These teams are made up of children from grades 6-12 and are used as a mentoring program for their members.     Sermon for Homecoming 2020 Exodus 14:19-31 Rev. Shannon A White Wilton Presbyterian Church September 13, 2020 Have you ever been lost? It’s a disorienting feeling, isn’t it? I remember two instances… the first, I was with my family when my daughter was young. We were walking on a path in a state park in CT where had been were camping for the weekend. I was in front, and I realized at some point we must have turned the wrong way somewhere along the trailway. As I noticed the sun beginning to go down a bit, I was frantic that we wouldn’t find the right trail to get us back to our camp site before it was dark. The other time I remember pricked much more at my sense of pride. I was, once again hiking, although this was a 10-day trek in the High Sierras in California. It was part of a course pre-seminary with 15 other seminarians and 2 guides designed for inner personal and spiritual growth and community building. Each of the students was given a day to lead the group – only utilizing the help of a typographical map. I had only some experience using this type of map and was very unsure of my abilities to get us from point A to point B in the allotted time. In addition, each of us were carrying 50-pound packs on our backs… so the weight of making a wrong decision and taking us up a steep ridge, only to find that we had gone the wrong way, literally had major implications for the group.

    Homecoming Sermon Throughout the 18th chapter of the gospel according to Matthew and in the five verses we heard today, in particular, Jesus reminds us of the essential nature of Christian community. For us, the timing could not be better. This morning we greet each other in the crisp fall air – to give thanks and to ask God’s blessing in the days ahead, to offer ourselves again to each other and to new ministries, and to share in a meal together after worship. This is a morning for coming home. For quieting the restlessness and doubt that creep in while we are away from each other and for honoring the ways we help each other recognize and remember that God is among us. When we are faced with turmoil of any kind, and at times – like this – when there is so much violence and violent rhetoric in the public square, on top of natural disasters, on top of personal struggles and separations and disappointments – that promise might be the only thing we can say with certainty. But, it is a certainty. Every time two or more of us are together in Christ’s name, Christ is there. All through the pages of Scripture, there is this great theme of longing for salvation, of longing for our home in God, the recovery of something which has been lost: a nostalgia for a lost love, or a lost paradise. This sense of loss, of alienation, is wonderfully and classically expressed in the poetry of the first chapters of the Book of Genesis.

With homecoming brings various other traditions from hall decorating to an assembly. For weeks before homecoming, festivities begin; students spend time after school hard at work in prep- aration. Every year, each grade picks a theme and is assigned a hallway. Students make decorations corre- sponding to their theme to decorate the hallway. The decorations hang during Spirit Week. Then, the hallways are judged, and the winning hallway is announced at the homecoming football game. Soon after hall decorating begins, eligibility lists for Spirit King and Queen are hung. Seniors crowd around the lists to see which of their peers qualify. Then, Inside this issue: they vote to determine the Spirit King candidates and Homecoming Court. After- wards, the fun opens up to the entire school. Each Spirit King candidate selects a Queens 2 charity, and students begin the war. Penny war, that is. Students decide the winning Spirit King in a money battle. The money goes to the winner’s charity. The winner is Kings 5 announced at the homecoming assembly. Now, one may wonder where Homecoming Court stands in all of the commotion.
