March 3-6, 2016 Purse: $9,500,000 Trump National Doral-Blue Monster Par/Yards: 72/7,543 Final-Round Notes – Sunday, March 06, 2016 Weather Sunday: Mostly sunny skies with a high in the low 80s. Northerly winds increased to 15-25 mph in the afternoon. Final Leaderboard 1 Adam Scott 68-66-73-69—276 (-12) 2 Bubba Watson 69-69-71-68—277 (-11) T3 Danny Willett 68-69-72-69—278 (-10) T3 Rory McIlroy 71-65-68-74—278 (-10) 5 Phil Mickelson 67-72-70-70—279 (-9) 6 Jimmy Walker 69-72-73-66—280 (-8) Winner Stats After nine holes of the final round, four players, Bubba Watson, Danny Willett, Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy, made the turn tied for the lead at 10-under and a back-nine shootout looked likely. It was Adam Scott, who made the turn at 8-under, who came from behind after starting the day three strokes behind Rory McIlroy. Scott began with a birdie on the opening hole before a pair of double bogeys at Nos. 3 and 5 halted his challenge. Scott then played the last 13 holes in 6-under par. After driving behind a tree on the final hole, Scott bravely tried to cut his second shot around the tree and over the water. His ball came to rest on the grassy bank inside the water hazard left of the green. Scott chipped to 6’ 8” below the hole and made the putt to win in back-to-back weeks on the PGA TOUR.

Commercial Bank Qatar Masters Doha GC Doha, Qatar 21 Jan 2015 24 Jan 2015 SPANIARDS SAMPLE LOCAL CULTURE IN DOHA Friday, 23 January 2015 Pablo Larrazabal (left), Ali Fakhri and Rafa CabreraBello are schooled in the art of Arabic calligraphy during the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters at Doha Golf Club () Spanish stars Rafa CabreraBello and Pablo Larrazábal sampled a little local culture when they received a lesson in Arabic calligraphy after the second round of the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters. “It’s fun to try things like this,” said CabreraBello, who has twice finished third at Doha Golf Club, including last year when he missed out on the playoff by a single stroke. As Sergio Garcia continued a solid defence of his title with a second round of 69 and compatriot Alejandro Cañizares remained in the top ten courtesy of a 70, CabreraBello explained why he and many other Spaniards enjoy the US$2.5 million tournament, which sits at the heart of The European Tour’s desert swing. “It’s just being like back home,” said CabreraBello, a twotime European Tour winner, including the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. “There’s normally sunshine, it’s a little breezy, we play in short sleeves and I like the fact that there’s sand all around.” CabreraBello considers the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters one of his favourite tournaments, and said he has always felt comfortable on Doha Golf Club’s Peter Harradinedesigned layout. “I think it’s a long hitter’s course,” he said.

  • Chapter 8 Golf Events
8 Golf Events Spotlight: The draw of Tiger Woods Tiger Woods after winning the Dubai Desert Classic 2008, courtesy of Tiger Woods Dubai LLC If anyone doubted the financial and ratings value of Tiger Woods’ presence at a tournament, then the slump in viewer numbers and consequent adver- tising revenue during his forced absence for seven months over 2008/09 proved his unique worth. Ratings fell for TV golf broadcasts and audiences dropped away until his return in February 2009. Woods had a quicker impact on any sport than any other sporting figure. Following three consecutive US Amateur Golf titles in 1996, he joined the professional PGA Tour. He won his first pro tournament in 1996 just five weeks after joining the tour and won another two weeks later. After being named 1996 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year and Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year, he went on to win four events in 1997 and by 1998 was ranked top golfer on the world golf rankings list. His dramatic success triggered a surge in TV audience numbers. Audiences increased by nearly 14 per cent for weekend golf telecasts in 1997 and CBS recorded increases of nearly 25 per cent. Sunday ratings for CBS’s 1997 Masters Tournament were up 55 per cent from the previous year, broadcasting to an esti- mated 40 million viewers. The increase in both viewership and mass appeal of golf was exploited immedi- ately by advertisers and sponsors. Both Nike and Titleist signed Woods to en- dorsement contracts in 1996, followed by American Express and Rolex.
