Others would say framing a genre through the lens of one band is just Guitar Shred stupid. But that's not stopping the makers of Metal Machine Music: Nine Inch Nails MUSIC DVD REVIEWS: The Who - Live At The Isle and the Industrial Uprising , which tries to accomplish both at once. The film begins Of Wight Festival 1970 with a brief but informative history of industrial music from its '70s art-rock beginnings DVD REVIEWS: The Boy in the Striped Pajamas up through its fusion with dance and metal cultures in the '80s. Heavy emphasis is Dir. by Mark Herman rightfully placed on Throbbing Gristle, whose singer (Genesis P-Orridge) is included in DVD REVIEWS: Christopher Titus: Love is Evol the film's small number of interview subjects, and Ministry, whose Al Jourgensen is DVD REVIEWS: Legally Blondes - Dir. by Savage not. Focus quickly shifts however to Nine Inch Nails, who as far as the filmmakers are Steve Holland concerned, are the be all and end all of the genre — save a brief mention of '90s DVD REVIEWS: Sugarhouse - Dir. by Gary Love NIN-aping acts Stabbing Westward and Filter, the history of industrial music stops DVD REVIEWS: The Girls Next Door: Season Four with them. It should come as a shock to no one with even a modicum of knowledge DVD REVIEWS: Happy-Go-Lucky - Dir. by Mike about Nine Inch Nails that Trent Reznor didn't authorize this doc; he being a notorious Leigh control freak. So immediately we're denied any sort of definitive account of Nine Inch DVD REVIEWS: South Park: The Complete Nails' rise to stardom since the main dude involved is conspicuously absent. The Twelfth Season filmmakers manage to dig up former band-mates Chris Vrenna and Richard Patrick, DVD REVIEWS: Nobel Son - Dir. by Randall Miller who offer the only first-hand accounts in the film. The rest of the critical analysis is DVD REVIEWS: Chrysalis - Dir. by Julien Leclercq given by music media types, including Toronto's own Alan Cross. An extended DVD REVIEWS: Screamers: The Hunting - Dir. by interview with Genesis P-Orridge is included in the package, as are a handful of other Sheldon Wilson extended interviews. But save for a rental out of curiosity, this one's better left alone FILM REVIEWS: Crossing Over - Dir. by Wayne until Reznor decides on his own legacy. The two-disc limited edition set, titled U2: The Best Of 1980-1990, will include one CD containing 13 hits from those years, plus a new re-recording of Joshua Tree outtake "Sweetest Thing," and asecond CD of 15 B-sides and rarities. On November 10, Island will release the hits CD separately. Both releases will be preceded by the release of "Sweetest Thing" to radio on September 29. The band's albums released during those years, all on Island, are 1980's Boy, 1981's October, 1983's War and the live album Under A Blood Red Sky, 1984's The Unforgettable Fire, the 1985 live EP Wide Awake In America, 1987's The Joshua Tree and 1988's Rattle And Hum. The most infernal atmosphere and beats were packed on Disco Rigido (1989), the debut album by Die Warzau (1). Chicago also benefited by the work of former Killing Joke's drummer Martin Atkins, whose supergroup Pigface (1) interpreted industrial music as a producer's product, not unlike the producer of hip-hop: rhythm and noise form the foundation for a slew of guest vocalists such as Chris Connelly, Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), Nivek Ogre (Skinny Puppy), Mary Byker (Gaye Bykers On Acid) and En Esch (KMFDM) to deliver shocking lyrics on albums such as Fook (1992). From this fertile soil Trent Reznor's Nine Inch Nails (12) were born, and the fate of industrial music changed dramatically. Reznor created a persona that was a cross of Dostoevsky's "demons", Goethe's Werther, Nietzsche's "ueber-mensch", and De Sade's perverts.
