3RD ANNUAL CANCER TREATMENT CENTERS OF AMERICA CHAMPIONSHIPS. The 3rd Annual Cancer Treatment Centers of America Tennis Championships, presented by Sanderson Volvo kicks off Wednesday, October 20 at 7pm. Mayor & Council -2- October 15, 2010 NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR SURPRISE The Communications Department’s Surprise 11 placed in the top ranks of a nationwide video competition recognizing community outreach. The documentary production, “Surprise: a History in Progress,” placed second nationally at the annual awards competition of the National Association of Broadcast Officers and Administrators in Washington, DC. The City placed third nationally for its promotion of the CTCA Tennis Championship, the public safety program “Dispatch,” which features the activities of the Surprise Police and Fire Departments, and for a public service announcement promoting back to school safety. Honorable mentions were achieved for “Excellence in Government Programming” and the Surprise 11 website. This year’s competition featured more than 730 entries. No other Arizona city earned higher than an honorable mention.

JERZEE BOYZ DANCE PARTY – ACTIVE ADULT EVENT. Staff is expecting 75 people to attend this exclusive event for 50+, on Saturday, October 16th, from 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm at the Sierra Montana Recreation Center, located at 14861 N. Spring Lane. This event, which is presented by the City of Surprise Community and Recreation Services Department Senior Services Division, will feature dancing to the music of your favorite New Jersey performers like Sinatra, Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen and the Four Seasons. Also included in the ticket price are refreshments and prizes for trivia and name that tune contests. Tickets are $9 per person and are available at Surprise Senior Center, 15832 N. Hollyhock St. or the Community & Recreation Services Offices at 15960 N Bullard Ave. Tickets will also be available at the door until sell out.

FAMILY CAMPOUT AT WHITE TANKS. Almost 40 people will learn camping basics in the White Tank Mountains over the upcoming weekend. Other activities include a hike, scorpion hunt, campfire storytelling and s’mores. Dinner and a light breakfast are included. There will also be a special visit from a singing cowboy who will entertain participants with classic country songs while on horseback.

SURPRISE TWITTER "FOLLOWERS" REACHES 450 The Communications Department reports an increase of more than 30 new Twitter followers in the past two weeks following introduction of more aggressive "Twitter max" techniques. The total number of residents, businesses, and media following Surprise on Twitter has now reached 450. Communications is working with/encouraging other city departments to create micro blog Twitter accounts.

SURPRISE STADIUM. Games have begun at the stadium for the 2010 Surprise Rafters 6th Fall League Season at the Surprise Recreation Campus. This year’s Rafters team consists of players from the Rangers, Royals, Tigers, Brewers and Cardinals. Ticket costs are $5 and $6 and can be purchased at the stadium ticket office one hour before the start of the game.

The Stadium will be hosting the 7th Annual Arizona Special Olympics Fall Games opening ceremonies. Activities for the 1,100 athletes include a parade of athletes, dinner and dancing.

AQUATICS. The Surprise Aquatic Center will host the swimming competition this Friday and Saturday. Several hundred participants and spectators are expected to attend the event.

ADAPTIVE RECREATION. The Surprise Special Olympics Bocce Ball Team participated in the West Valley competition on October 6th. Ten athletes represented the City of Surprise in preparation for the state competition being held this upcoming weekend. Two teams received gold medals, one brought home silver and two received a bronze.

TEEN ADVISORY BOARD. The Teen Advisory Board met on Wednesday, October 13. They selected Nick Haney as Chair, Ysabella Salazar as Vice Chair and Skyler Heck as Secretary.
