Currently, Walter is the foreman of the operation and resides on the second floor of the building. Walther's brothers, David and Bobby, work there as well as a couple of cousins and several locals. Over the years the operation has grown and the creamery has expanded. Rail service is brisk at the creamery. In addition to the daily incoming milk cars with cans picked up along the line, there is the daily with internal tanks that takes the daily collection to the bottling plant. Ice is available for the farmers from the ice house (left end) to help keep their milk cold so every couple of weeks a arrives with a load of ice. And coal for the boiler is brought in by rail; since the creamery is too small to handle a full car load, it is shared with two other industries in the area. The operation of the creamery is very simple. Local farmers bring their milk to the creamery daily using the ramp on the back, it is checked for quality, and then added to the tanks. Farmer's milk cans are cleaned immediately and the farmer picks them up at the door just past the ramp and takes them back home for the next day. Milk cans also arrive by rail after being picked up by the 'milk train' at various milk platforms along the mainline. The collected milk from the tanks is then shipped out daily. As with all B.T.S. kits, this masterpiece is laser cut and engineered for easy construction. Slots and tabs eliminate alignment problems. Adhesive-backed window sashes make glazing the windows a snap. All window 3 sashes can be positioned open or closed. HO Scale #27305 O Scale #17305 Dodson Farm's Milk Platform Best way to insure that Dodson Farm's Creamery had a good supply of milk was to make it easy for the dairymen to get it to them. For farms too far for the daily wagon or pickup drive, the company built platforms along the main line where milk cans could be dropped off for pickup by the local milk train. Empty cans were returned later. As with all B.T.S. kits, this kit is laser cut and engineered for easy construction and features interior bracing and a positionable door. Milk cans are included. 6 Encore Program A Change in B.T.S. Policy Several years ago on our web site, we asked your opinion on the following: Since we purchased Master Creations in 1998, we have upheld the MC policy of not rerunning limited edition kits. However, from the time we acquired MC, the term 'limited edition' really has not had the same meaning since we keep limited run kits in production until sales fall off. At that time, we feel the market is saturated and stop producing them. Our logic is that some folks need time to decide if they want a kit and having a short availability window is not a good thing for them or the hobby. We are extremely happy that the majority of our kits end up on a layout and are not kept in the box to use as a future investment. But that does not the help the modeler new to the hobby or one who has changed their modeling direction. We get calls and emails frequently from folks looking for this limited edition kit or that one, and they are frustrated by the challenges they face trying to build their layouts because these kits are no longer available. So, we are thinking about doing what could be called an Encore Program where some of the older kits are brought back. All of the pre-B.T.S. kits will need a complete re-engineering before we put the B.T.S. label on them; they were very hard to assemble and the instructions were weak. These problems will be gone in the Encore kits. The challenge for us is to develop a way to keep the original limited edition kit's value for the folks who purchased it just because it was a limited edition. Perhaps we could do some small changes to make the kit different, yet basically keep it looking the same. B.T.S. labels, new & improved instructions, no serial numbers, and better kit engineering will make these versions different anyway, so I suspect the reality is that the collectability will still survive on the older kits just because they are the older kits. Over 100 folks gave us their opinions. Only two felt it was a bad idea, and one of them admitted he does not even buy kits so the decision has no affect on him. Based upon all the positive comments we received, we have decided to proceed with the Encore Program in HO and O Scales. The first kit that came back was the Hyde Pulp Mill. Others will be done as time allows. We still believe the value of the original collectable kits will be maintained since there will be very obvious differences in the packaging. In addition, there will be differences in the details and, in some cases, even the engineering of the kit, the materials, and the instructions. We hope you will be as excited as we are about the return of old friends.

Thanks for your continued support! Diane & Bill

We constantly get calls from modelers looking for one of our discontinued kits. In response, we are starting an Encore Program where older kits come back to life. When built, an Encore kit will basically look like the original version, but differ in packaging, details, and in some cases, material, engineering, and instructions. Please welcome back on stage . The Hyde Pulp Mill !!

