The Manager Has His Say !

Good afternoon and welcome back to Kings Head Meadow, We are back at home trying to build on the unbeaten run we are on, unfortunately we only came away with a point from Easton last Saturday, on a day that I feel we dominated for large periods of the game and we did everything but put the ball in the back of the net! Another day it could have been 4-0 but it wasn’t meant to be, A positive going into today is that we kept a clean sheet and made chance after chance to win the game, it’s when your not creating that I would start worrying so hopefully we can put that right today against Stalham. We know it’s another tough test but with the right application and work rate and a little more quality in front of goal we know we’re more than capable of turning anyone over. Thank you for coming along and hope you return again in the near future. Enjoy the game, Aaron Kay (Joint Manager) DAVID MORTER Est1993 Low Road, Morley, NR18 9PW

It comes at the end of a damning week for the film industry with the launch of the forthcoming James Bond film No Time To Die being put back to 2021. Sadly, it’s an all-too familiar story in these strange Covid times, bearing a striking comparison to the football industry, which too has been left to pick up the pieces from the effects of the global pandemic. So, the question remains then Boris, if you are pleading with people to go back to watching films in the cinema - a small, enclosed arena with very little room for manoeuvre or ventilation – then why can’t fans return to football in a much larger, outdoor, socially-distanced environment? Last Saturday, 15 Vue Cinemas – Cineworld’s main market rival – showed live matches, well attended by fans. How can you watch football in a cinema but not an open-air stadium? That’s madness. Quite frankly, I’m amazed – and mightily relieved - that more proud, well-established football clubs haven’t fallen foul to these testing Covid times and credit for that lies with the people who work tirelessly – usually without financial reward – to keep our clubs alive. But, with a second Coronavirus wave threatening to kick in and tougher restrictions gradually being put in place, there comes a point when something has to give, as Cineworld have shown. Last week’s £10m Government bailout to the National League at least papers over the cracks for a few months but, at the time of writing this, clubs are still waiting for news of their reimbursements almost a week on and with their season already underway. Indeed, poor communication throughout has been a huge issue during this uncertain summer and that’s something that needs to be addressed in any future Covid post mortem. Personally, I’m still dismayed by a lack of assistance, and greed sometimes, of the mega-rich Premier League and its member clubs during this crisis. No fewer than six players in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for this week’s friendly with Wales and Nations League games against Belgium and Denmark boast a Non-League background. Doesn’t that show that football at this level is impacting higher up the Pyramid? In the week when Macclesfield Town were wound up by the High Court for debts totalling £500,000, Chelsea were spending £22 million for a replacement goalkeeper. Born On This Very Day

Wayne Rooney - 24/10/1985 - Liverpool, England. Player Coach at Derby County. He is the record goalscorer for the England national team (53) and for Manchester United (253). At club level, he has won every top-level trophy available to English teams, with the exception of the UEFA Super Cup. Rooney joined the Everton youth team at the age of 9 and made his professional debut for the club in 2002 at the age of 16. He spent two seasons at the Merseyside club, before moving to Manchester United for £25.6 million in the 2004 summer transfer window. He won 16 trophies with the club, including five Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the Champions League in 2008. Rooney made his senior international debut for England in February 2003 aged 17, he became the youngest player to represent England and he is England's youngest ever goalscorer. He has won the England Player of the Year award four times, in 2008, 2009, 2014, and 2015. He represented England on 120 occasions. John Ruddy - 24/10/1986 - St Ives, England. Currently at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Ruddy began his career at Cambridge United, before signing for Everton as a 19-year-old. In five years with Everton, he made one appearance. Ruddy then signed for Norwich City in 2010 and, in his first season, was part of the team that gained promotion to the Premier League. The following year, Norwich finished twelfth, and Ruddy was selected by new England manager Roy Hodgson for the squad for Euro 2012. However, he was ruled out after breaking his finger during training. He made his debut in a 2–1 win against Italy in August 2012. He suffered a long term thigh injury in November 2012, but returned to help Norwich to an 11th-place finish at the end of the 2012–13 Premier League season. After 243 appearances for Norwich, he moved to Wolves in 2017. îIkay Gűndoğan - 24/10/1990 - Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Currently playing for Manchester City and Germany player. He came through VfL Bochum's youth academy. In 2008, he began playing for the club's reserve side before joining FC Nürnberg the following season. In 2013, he helped them reach their first UEFA Champions League Final since 1996–97. After playing a total of 157 matches and scoring 15 goals for the club, He signed for Manchester City for an estimated transfer fee of £21 million in 2016. He won the Premier League and EFL Cup in 2018 & 2019, as well as the FA Cup in 2019. Gündogan made his senior debut for Germany in 2011. Jack Colback - 24/10/1989 - Newcastle, England. Plays for Newcastle United. He began his career at Sunderland in 2008, having graduated from their academy, and broke into the team following loans at Ipswich Town. After 115 Premier League appearances with Sunderland, his contract expired and he moved Newcastle United. After he was dropped from the 25-strong Premiership squad for the 2017–2018 season, he went on loan to Notts Forest for one and a half seasons. He was called up for the England senior squad for the 1st time in August 2014. The History Of Football Programmes

