  • Setting Metsovo the Navel of Touristic Development of Pindos
Setting Metsovo the navel of touristic development of Pindos T.D. Papazissis, Civil Engineer N.T.U.A. Abstract Metsovo is the seat of the sole municipality of Metsovo county. After the implementation of the Kapodistrias plan, the municipality of Metsovo is composed from Metsovo and the former communities of Anilio, Anthohori and Votonosi and its population is, according to the 2001 census, 4492 people. Its size is 177,676,000 m2-. From the rest of the settlements of the county of Metsovo, Milia has remained a commu- nity seat while Ampelia, Analipsi, Mili, Xiriko, Siolades and Chrissovitsa have been allocated to the municipality of Egnatia. The municipality of Metsovo borders οn the North the community of Perivoli and the municipality of Gorgiani of the district of Grevena of the Grevena prefecture. On the North- East it borders the community of Milia, on the East the municipality of Malakassi of the dis- trict of Kalabaka of the Trikala prefecture and on the West the municipalities of Egnatia and East Zagori of the district of Dodoni of the Ioannina prefecture. Two large Greek rivers spring from Metsovo, Metsovitikos, a side-river of Arahthos, and Aoos, while the flow of Pinios towards Thessalia originates in the col of Katara. The geographical position of Metsovo just described, makes access to the three famous byzantine and post-byzantine open-air museums, but also to the three important sites of the religious and spiritual upheaving of our country, Meteora in Thessalia (which are just 75 km. away), Kastoria in Macedonia (122 km) and the island of the Lake of Ioannina (60 km), very easy.

Tel: +302461068296, Fax : +302461039682, email:[email protected] ABSTRACT: Animal wastes constitute a high proportion of biomass in the region of Western Macedonia, Greece, and are able to play an important role towards the satisfaction of heat and/or energy and related material supply, with respect to environmental protection targets. Significantly, such wastes could be a significant source of energy if conventional energy prices continue to rise. This paper describes anaerobic digestion as a potential animal waste exploitation method. The aim of the present work is to strengthen the interest in animal waste potential for energy production in the region, through a methodology for the feasibility of utilization of those kinds of wastes as renewable energy resources. A combination of technical, economic and environmental issues is presented here. This study estimates the economically recoverable energy potentially available from livestock and poultry wastes in the region of Western Macedonia, Greece for the base year 2000. Anaerobic digestion of dairy cow, fed beef, goat, sheep and laying hen manures could have produced approximately 129,084 m3/d or 47x106 3 6 m /year of biogas, containing approximately 61.5 x 10 KWh/year that could result at a reduction in CO2 of over 80 x 103 tonnes per year and significant economic savings.

  • The War of Numbers and Its First Victim: the Aromanians in Macedonia (End of 19Th – Beginning of 20Th Century)
УДК 94(497.7: =135.1) "18/19" The War of Numbers and its First Victim: The Aromanians in Macedonia (End of 19th – Beginning of 20th century) Nikola MINOV Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, Faculty of Philisophy Skopje, Macedonia Our long-time responsibility has been to count ourselves, to know how many of us there are. N. Batzaria At present, we know that the latest battles for conquering Ottoman Macedonia in 1912/13 were led with heavy artillery and that weapon power had the final say in the allocation of the Ottoman heritage in Europe. Howev- er, the last battle for Macedonia was preceded by a large number of lesser bat- tles in which the churches and schools were on the battlefields, while the we- apons used were the cross and school books. These attempts for spiritual and intellectual conquering of the Christian peoples in Macedonia on the part of their Balkan neighbours were regularly followed by statistical records of the newly found Greeks, Bulgarians, Serbs and Romanians. Ever since the new followers had been registered and, more often than not, after the number of these duly registered followers would have been doubled at least, the “objecti- ve” statistical results would have been presented in public and the statistician “successfully” proved that the largest number of inhabitants in Macedonia had the same nationality as his. The first victim of this war of numbers for the conquering of Mace- donia was one of the small Christian peoples in the country – the Aromani- ans (Vlachs). Insufficiently numerous or compact to be a serious candidate in the battle for the Ottoman heritage, but sufficiently numerous and preva- 154 Nikola MINOV lent throughout Macedonia to enable an excellent negotiating position to tho- se who manage to achieve patronage over them, the Aromanians, as Henry Noel Brailsford penetratingly noted, became the pivot of Macedonian ques- tion.1 Greek statesmen were aware that north of Kastoria (Aromanian: Kus- turea; Macedonian: Kostur) it was only the Aromanians who gave Hellenism a foothold.

  • Proposal for a Cultural Route in the Town of Grevena: "The Stone Bridges of Grevena"
JOURNAL "SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, CULTURE, TRADITIONS".................Volume 1a/2018 PROPOSAL FOR A CULTURAL ROUTE IN THE TOWN OF GREVENA: "THE STONE BRIDGES OF GREVENA" Apostolos Kolovos MSc "Sustainable Development", Harokopio University [email protected] "You see ...we up here from the stone we were born ... With the stone we strolled ... and the stone we claimed ... My son! What was made that time, it cannot be made again now. The old men did their cross and built. They believed there was a saint inside every stone. And they put it on the building site, with a warm heart. Like they were praying .... With fear of the Lord ... ". (G. Lyberopoulos, Mountainous and Frontiers, Athens 1972) Abstract The area of Grevena is located in a very beautiful natural environment with exceptional forests and many waters in rivers and streams. The residents of the area in order to be served with their transportation and cross the rivers and streams safely, they made old bridges. Many of them have been preserved up to date and became monuments of folk culture. They are bridges built with solid materials of the area, with passion and plenty of artistic folk sensitivity. These are the well-known stone bridges of Grevena that were made during the Ottoman domination during the 18th and 19th centuries. The present research proposes the exploitation of these stone bridges through a specific cultural route. The route starts from above, from the springs of the Venetian River, the tributary of Aliakmonas, over which, as well as its tributaries, are situated the most stone arched bridges of Grevena.

One of the most significant development stages of a community is the meeting with the «other», the «stranger». This study examined, through the records of three generations informants, the development and the transformation of the musical – dancing identity of the Vlahs-Armani people of Seli Imathias as a result of the interaction with the musical– dancing tradition of surrounding society. The structural analysis of Seli dances showed that Selian Vlahs kept most of their traditional dance and musical elements although in many cases they adopted elements of the symbiotic groups. This probably led on the development of an ethical code used by the Selian members to communicate each other as well as with the symbiotic groups. Key Words: cultural groups, cultural identity, traditional dancing and music, surrounding society Introduction Identity as a concept has been and still is today a subject of interdisciplinary research. Its definition and delineation is in the center of the scientists’ attention such as psychologists, sociologists and anthropologists.