Back again after a hiatus of over a decade! The Hyde Pulp Mill complex consists of eight buildings, a storage tank, and a riverside dock. And includes workers, rats, pigeons, and lots of junk and clutter. The kit consists of laser-cut basswood, plywood, and cardstock, and includes a load of brass, plastic, & white metal detail castings. The peel&stick window sashes and doors can be installed open or closed. Overall footprint is about a scale 180 x 95 and is serviced by two tracks. The Hyde Pulp Mill complex in O Scale is finally a reality.

The Hyde Pulp Mill complex consists of eight buildings, a storage tank, and a riverside dock. It is a vast complex and it is being released as seven different kits. Each can be used as stand-alone buildings or tied together into the Hyde Pulp Mill complex. If building the entire Hyde complex a piece at a time, start with the dock, then the shipping/storage building. These are key for placements of the other structures.

Hyde Pulp Mill Main Building & Office

The main Hyde building contains the digester where wood chips are chemically turned into wood pulp then the pulp is rolled into slabs. The original office space behind the front bay window proved too small over time and a second office area was added to the side. Loading docks on both sides provide both rail and truck access. Most of the photos shown here have the building positioned for use as a stand alone industry, so it is not strickly a Hyde complex kit. If building the entire Hyde complex, this is the third kit to build and install after the Dock and Shipping/Storage Building. The kit has laser-cut wood components and the model features the interior flooring, peel&stick shingles & window sashes, and positionable doors & windows. The approximate scale footprint is 114' x 48' and height over the watertank finial is a scale 55'. Detail castings in brass, white metal and resin are included bringing the total number of parts to over 775. Also included in this kit are the crossover bridge and dock to connect to the Shipping/Storage Building in the Hyde Complex. #14095.1 O Scale

The Chipping Shed is the first stop pulpwood makes on the way to becoming paper. At the Hyde, the logs are unloaded by hand, the bark is stripped off and stored in the bin for resale, and the logs are manually fed into the mechanical chipper. The resulting chips are moved via conveyor into the chip storage bin. Daily a truck from the local tannery will come pick up the bark. The kit has laser-cut wood and cardstock components and includes the shed, mechanical house, conveyor, and the storage bin. The photo at the right shows these four pieces installed on the Hyde complex. The approximate total footprint is 60' x 68'. Detail castings in brass, white metal and resin are included. Hyde Pulp Mill Shipping/Storage Building Originally, the finished slabs of pulp were bailed and stored in the main building. However, with the increase in the size of , and the increased production of the mill, this storage area was quickly outgrown. The new structure was built just across the track from the main loading door, and since additional office space was needed, a second story was included in the design. The photos shown here have the building positioned for use as a freight house, small factory, or any sort of supply company, so it is not strickly a Hyde complex kit. If building the Hyde complex, this is the second kit to build and install; it is key to positioning the main building. When using in the Hyde complex, the ramp will be used in another place. The kit has laser-cut wood components and the model features the interior flooring, and positionable doors & windows. The approximate footprint is 64' x 30'. Detail castings in brass, white metal and resin are included. O Scale version shown. #14095.3 O Scale 14 B.TB.T..SS.. EncoreEncore ProgramProgram Hyde Pulp Mill Boiler House One of the original buildings that still stands at the Hyde Pulp Mill is the simple boiler house. Here a water-tube boiler provides the steam heat needed to cook the chips. And steam is used for heating and for operating some auxiliary equipment. When installed in the Hyde Pulp Mill complex, the fire will be fed from the chips that cannot be used in the pulping process. A pipe will deliver these chips from the main Hyde building with the help of a small amount of air pressure. Water is received from an underground pipe from the pump house and, in case of emergencies if the pump goes out, gravity feed from the water tank on top of the main Hyde building. The kit has laser-cut wood components and the model features positionable doors & window. The approximate footprint is 20' x 26'. Detail castings in brass, white metal, and resin are included. #14095.4 O Scale

