Royals Name Mike Matheny 17Th Manager in Franchise History For Immediate Release: ROYALS NAME MIKE MATHENY 17TH MANAGER IN FRANCHISE HISTORY KANSAS CITY, MO (October 31, 2019) – The Kansas City Royals today announced that Mike Matheny has been named the 17th full-time manager in franchise history. He will be formally introduced to the Kansas City media at 1:00 p.m today in the Level One Interview Room at Kauffman Stadium. “Our entire organization is delighted to announce and celebrate the hiring of Mike Matheny,” said Dayton Moore, Royals Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations and General Manager. “Every department has had the pleasure to work and interact with him this past season. Through this interaction, it became very clear to our leadership team that Mike is the obvious person to lead our baseball team. Mike Matheny is a passionate leader with strong virtues, intelligence, and a relentless commitment to help players reach their full potential. We are looking forward to him and Kristin being a part of this very special city. “The strength of the relationship between Mr. Glass and Mr. Sherman allowed our leadership team to move forward in a natural way as we went through this very important process,” Moore continued. “I’m thankful for their support and guidance.” John Sherman, the new owner-in-waiting of the Royals added: “I’ve been well-informed by Dayton and the leadership team about the material activities underway with the Club, and have been impressed with the thoughtful, strategic process Dayton has run to get to this important decision.” Matheny, 49, managed over 1,000 games with the St. Louis Cardinals from 2012-18, his first managerial opportunity. He compiled a .555 winning percentage (591-474), while leading the Cards to a Wild Card berth in his first season (2012), then following up with three straight National League Central titles (2013-15), becoming the first manager to reach the postseason in each of his first four seasons. His clubs posted a winning record each year with St. Louis, including a Major League-best 100 victories in 2015. During his tenure, the Cardinals had the third-highest winning percentage in the Majors, behind only the Dodgers (.573) and Washington (.564). As of today, his 591 wins will open the 2020 season seventh among active managers in the Majors. Matheny led the Cardinals to the World Series in 2013, falling to the Boston Red Sox, while reaching the National League Championship Series in 2012 and 2014, before bowing to the eventual World Series champion San Francisco Giants both seasons. He managed 43 postseason games with St. Louis, which are third-most in the Major Leagues since 2012, trailing only Houston’s AJ Hinch (50), and the Dodgers’ Dave Roberts (47). Matheny’s 21 postseason victories are fifth most in baseball over the last eight postseasons. He was hired by the Royals as a Special Advisor to Player Development on November 23, 2018, following his tenure as Cardinals’ manager. He served in a similar capacity with St. Louis (2007-11), prior to accepting the managerial position on November 14, 2011. Matheny spent 13 seasons in the Major Leagues as a catcher, playing for Milwaukee (1994- 98), Toronto (1999), St, Louis (2000-04) and San Francisco (2005-06). A defensive specialist, Matheny was a four-time Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner, while setting a Major League record with 252 consecutive errorless games and 1,565-straight errorless chances behind the plate, a mark which has since been broken. A native of Columbus, Ohio, Matheny was a 1991 eighth-round selection by the Brewers out of the University of Michigan, after co-captaining the Wolverines’ baseball team. He and his wife, Kristin, have five children: Katie, Tate, Luke, Jacob and Blaise as well as one grandson, Ryker. # # # .

    ABSTRACT MENEFEE, WILLIAM CHADWICK. The Impact of Retro Stadiums on Major League Baseball Franchises. (Under the direction of Dr. Judy Peel). The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of “retro” stadiums on professional baseball franchises. Retro stadiums, baseball-exclusive facilities modeled on classic architectural designs of the past, were built at an increasing rate beginning in 1992 with Baltimore’s Camden Yards. This study analyzed changes in franchises’ attendance, winning percentage, revenue and team value in the seasons following a team’s relocation to a retro stadium. Retro stadiums were found to positively increase attendance, revenue and team value for franchises at a higher rate than teams that did not build retro stadiums. An analysis of these variables and a discussion of the results for all individual franchises that constructed retro stadiums during the 1992-2004 period are presented in this study. That’s because this floor was coated with a special treatment, produced by a company with ties to rural Kansas. It’s today’s Kansas Profile. Paul Budenbender is co-owner of Epoxy Coating Specialists, or ECS, which coated the concourses at Kauffman Stadium as well as floors and walls in many other facilities across the country. Paul’s family has roots in Pottawatomie County, where his ancestors homesteaded near Fostoria. Paul’s dad went to K-State and then worked for the Corps of Engineers, which eventually transferred him to the head office in Kansas City. Paul grew up at Shawnee but spent summers on his grandparent’s farm. Tragically, Paul’s father passed away from cancer at age 48. Paul went to work for a painting and flooring contractor in Olathe. He worked there 16 years and met his wife Pam. Paul’s work involved the emerging use of epoxy to paint floors and walls. In 1995, Paul and a man named Dave Schloegel and some other friends decided to go out on their own. They created Epoxy Coating Specialists, or ECS. Fans of any sport are interested in predicting the outcomes of sporting events. Whether it is prediction based off of experience, a gut feeling, instinct, simulation based off of video games, or simple statistical measures, many fans develop their own approach to predicting the results of games. In many situations, these methods are not reliable and lack a fundamental basis. Even the experts are unsuccessful in most situations. In this paper we present a sports data mining approach to uncover hidden knowledge within the game of baseball. The goal is to develop a model using data mining methods that will predict American League champions, National League champions, and World Series winners at a higher success rate compared to traditional models. Our approach will analyze historical regular season data of playoff contenders by applying kernel machine learning schemes in an effort to uncover potentially useful information that helps predict future champions. Introduction The game of baseball is becoming more reliant on analytical and statistic based approaches to assemble competitive baseball teams. The most well-known application of statistics to baseball is captured in Michael Lewis’s book "Moneyball". Applying a simple statistical approach, Moneyball demonstrated that on-base percentage (OBP) and slugging percentage (SLG) are better indicators of offensive success than other standard statistics such as batting average, homeruns, and runs batted in (Lewis 2003).

(Former St. Louis Cardinals Owner's Representative) Kansas City Royals This state-of-the-art professional baseball stadium was constructed partially on the site of the 1 Royal Way old stadium it replaced. Using a phased construction approach, the team began construction on Kansas City, Missouri 64129 the new facility during the 2005 baseball season - managing site constraints as well as safety and access issues. Upon the completion of the 2005 season, Hunt/KWAME managed the demolition of the old stadium and completed construction of the new Busch Stadium in time for opening day of the 2006 baseball season. KWAME's role as a sub consultant for Hunt was to provide personnel and professional services to the design-build team as the associate contractor. KWAME managed the general contractors and provided the team with project managers, project engineers, superintendents, project control specialists, document control specialists. and project administrators. KWAME also implemented an innovative mentor/protégé program to ensure high levels of M/WBE participation. The scope of the project included demolition of the existing Busch Stadium, construction of a new baseball stadium, utility relocation, street works and site development.
