as it also served as the home to AAA affiliates every year from 1969-2008. Exposure to professional baseball scouts and personnel is at a premium as the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies all call Tucson their Spring Training home. The Cactus League has another nine Major League franchises that visit the state and Tucson in February and March. Since 1965, Arizona has had 206 players drafted by Major League Baseball teams, of which 159 have signed contracts and have gone on to play professionally. Arizona has produced 64 major leaguers in its history, including current stars Trevor Hoffman of the Brewers, Brian Anderson of the White Sox and Nick Hundley of Padres, Trevor Crowe of the Indians and Ryan Perry of the Tigers. Recent Wildcats Daniel Schlereth, Brad Mills and Mark Melancon also made their debuts in 2009. 67 All-America teams have named 82 Wildcat players either first-, second-, or third-team honorees. A total of 66 Arizona players have been named first-team All- Pac-10 Players since 1979. 12 were named All-Pac-10 two or more times. Five Wildcats have been named Pac-10 Player/Pitcher of the Year, including 2005 honoree Trevor Crowe and 2007 honoree Preston Guilmet. In 1980, future Major Leaguer Terry Francona was named the Golden Spikes winner as the top collegiate baseball player. Alan Zinter and Trevor Crowe have both been named finalists for the award. arizona BaSeBall 102 Coach Lopez is one of only 11 active coaches to have won a National Championship in Omaha. After leading Arizona to Omaha in 2004, Coach Lopez is an elite group of three coaches that have taken three schools to the College World Series in the all-time history of Division I baseball. Coach Lopez is a two-time National Coach of the Year (1992 and 1996) and an eight- time Conference Coach of the Year In 25 seasons as a head coach he has won 969 games and has a winning percentage of .614. His teams have won 447 games in their respective conferences and have captured conference titles eight times. Since 1987, Lopez coached teams have averaged 38 wins a season and he has won 40 or more games in a season 10 times. His top-ranked 1996 College World Series team at Florida were victorious a school record 50 times that season, while 2007-08 Arizona teams won 40 games in back-to-back seasons, the first time the school accomplished the feat in over 20 years. There are currently 12 former Andy Lopez coached players in the Major Leagues. Mark Ellis, David Eckstein , Josh Fogg, David Ross, Matt Wise, Brad Wilkerson, Ryan Raburn, Brian Anderson, Nick Hundley, Ryan Perry and Trevor Crowe. A handful of other players have reached the major leagues, including Paul Rigdon, Mark Kiger, John Meloan and Daniel Schlereth. Since 1987, Coach Lopez has recruited and coached 75 players that have gone on to be drafted in the Major League Amateur Baseball Draft, including seven first round selections (two in 2008). Of the 71 players selected, 43 weren’t even drafted out high school or junior college, while 24 other players improved their draft status after playing under his guide. Including the draftees, a total of 105 players coached by Lopez have signed professional baseball contracts. Coach Lopez has led 32 players to All-America honors, 24 to all-region awards and 65 players to all-conference recognition. Over the last 18 seasons, Lopez-coached teams have appeared in the College World Series an average of nearly once every four years. In doing so, nearly every player that plays under coach Lopez has the opportunity to play in the College World series during his career. 103 2010 Media Guide 2009 ALL- AMERICAN Pac-10 ALL-ACADEMIC ALL-Pac-10 Players DRAFTED Dillon Baird Daniel Butler Dillon Baird *Jason Stoffel, 4th Jett Bandy (Fr.) Hale, the New York Mets’ third base and infield coach the past two seasons, replaces Joel Skinner, whose contract was not renewed. A San Jose, Calif. native who attended Campolindo High School in Moraga, Hale previously served under Melvin as third base and infield coach with the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2007-09. During that stint, he played a prominent role on Arizona’s 2007 club which posted a 90-72 record and captured the National League West Division championship. A former Major League player, William (Chip) Hale III enjoyed seven seasons as a minor league manager in the Arizona organization before joining Melvin. He steered the Triple-A Tucson Sidewinders to the Pacific Coast League and Triple-A titles in 2006 with a franchise- record 91-53 mark. His 220 wins and .542 winning percentage as Tucson’s manager from 2004-06 is also a franchise all- time record. He led Rookie-League Missoula to the Pioneer League’s best overall mark (44-32) in 2000 and to the Northern Division’s second-half championship in 2001. Hale was named the Pioneer League and Baseball America’s Rookie-Level Manager of the Year in 2001.

San Diego is still looking for a replacement for hitting coach Alan Zinter, who was let go in September. Meanwhile, infielders coach Ramon Vazquez will not return either, leaving one further vacancy on manager Andy Green's staff. The news means bench coach Mark McGwire, pitching coach Darren Balsley, third-base coach Glenn Hoffman and first-base coach Johnny Washington are all expected to return next season, though the club has not formally announced as much. Vazquez, who played three seasons for the Padres as an infielder from 2002-04, spent one season on Green's staff. Meanwhile, the Padres' search for a hitting coach continues. The club already has interviewed five candidates -- including Red Sox hitting coach Chili Davis on Wednesday. No decision has been made yet, but a Padres source noted it's a near certainty that the club's choice will come from that pool of five candidates. 2 Tatis Jr. among prospects in winter leagues By William Boor / MLB.com | October 19th, 2017 The playoffs and Arizona Fall League may garner the bulk of the attention this time of year, but there's plenty of baseball being played elsewhere.

  • Bullpen Falters After Pitch Count Chases Kluber by Jason
Bullpen falters after pitch count chases Kluber By Jason Beck and William Kosileski / MLB.com | 12:18 AM ET + 6 COMMENTS CLEVELAND -- Michael Fulmer won't pitch in the Midsummer Classic, but he'll settle for winning a duel opposite fellow American League All- Star Corey Kluber. Fulmer's six-plus quality innings and Justin Wilson's five-out save helped the Tigers close out the first half by avoiding a series sweep to the Indians with a 5-3 win Sunday night at Progressive Field. Cleveland heads into the All-Star break at 47-40, up 2 1/2 games on the Twins in the AL Central. Detroit moved within eight games but still has work to do at 39-48 as general manager Al Avila listens to offers ahead of the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline. Kluber and Fulmer (9-6) both allowed a run on three hits over their first five innings. But while Fulmer did it in just 58 pitches, Kluber threw 101, thanks in part to eight strikeouts. Detroit scored three runs in the sixth off the Tribe bullpen, two on Alex Presley's go-ahead double, to move ahead for good. Fulmer entered the seventh with a 5-1 lead and a pitch count of only 71, but four straight hits, including Jose Ramirez's two-run homer, knocked Fulmer out of the game before an out was recorded. Shane Greene retired three straight to escape the jam, then turned the ball over to Wilson, who stranded the bases loaded in the eighth and worked around a single in the ninth for his 10th save.