15 B.TB.T..SS.. EncoreEncore ProgramProgram

Hyde Pulp Mill Pump House, Loading Stand, & Turpentine Tank The Hyde Pulp Mill needs a lot of water for the pulping process. Pumps inside this small structure pull water from the river and send it to the boiler house and main building. In addition, the turpentine that is extracted from the pulp and stored in the tank needs to occasionally be pumped into the tank cars. The kit includes the pump house, loading stand, turpentine tank and a fire hose storage shed in case of fire. The kit has laser-cut wood and cardstock components. The approximate footprint varies depending on the placement of the tank, but the sample is about 30' x 50'. Detail castings in brass, white metal, plastic, and resin are included. #14095.5 O Scale 16 B.TB.T..SS.. EncoreEncore ProgramProgram

Hyde Pulp Mill Dock

The dock is an interesting part of the Hyde complex. When the mill was first built, a smaller dock jutted straight out to provide access to the small river boats. Later as he was adding to the mill, Mr. Hyde realized a larger dock was needed, so the retaining wall and a more substantial dock was built. Rails were added to the dock to make better use of the space along the river.

While the dock is an important part of the Hyde Pulp Mill complex and should be the first component to install, it can also be used by itself as a simple freight dock or tied in with other industries.

The kit has laser-cut wood components and designed for easy construction using 2" foamboard for the ground level behind the bulkhead. The approximate footprint is a scale 150' x 42'. The dock is designed to use Atlas flex track (not included) but hand-laid track can also be used. O Scale version shown.

18 B.TB.T..SS.. EncoreEncore ProgramProgram Cabin Creek Coal Tipple

The name 'tipple' is derived from the time when men would push carts full of coal to the wooden bunker and tip them over for dumping. Wood was used as the building material of choice until some time in the late 1920's when metal framing became faster and cheaper to use. Wood tipples lasted into the 1950's in some areas. The Cabin Creek Coal Tipple is a freelanced composite of several different tipples located in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Three tracks are serviced here. A power house, the place where a small steam engine generates electricity to run the machinery of the tipple, is provided as is a small storage shed. From the back of the headhouse at the top, a covered conveyor runs up the mountain side toward the drift mine. The Cabin Creek Coal Tipple is laser cut and engineered for easy construction. Other features include positionable doors, window sashes, and coal chutes. Stephens and his crew have made many more 'Stars and Stripes' since the start of the American Flag Company in 1912. After serving in the Marine Corp in WWI, L.C. came home and went straight back to work. During the late 1920s, right before the Great Depression, L.C. added an elevator to the building and a sprinkler system. With all this and other maintenance done, the company survived the depression and continues to prosper today. The American Flag Company is a perfect industry for that tight V-shaped space. The trapezoid shape, exterior stair case, loading dock, roof-top billboard & water tank, positionable windows and doors, and a bunch of brass & pewter detail castings make this laser-cut craftsman kit a ‘must have’ for any layout. Rail Facility John McCabe's large logging company and sawmill complex relies on locomotives and cars being ready when needed to do the job. This requires a round-the-clock effort of McCabe's railroad men and their facilities to provide servicing and repairs. The Rail Facility is a component for the McCabe Lumber Company series of craftsman kits. Like the sawmill complex, the Rail Facility is offered in individual kits so you can pick and choose what you need for your layout. Some of these kits are offered in both standard gauge and narrow gauge versions, but most kits will work for either. McCabe Crew Quarters Using old railcars for other uses is a standard practice around the logging lines. A place for the crew to rest was needed at the McCabe facility, and an old Pullman was acquired for that purpose. Lifting it off its trucks, removing all the brake gear, and adding a couple of oil heaters was all that was needed. One of these days, the crew will get around to painting it in the standard Oxide Red of the McCabe facility, but for now, the old Pullman Green will have to do.

The kit consists of a plastic car body, laser-cut basswood and plywood, and brass & white metal detail castings. Overall footprint is about a scale 95' x 15'.

