Esquivias Assistant National Statistician National Censuses Service ISSN 0117-1453 FOREWORD The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) conducted the 2015 Census of Population (POPCEN 2015) in August 2015 primarily to update the country’s population and its demographic characteristics, such as the size, composition, and geographic distribution. Report No. 3 – Population, Land Area, and Population Density is among the series of publications that present the results of the POPCEN 2015. This publication provides information on the population size, land area, and population density by region, province, highly urbanized city, and city/municipality based on the data from population census conducted by the PSA in the years 2000, 2010, and 2015; and data on land area by city/municipality as of December 2013 that was provided by the Land Management Bureau (LMB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). Also presented in this report is the percent change in the population density over the three census years. The population density shows the relationship of the population to the size of land where the population resides. -

JULY 2019 ISSUE NO. 60 MINDANAO DISPLACEMENT DASHBOARD Maguindanao. Country representative of UNHCR Philippines visited the IDPs in Talitay. @ UNHCR/ Tanghal DISPLACEMENT OVERVIEW DISPLACEMENT IN JULY In July 2019, a total number of 4,348 families (21,740 individuals) were displaced in Mindanao due to natural disaster (1,340 individuals) armed conflict (19,840 individuals), and clan feuds (560 individuals). Out of 21,740 individuals 4,348 displaced throughout the month, 16% (3,410 individuals) have returned to their Families homes by the end of July, leaving 84% (18,330 individuals) still displaced by the end of the reporting period. As of the 31st of July, a total number of 34,011 families (169,017 individuals) are 21,740 currently displaced in Mindanao. Those displaced can be classified into three Individuals main groups, depending on the length of displacement: Group A: 3,666 families (18,330 individuals) remain displaced out of 4,597 CIVILIAN CASUALTIES families displaced within the month; From January to July 2019 Group B: 1,415 families (6,697 individuals) remain displaced, and have been protractedly displaced for more than 30 days but less than 180 days; and 24 Persons dead Group C: 28,930 families (143,990 individuals) remain displaced and have been protractedly displaced for more than 180 days. Those classified under Group C are concentrated in five main areas: 31 Persons injured Zamboanga City: 653 families (3,544 individuals) still displaced due to Zamboanga siege in September 2013. LOCATIONS Lanao del Sur & Lanao del Norte: 26,276 families (131,380 individuals) still Breakdown of displaced individuals by region displaced due to Marawi siege in May 2017. -

Preface Country of Origin Information (COI) is required within Refugee Status Determination (RSD) to provide objective evidence on conditions in refugee producing countries to support decision making. Quality information about human rights, legal provisions, politics, culture, society, religion and healthcare in countries of origin is essential in establishing whether or not a person’s fear of persecution is well founded. CORI Country Reports are designed to aid decision making within RSD. They are not intended to be general reports on human rights conditions. They serve a specific purpose, collating legally relevant information on conditions in countries of origin, pertinent to the assessment of claims for asylum. Categories of COI included within this report are based on the most common issues arising from asylum applications made by nationals from the southern Philippines, specifically Mindanao, Tawi Tawi, Basilan and Sulu. UNCLASSIFIED Jamiat ul-Ansar (JuA) (Also known as: Al-Faran, Al-Hadid, Al-Hadith, Harakat ul-Ansar, Harakat ul-Mujahideen, Harakat ul-Mujahidin, HuA, HuM) The following information is based on publicly available details about Jamiat ul-Ansar (JuA), formerly known as Harakat ul-Mujahideen (HuM), the name that is still commonly used for the group. To the Australian Government’s knowledge, these details are accurate and reliable and have been corroborated by classified information. Basis for listing a terrorist organisation Division 102 of the Criminal Code provides that for an organisation to be listed as a terrorist organisation, the Attorney-General must be satisfied on reasonable grounds that the organisation: (a) is directly or indirectly engaged in, preparing, planning, assisting in or fostering the doing of a terrorist act (whether or not a terrorist act has occurred or will occur); or (b) advocates the doing of a terrorist act (whether or not a terrorist act has occurred or will occur). Details of the organisation Objectives JuA wants to unite all of Kashmir with Pakistan and establish a caliphate based on Sharia law. JuA has advocated the use of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons against India, and opposes efforts to normalise relations between the two countries. JuA also has pledged support for Afghan militants fighting Coalition forces in Afghanistan. Some elements within JuA have wanted to re-focus their activities and bring them more into line with Usama bin Laden’s global jihad against the US and Israel and their allies. Issue 22, January 2018 Philippines: Factors of Century-Old Conϐlict and Current Violent Extremism in the South Primitivo Cabanes RAGANDANG III Abstract. The perpetual struggle for separatism among Moros in Mindanao is produced on a back- ground of historical and cultural injustices and by the presence of Moro liberation fronts, along with the government responses to this issue. This article endeavors to trace and interweave the roots of historical and cultural factors of Muslim separatism in Mindanao, along with its implication to the present Marawi crisis as fueled by the ISIS-linked groups who attacked the Philippines’ Islamic city on May 23, 2017. It looks into the history of the arrival of Islam and the subsequent islamization of Mindanao. It then discusses the Muslim resistance movement against two foreign regimes, Spanish and American, which is followed by its resistance against the Philippine government. Factors that trigger Muslims’ desire for separatism include at least three notorious massacres: Jabidah, Manili, and the Tacub Massacre. Such historical factors of injustices have fuelled the century-old struggle for separatism and self-determination. With the government’s and non-government forces’ failure to pacify the island, such struggle resulted into continuing war in the region killing over 120,000 Mindanaoans. Recently, this conlict in the region was reignited when an ISIS-linked group attacked the Philippines’ Islamic city of Marawi, affecting over 84,000 internally displaced persons from over 18,000 families who are now seeking refuge in 70 different evacuation centers, in a state of discomfort, missing home and psychologically distress.
