Sanskar Gurukul Weekly Update

Class Name: Bhrigu Week# 28: May 4, 2014

General Assembly We started with Shanti mantra in the main hall .

We recited gurustotram and practiced meditation.

Class We started the class with three Omkars followed by the Shanthi Mantra . This week, as part of ‘Discover ’ series, we continued our journey through various regions and learned about ‘States and Landmarks’. We traveled through , Central India, and Southern India.

This was discussion oriented multi-media presentation. All the kids participated in recognizing various historic and current landmarks / landscapes and places they already visited.

Following landmarks were visited during this session:

Delhi: Capital of India. Second most populous city in World.

Qutab Minar: Tallest tower in India (73 meters). Construction started in 1192 by Qutabudddin Ainak and completed by his successors. The minar was used as watch tower.

Jantar Mantar : Sundials used for astronomical calculations. Primary purpose of the observatory was to compile astronomical tables and to predict astronomical movements of Sun, Moon and planets. Maharaja Jai Singh II of constructed 5 Jantar Mantars in total – Delhi, Jaipur, Ujjain, and .

Red Fort: Residence of Mughal emperors for 200 years. Every year on 15 th August, the prime minister of India hoists the national flag at Red Fort and delivers speech to the nation. Sound and light show in the evening which describes mughal history is an attraction for the tourists.

India Gate : Unveiled : 1933 . INDIA GATE mainly a memorial to the Unknown Soldier. 70,000 indian soldiers lost their lives during WW1. Burning as a shrine under the arch of India Gate since January 26, 1971 is the "Amar Jawan Jyoti" (the flame of the immortal warrior), which marks the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The republic day parade starts from Rashatrapati Bhavan and passes through India Gate.

Akshardham Temple : World’s largest comprehensive . This Swami Narayan temple was officially opened on Nov 6, 2005 and sits near the banks of Yamuna.

Lotus Temple: Bahai house of worship completed in 1986. This temple has won

numerous architectural awards. The temple is open to all regardless of religion or any other distinction. Most visited building in the world (surpassed Taj Mahal with 4.5 million visitors per year).

Central India:

Khajuraho Temples: Located in . Total of 85 temples but only 22 survive today.

Gwalior Fort: One of the most unconquerable . It has been held by Tomars, Mughals, Marathas and British.

Sanchi Stupa: Located near in MP. It is well accepted that the structures of Stupa are the most organized construction, which went into the engineering of temples in the mediaeval period.

Western India:

Gateway of India: Located on the waterfront in South . Built to commemorate visit of King George V and Queen Mary.

Churches and Beaches of Goa: S mallest but richest State in India. Got freedom from Portuguese in 1961

Sabarmati Ashram: Located in the Sabarmati suburb of in on the banks of river Sabarmati. One of the residences of Mahatma Gandhi.

Southern India:

Charminar: Built in 1591 on the east bank of Musi river. Built to commemorate eradication of Plague by Muhammad Quli Qtub Shah.

Mysore Palace: Official residence of Wodeyar – royal family of Mysore.

Hampi: Village in Northern Karnataka state, located within the ruins of Vijaynagara, the former capital of Vijaynagar empire. Situated on the banks of river Tungbhadra.

Kanyakumari: Southernmost tip of mainland India.