A series of articles by the author of the book ‘A History and Guide to Football Programmes’ describing how programmes have changed over a century-and-a-half of

Early FA Cup Finals While the most important day in the football calendar has always been the FA Cup Final, for many decades the quality and frequency of its programmes were far behind those issued by clubs. Indeed, it was not until the late 1900’s that the football authorities took some interest in FA Cup Final programmes, having previously stood back while outside publishers “sponsored” matchday issues. A number of 19th century Cup Final programmes were published by “The People” newspaper. Printed locally, these Crystal Palace issues comprised a folded sheet with advertisements on one side, the People being prominent amongst sports outfitters; and team lines and more advertisements on the reverse. They were sold as “The only authorised programme” and so few have survived that they now fetch five figure sums at auction. Some doubts as to the “only authorised” issue status of these programmes have been raised by the existence of another version of a 1901 Cup Final teamsheet. An “Official Programme” for the Tottenham Hotspur v Sheffield United match, in the shape of a 7” x 5” blue card, has survived. This version is devoid of advertisements, and one wonders if it was purely distributed to VIPs, as opposed to being on public sale. The teamsheet for the 1904 “English Cup Tie” between Manchester City and Bolton Wanderers listed the players in two columns, and numbered them (1 to 22), reintroducing the original concept of a match programme - the identification of players by spectators. Curiously, the reverse side displayed the same names, and numbers, in 2-3-5 formation, along with the note: “Any alteration taking place in the Players’ Names, a board will be sent round the Ground corresponding with numbers on card.” It must have been a particularly large board to be seen by everyone in the 61,300 crowd at the old Crystal Palace ground. When Newcastle United played Bradford City at the Crystal Palace in the 1911 Final, W.H. Smith & Sons issued a “Souvenir Card” priced 1d. Colin Veitch of Newcastle United was photographed on the front cover of this large folded sheet, with the team lines (un-numbered, in 2-3-5 formation) on the inside pages along with advertisements for “The Yorkshire Evening Post Football Edition ; containing full report of the Cup Final, will be on sale to-night at King’s Cross, St Pancras, Marylebone and Euston stations on the departure of special trains for the North.” The refusal of to become involved in programme production has not helped in resolving this unofficial/official debate nearly a century later. Similarly, programmes for representative and International fixtures were left to the host club. It was not until the Cup Final moved to Stamford Bridge in 1920 that a single, definitive football programme began to be published for the FA Cup Final. Stalham Town FC is a amateur club in Stalham, Norfolk, which runs two adult men’s teams and a ladies team. The 1st Team, Reserves and Ladies all play at our own purpose built sports ground – RIVERS PARK. We now the club joined the Anglian Combination in 1965/66 finishing runners-up in Division One, In 1984/85 season they won the Division 4 title, in 1988/89 they won the Division 2 title and in 1995/96 season they once again finished runners- up in Division One this time to Loddon United. In 1993/94 they won the Cyril Ballyn Trophy beating Poringland Wanderers 2-0 and the following season they reached the final again this time however they lost 2-0 to North Walsham Town. In 1996/97 they reached the final of the Mummery Cup losing to Madra 2-1. We now move forward to the 2003/04 season when they were competing in the Anglian Combination League Division One where they finished 9th in the table, their Reserves were at that time in Division 4 but unfortunately finished bottom of the table and were relegated. The 2004/05 season saw the 1st team improve their final position by two places to finish 7th whilst the Reserves finished 10th in Division 5. In 2005/06 the 1st team found it tough but managed to end the season well and finished in 10th place with the Reserves going one better finishing in 9th place. In 2006/07 it was touch and go for a while to avoid relegation but they managed to finish in 13th place one point above the dreaded drop, the Reserves were slightly more comfortable finishing in 12th place. The following season saw the 1st team move upto 12th place but well above the relegation places and the Reserves finished in 10th place. Things improved slightly in 2008/09 with the 1st team sitting comfortably in mid-table and the Reserves finishing in 10th spot. Although hopes were high for 2009/10 once again it was a step back for the 1st team, finally finishing in 13th spot but the Reserves had their best season for a while finishing in 5th place. Season 2010/11 saw the 1st team improve and at one point for challenging for one of the promotion places but finally they had to settle for 7th place, with hopes high that the Reserves would continue their good form from the previous season it was not to be and disappointingly they finished bottom of Division Five and were relegated to Division Six. The 1st continued their recent rival the following season finishing in 3rd place and the Reserves bounced back well from relegation to finish in runners-up spot in Division Six for a quick return to Division Five. Season 2012/13 saw the 1st team continue to be a force in Division One and again finished the season in 3rd place and the Reserves also enjoyed a good season back in Division Five finishing in 5th place and gaining promotion to Division Four due to other clubs laving or folding and the league restructuring. In 2013/14 the 1st team found the league stronger and had to settle for a finishing position of 9th and the Reserves (now playing the highest they had ever been) finished just above the relegation places. The 1st team bounced back well and finished 5th in 2014/15 with the Reserves stabilising in mid table. Season 2015/16 was a successful one for the club with the 1st team finishing runners-up to Waveney in Division One and gaining promotion to the Premier Division and the Reserves finishing as high as 6th in Division Four. The 2016/17 season saw the 1st team compete in the Premier Division for the first time in many years and they were delighted to secure a comfortable mid table 8th position come May, the Reserves also had a comfortable season and finally finished in 10th place. 2017/18 was a season to forget for the club with the 1st team struggling and although going to the last couple of matches relegation back to Division One was confirmed, being 4 points from safety. The Reserves also finished 2nd from bottom some 9 points from safety and relegation to Division Five North was confirmed. It was now important that the club bounced back and in 2018/19 they were delighted to find themselves challenging for promotion back to the Premier Division but it was not to be and they had to settle for 4th place, but hopes were high for the following season. The Reserves finished in 9th place. Last season the were once again in with a fighting chance of promotion and when the season was bought to an early end were sitting in 5th place, only 3 points behind 2nd place Gorleston Reserves, whilst the Reserves were fighting hard to avoid finishing in the bottom two, although they did have games in hand on many teams above them.

