'...................................... 183 VITA ....................................................... 191 v CHAPTER ONE IN1RODUCTION Tne Scriptures teach that Christians are to be "filled or controlled" by God, the Holy Spirit. This thesis will define how the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within a person, what is involved in continually submitting one's life to the Holy Spirit's filling or control, and what is the behavior manifested in a Christian when controlled by the Holy Spirit. The filling of the Holy Spirit will be discussed in the life of the individual Christian, his family and the local church. Ultimately, this is a critical issue in the church as the individual Christian and his family comprise the congregation of the local church. This thesis is designed to be of value for any Christian, church, or denomination desirous of "walking in the Spirit." The thesis will propose that the Holy Spirit, when pe~tted to lead, will lead Christians, their families, the local church, and the local church's denomination in a direction that is consistent with the teaching of Holy Scripture. There is a variety of teaching taking place in local churches regarding how . 'I - . the Holy Spirit indwells a believer" and what is defined as the llfilling" of the Spirit. The topic of the Spirit-filled life and its impact upon the Christian, his family, and the local church will address how a person becomes indwelt by the Spirit and filled by the Spirit. The Scripture will confirm that God, the Holy Spirit, indwells the individual at the very moment saving faith is placed in the Lord Jesus Christ, and that the filling of the Spirit is a life-long experience of 1 2 surrendering to the control of God, the Holy Spirit. There are numerous mistaken definitions of how to identify a Spirit-filled Christian. This thesi~ will identify those characteristics which God, the Holy Spirit, imparts to the believer in Christ, who is filled by the Spirit. This thesis will strive to identify as erroneous those teachings requiring a need for a second baptism of the Spirit and the subsequent bestowal of the gift of "speaking in tongues." Thus, instead of the Christian being identified as Spirit­ filled based upon the drama of heightened emotional experiences, a study of what the Spirit-filled life truly resembles will be examined in Ephesians 5:18-6:17. A study of Ephesians 5:18-6:17 takes the focus off of euphoric feelings of emotional stimulation such as stressed in charismatic organizations, and instead . charts how a Christian should behave when filled (controlled) by the Holy Spirit. The rationale and value of this thesis is that it describes the consequences of a Christian believing that being Spirit-filled is dependent upon highly ~harged emotional feelings derived from subjective sensations. These sensations or experiences may include speaking in tongues, receiving a second baptism in the Spirit, or some other experiential manifestation of the Spirit's filling. This thesis will establish that the believer does not get any more of the Spirit after conversion, but that the Spirit desires surrender of the believer's submission to Him, and that this is ultimately proven by an earnest desire to obey the Word of Godin the life of the Christian. Thus, this thesis will convey that when a believer is Spirit-filled, he will habitually obey the Bible, and will have a firm understanding that the Spirit leads the believer in thinking and acting in ways that are in agreement with the teaching of Scripture. 3 Statement of the Problem What does the Holy Spirit controlled life resemble and produce in the Christian, his family and his church? The purpose of this thesis project is to issue biblical teaching regarding the "fruit of obedience" the Holy Spirit produces through a Christian in his life, his family and his church as a result of that believer being "Spirit-filled." Furthermore, a revealing of the negative implications for the believer, his family and the local church when erroneous teaching is accepted about the Spirit-filled life as propagated by the church's denomination is a purpose of this project. Perhaps I should have showed open disdain Spirit was started to guarantee that I would be left alone by this group, for my fair-mindedness and nods of polite in 1954 by the Rev. A. Pierce Middleton affirmation (translated, “that’s great for you, but for me, no thanks”) soon gave way to a group of “Crusaders” periodically showing up at my door, waving to me from across the quad and endlessly inviting me to their prayer gatherings. I never showed up to these gatherings, but the one thing I kept wondering, in addition to why they wouldn’t leave me alone, was why they were always smiling? Two years into college, I had a conversion experience directly from God as I was walking down the street. I had no idea what to do, as I knew next to nothing about Christianity. I proceeded to go through my book collection (yes, this was before the Internet, kids) in search of something that might make sense of what had just happened to me.

What do we mean by the “Pentecostal Movement?” Pentecostalism is a movement within Christianity that places special emphasis on a direct personal experience of God through the baptism in the Holy Spirit. The term Pentecostal is derived from Pentecost, a Greek term describing the Jewish Feast of Weeks. For Christians, this event commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the followers of Jesus Christ, as described in the second chapter of the Book of Acts. Pentecostals tend to see their movement as reflecting the same kind of spiritual power, worship styles and teachings that were found in the early church. Latin American Studies Thinking in the Spirit: The Emergence of Latin American Pentecostal Scholars and Their Theology of Social Concern (153 pp.) Director of Thesis: Thomas Walker Latin American Pentecostalism is often characterized as being either socially and politically conservative or apolitical. Nevertheless, Latin American Pentecostal scholars have expressed progressive political and social concerns. In this thesis, I synthesize Latin American progressive Pentecostal theology and explore the prominence given to the Holy Spirit in such doctrine. I also examine the influences of liberation theology on the movement. I argue that the emergence of progressive Latin American Pentecostal scholars has thus far been an ambiguous phenomenon. These scholars have played an important role in bringing Latin American Pentecostals into the ecumenical sphere. Also, their social doctrine seems to be both spurring and reinforcing social and political concern in some segments of grassroots Latin American Pentecostalism. On the other hand, progressive Pentecostalism has not resonated at the grassroots level to the degree that one might expect, given the marginalized social class base of Latin American Pentecostalism.

    DISSIDENCE AND CONFORMISM IN RELIGIOUS MOVEMENTS: WHAT DIFFERENCE – IF ANY - SEPARATES THE CATHOLIC CHARISMATIC RENEWAL AND PENTECOSTAL CHURCHES? David Lehmann Cambridge University This paper tries to distinguish between religious movements which transform religious life and others which do so to a small or insignificant extent, using the contrast between conformism and dissidence – and emphatically avoiding quasi-political metaphors such as ‘progressive’ and conservative’. In outlining the contrast, drawing principally on Brazilian and North American examples, the paper relies on the dialectic between popular and erudite religion, and compares the Charismatic Renewal movement within Catholicism with the Pentecostal movement in search of significant differences, or rather in search of how to understand the differences and the similarities. Religious institutions are always vulnerable to pressure from below. The religious field, which to some may appear deeply conservative, is in fact in permanent flux. Indeed, against certain sorts of expectation, religious institutions seem remarkably open – some might say, vulnerable – to external pressure for change. Compared with political institutions for example, they are less able, and on occasion have less desire, to resist the voices of the disempowered, the poor or simply of their rank-and-file followers. The space for change, and for the laity to be a protagonist of change, is most self- evident in secularized societies where the state has detached itself from formal links with the institution of religion, or where, as in the UK, those formal links have lost their compulsory content1 with regard to observance of religious norms. But even in countries – many Muslim countries apart from Turkey, as well as in Israel – where the links between state and religion are formal and carry some degree of coercive force, the institutions, doctrines and practices of religious life do not stand still, and are subject to multiple pressures from ‘below’.

    Overcoming Holy Spirit shyness in the life of the church Cheryl Bridges Johns T he contemporary church suffers from what James Forbes calls “Holy Spirit shyness.”1 Most Christians know that the Holy Spirit exists, but in their day-to-day existence and in the life and wor- ship of the churches they display hesitation about and even fear of the third person of the Trinity. In his popular book The Forgotten God, Francis Chan com- ments: “From my perspective, the Holy Spirit is tragically ne- glected and, for all practical purposes, forgotten. While no evangelical would deny His existence, I’m willing to bet there are millions of churchgoers across America who Most Christians cannot confidently say they have experienced know that the Holy His presence or action in their lives over the Spirit exists, but in past year.
