  • The Impact of Retro Stadiums on Major League Baseball Franchises
ABSTRACT MENEFEE, WILLIAM CHADWICK. The Impact of Retro Stadiums on Major League Baseball Franchises. (Under the direction of Dr. Judy Peel). The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of “retro” stadiums on professional baseball franchises. Retro stadiums, baseball-exclusive facilities modeled on classic architectural designs of the past, were built at an increasing rate beginning in 1992 with Baltimore’s Camden Yards. This study analyzed changes in franchises’ attendance, winning percentage, revenue and team value in the seasons following a team’s relocation to a retro stadium. Retro stadiums were found to positively increase attendance, revenue and team value for franchises at a higher rate than teams that did not build retro stadiums. An analysis of these variables and a discussion of the results for all individual franchises that constructed retro stadiums during the 1992-2004 period are presented in this study. • Paul Budenbender, Epoxy Coating Specialists, Onaga
Budenbender (epoxy) – part 1 This is Kansas Profile. I'm Ron Wilson, director of the Huck Boyd National Institute for Rural Development at Kansas State University. Let’s go to Kauffman Stadium, home of the defending world champion Kansas City Royals. Note how the concourse floor is smooth, clean, and beautiful. That’s because this floor was coated with a special treatment, produced by a company with ties to rural Kansas. It’s today’s Kansas Profile. Paul Budenbender is co-owner of Epoxy Coating Specialists, or ECS, which coated the concourses at Kauffman Stadium as well as floors and walls in many other facilities across the country. Paul’s family has roots in Pottawatomie County, where his ancestors homesteaded near Fostoria. Paul’s dad went to K-State and then worked for the Corps of Engineers, which eventually transferred him to the head office in Kansas City. Paul grew up at Shawnee but spent summers on his grandparent’s farm. Tragically, Paul’s father passed away from cancer at age 48. Paul went to work for a painting and flooring contractor in Olathe. He worked there 16 years and met his wife Pam. Paul’s work involved the emerging use of epoxy to paint floors and walls. In 1995, Paul and a man named Dave Schloegel and some other friends decided to go out on their own. They created Epoxy Coating Specialists, or ECS. Today, ECS is a leading installer of industrial polymer floorings, coatings, and linings. These are essentially hard epoxy resins that can coat a floor or wall to create a hard, clean, durable, waterproof surface.

After closing the books on its 2015 fiscal year (July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015), the Symphony is proud to report a very strong season subscriber base, outstanding single ticket sales and record public exposure with no signs of slowing. Excellent financials accompany the impressive growth of the Symphony’s artistic reputation under the baton of Music Director Michael Stern who begins his second decade with the organization for the 2015-16 season. “I am very proud of all that we have accomplished together,” says Symphony Executive Director Frank Byrne. “We are incredibly grateful to this extraordinary community for their attendance, their financial support, and, most of all, their passion for what we do. This community is excited about the Kansas City Symphony, and they sense our commitment to sharing great music with the widest segment of the population. Whether we are in our magnificent Helzberg Hall, in an area school, at Kauffman Stadium, or wherever we may perform, people feel the commitment and energy that our wonderful musicians invest in each performance. Kansas City is increasingly being recognized as a destination for the arts, and we are proud to be leaders in bringing artistic excellence to our hometown.” In the 2014-15 season, the Symphony brought in nearly $2.8 million in subscription revenue and an additional nearly $2 million in single ticket revenue.

2013 KANSAS CITY ROYALS SPRING TRAINING NOTES Kansas City Royals (11-1-1) @ San Francisco Giants (4-6-3) Saturday, March 9, 2013 DOUBLE DIP WASHED AWAY--The Royals were victimized by a pair of truncated games yesterday for the first time in franchise history, according to the “Voice of the Royals”, Denny Matthews, who has seen more Royals games than anyone so we’ll take his word for it...the sky opened up with two outs in the top of the third inning during the scheduled day game in Surprise against the Indians...the game was officially called after an hour and nine minute delay with KC leading 3-2...the nightcap made it through four frames at Salt River Fields with the Rockies in the lead 3-1 before the rain came...the delay was markedly shorter in Scottsdale, as the umpires called the game just two minutes after asking for the tarp. DEFICITS STILL SCARCE THROUGH FIRST TWO WEEKS--To say the first two weeks of the spring season have gone well for the Royals would be a vast understatement, as Kansas City has barely faced a deficit...the Royals trailed for the first time entering an inning in the fifth Thursday, snapping a stretch of 37 consecutive innings the club either lead or was tied...the Royals, overall, have been behind for only 13 of the 117 innings the club has played to this point. VS. GIANTS--Today is the second and final meeting of the spring between the Upcoming Probables Royals and the defending champs...KC earned a 9-5 win exactly a week ago across the valley in Surprise...the clubs haven’t met in the regular season since 2008.