Football Trivia - Football On A Sunday

Forty years after the end of the conflict the Second World War saw the postponement of a Football League match in 1985. An unexploded Second World War bomb found near Sheffield United's Bramall Lane ground forced the postponement of their Second Division fixture against Oldham Athletic. After the bomb was safely disposed of the match was played 3 days later.

England fans disgraced themselves in Dublin on 15th February 1995, forcing the friendly match between the Republic of Ireland and England at Lansdowne Road to be abandoned. When Ireland took a 1-0 lead with a David Kelly goal in the 23rd minute a section of England ‘fans’ ripped up seats in the upper stand and threw them onto spectators below. No further play was possible and for only the third time an England match was abandoned.

Players were literally quaking in their boots on a Saturday afternoon in South Wales in 2018. The worst earthquake to hit the country in ten years - it had a 4.4 magnitude - was felt between Liverpool and Devon but it had its epicentre in South Wales. It saw the referee in the Welsh League match between Port Talbot and Taff's Well stop play for a spell in the first half, surely a unique experience for all concerned!

On the 6th April 2003, One of the more unusual reasons for abandoning a match. Tranmere had a 2-0 lead over Mansfield Town in a Second Division fixture at Prenton Park in April 2003 when spectator Stephen Anglesey decided to have a wander - and climbed one of the floodlight pylons. He couldn't be persuaded down and jumped the gap between the floodlights and the roof of the Cow Shed stand. Fearing for his safety and the safety of the spectators the crowd of over 7,000 were asked to leave the ground at half time and shortly afterwards the match was abandoned by referee Mike Ryan with Anglesey still on the roof.

A date to remember for Man City fans was 27th April 1974, When a back-heeled goal from Manchester City’s Denis Law resulted in one of the most famous goals in League history – it was against Manchester United, which put United on the verge of relegation. Law was immediately substituted and didn’t play League football again and the match was later abandoned although the result was allowed to stand.

A tragedy at Bramall Lane happened on 30th April 1927 when Bury full back Sam Wynne collapsed when about to take a free shortly before the interval at the First Division match between Sheffield United and Bury. He was stretchered off but died in the dressing room, the cause of death being found to be pneumonia. The match was abandoned at half time and when replayed the following Thursday (May 5th) the £680 gate receipts from the 15,000 crowd was donated to Sam Wynne's family.

15th May 2016 saw the most embarrassing postponement of all time? A 75,000 crowd was assembling at Old Trafford for what should have been Manchester United's last Premier League match of the 2015/16 season, against Bournemouth. Then a 'suspect device' was found in one of the toilets, the ground was evacuated, the match was called-off and a controlled explosion was carried out. It was later found that the 'suspect device' was a dummy bomb which had been used in a security training exercise at Old Trafford and which had unknowingly been left at the ground by mistake. No-one had discovered the very realistic-looking pipe-bomb until just before scheduled kick off - and then nobody was taking any chances. PLEASED TO SUPPORT WYMONDHAM TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB
