The 3rd Annual Cancer Treatment Centers of America Tennis Championships, presented by Sanderson Volvo kicked off Wednesday, October 20. The 5-day event features tennis greats John McEnroe, Michael Chang, Jim Courier, Wayne Ferreira, Mark Philippoussis, Jimmy Arias, Aaron Krickstein and Jeff Tarango. Enjoy mixed doubles on Saturday with Anna Kournikova and Ashley Harkleroad. Tournament Match Schedule: Session 1 Wednesday, Oct 20 7pm Match A: Philippoussis vs. Krickstein Match B: Courier vs. Tarango Session 2 Thursday, Oct 21 7pm Match A: Chang vs. Arias Match B: McEnroe vs. Ferreira Session 3 Friday, Oct 22 2pm Match A: Philippoussis vs. Arias Match B: Chang vs. Krickstein Session 4 Friday, Oct 22 7pm Match A: Courier vs. Ferreira Match B: McEnroe vs. Tarango Session 5 Saturday, Oct 23 Noon Match A: Arias vs. Krickstein Match B: Kournikova & Tarango vs. Harkleroad & Ferreira Match C: Chang vs. Philippoussis Session 6 Saturday, Oct 23 6pm Match A: Courier vs. McEnroe Mixed Doubles: Kournikova & Arias vs. Harkleroad & Krickstein Match B: Ferreira vs. Tarango Session 7 Sunday, Oct 24 Noon 3rd Place Match Championship Match Mayor & Council -2- October 22, 2010 Along with the CTCA Tennis Championships, The City of Surprise will host the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Junior Team Tennis Nationals at the Tennis and Racquet Complex. The National Championships serve as the crown jewel of USTA Junior Team Tennis as the nation’s top teams compete for the title. The National Championship will take place over 2 weekends in October (October 22-24, 29-31, 2010 and October 21-23, 29-31, 2011) and consist of two age divisions; 14 and under and 18 and under in both intermediate and advanced play. Over 500 athletes will participate in each of the 4 divisions. WAY-FINDING SIGNS. The Transportation/Engineering Division of the Public Works Department installed the Way Finding Signs on October 19. These signs are intended to provide motorist guidance and direction to the Surprise Civic Center and Recreation Campus areas and guide them to the specific attraction within those two areas. Staff fabricated and installed these signs completely in house. Material cost was $4,200, below the originally estimated $6,000. All the older signage has been removed and stored. Shown below is a sample photo of an internal way-finding sign. If you have any questions, please contact City Engineer, Nick Mascia at 623-222-6140. SURPRISE STADIUM. The Arizona Fall League Surprise Rafters games are taking place in the stadium. The season’s first night game is scheduled for Thursday, October 21 at 6:35 pm. Ticket costs are $5 and $6 and can be purchased at the stadium ticket office one hour before the start of the game. Mayor & Council -3- October 22, 2010 Community & Recreation Services is hosting the annual Men’s Senior League Baseball World Series games. Over 300 teams from all over the country will participate in three games throughout the Phoenix area over the next 3 weeks. Seventy-two of the games will be played in Surprise on the Kansas City Royals practice fields. Games are free to the public. WEST VALLEY REGION AND SKYLINE REGION SWIMMING AND DIVING INVITATIONAL OCTOBER 21ST – 23RD. Dysart and Shadow Ridge High Schools will host Regional Swimming and Dive meets this Thursday through Saturday at the Surprise Aquatic Center. Diving will be held on Thursday with warm ups beginning at 10 am and competition beginning at 11:30 am. The swimming prelims begin Friday morning @ 7:15 am for warm ups and competition begins at 9 am. Schools in the Skyline region include Liberty, Desert Edge, Buckeye, Sierra Linda, Verrado, Mingus, Youngker, and Shadow Ridge. All will compete in the swim in finals on Saturday with competition beginning at 11:30 am. POLICE DEPARTMENT MONTHLY REVIEW. The monthly review for September, 2010 is attached as EXHIBIT A. ADA COORDINATOR. Joe Gladieux is attending the National ADA Coordinator’s Conference in San Diego this week. He has reported that staff from the Department of Justice has mentioned Surprise as a “Model City” in its efforts to make this a barrier free community. THANKSGIVING WEEK. Due to the shortened week, there will be no Council Update meetings on Monday and no Issues Report on Friday. These would be of a serious nature or have a degree of immediate personal danger or harm. This includes business and residential hold up and panic alarms. Priority 2 calls are those in which a crime in progress might result in a threat of injury to a person, or major loss of property or immediate apprehension of a suspect. These calls are urgent but not known to be life threatening. This includes traffic accidents with injuries, traffic accidents blocking a roadway, residential panic alarms, business audible hold-up/panic alarms and business silent burglar alarms. Priority 3 calls are non-emergency requests for service to report a crime after the fact. This includes audible residential and business burglar alarms and silent residential burglary alarms. Rubin, from Long Island, NY, joins fellow American teen Taylor Fritz and former world No. 5 Juan Martin del Potro in securing the DBO's three wild cards. Rubin played in the Delray Beach qualifying tournament a year ago, reaching the second round. The 19-year-old Rubin scored his biggest career win in January, beating world No. 18 Benoit Paire in the first round of the Australian Open.