It is not the intent of this kit to build a complete Shay or one that will ever operate. The instructions will provide the steps of the basic assembly, and some suggestions for the final detailing. There are extra parts that can be used either on the loco or as some of the junk and clutter around the scene. There is no limit to the variations that can be created by adding or leaving off different parts and various pipes. Experiment with different looks and have fun. McCabe Fire Train

Fire is a nasty thing for a lumber company. And while he hoped it was never used, John McCabe had the shop crew build a three-car fire train. This train was kept ready in the yard just in case. He also constructed additional water cars and used these on other parts of the line, but they could be added to the train in case of an emergency. The firefighting car carries a supply of water and has the engine-powered pump on top to feed water to the rotating nozzle or the smaller hose. The pump can pull water from the additional water car or, by using the siphon hose on the side, from a convenient creek. The tool car provided a place to Firefighting Car store the various firefighting tools such as , buckets, additional hoses, etc. The firefighting and water cars were inspired by a car from the Pacific Lumber Co. The tool car is based on a Rayonier Lumber Company home-built car. This Master Creations' kit consists of laser-cut basswood and plywood, and brass, plastic, & white metal detail Water Car castings. At the Slatyfork Sawmill, the power house is the thing that makes everything work. The original boiler house was rebuilt after the 1933 fire and the addition was added to the back to house larger boilers. Steam from these two boilers power the steam engines in the mill, and provide heat to the kiln. In 1940, the dynamo house was added to the side of the boiler house and a small steam engine was installed to turn the dynamos and generate electrical power. Sawdust from the bandsaws becomes fuel for the boilers and is stored in the large bin until needed. This Master Creations' kit consists of laser-cut basswood, plywood, cardstock and 50+ detail castings. Interior walls and floors are included, as are several power poles and the large power junction behind the dynamo house. And the standard features of B.T.S. kits are there... positionable doors and window sashes, slot and tab construction, peel & stick window sashes, brass door knobs, removable roofs, and well-engineered construction providing fast and easy assembly. Boilers are not included, but if enough folks want them, perhaps a short run can be made; let us know!

The McCabe Lumber Co. Tramway connects the sawmill to the storage yard, drying kiln, and planing shed. It is a key feature of the complex. In this kit are the eight drying platforms, cart turntable, single and double track tramways, two carts, and the loading docks. As the lumber is cut in the sawmill, it is stacked on four-wheel carts and pushed out on the tramway to the storage yard. There it is stacked on platforms and allowed to air dry. Layers of lumber are separated by thin boards to allow the air to circulate. At the McCabe facility, the loading dock for boxcars is part of the tramway. This kit consists of laser-cut basswood, plywood, detail castings, and a very complex appearance. However, the well- engineered construction provides fast and easy assembly. Weathered rail and spikes are part of this kit, as are the laser-cut spike holes! And in the box are hundreds of pieces of pre-cut lumber for stacking in the yard. If the Drying Kiln is to be included in your complex, it will be easier to build the kiln and the tramway at the same time. The footprint is about 100' x 110'. Pump House One item critical for the operation and survival of the sawmill complex is water. Water is pumped from the mill pond or river into storage tanks around the complex where it feeds the various boilers. This is the job of the pump house. The pumps, and the engines to drive them, are located in this house. The pump house at the McCabe Lumber Co. seems to be the collection point for many pieces of junk and clutter including the 1876 Challenger Pump that has been removed from service. A pipe rack stands along a side of the pump house to hold the various leftover pieces of pipe. A floating dock stands beside the pump house in the mill pond in case there is work to do on the inlet pipes. This kit consists of laser-cut basswood, plywood, and cardstock, tarpaper roofing, stone foundation, and over a dozen white metal and brass detail castings. The tabbed, well-engineered construction provides fast and easy assembly. The kit can be built as shown on the stone foundation, or on flatland with a timber foundation. Fresh-cut logs are unloaded into the mill pond by leverage. Chains are run under the logs and connected to the large beam at the top of the slope. When the cable is pulled up by the hoist, the logs are flipped off the car into the Log Dump pond.

John McCabe located an old Barnhart loader, got a new electric hoist, and cobbled them together to form the power for the dump. A common trestle was run out along the edge of the mill pond, and sloping beams were added to help ease the logs into the pond.

This kit consists of laser-cut basswood, plywood, and cardstock, corrugated roofing, and detail castings. The kit includes all the ties needed, but does not include the rail. It can be built as standard gauge, dual gauge, or narrow gauge. The footprint is about 110' x 55' and the length of the trestle can be reduced if space is short. Fire Hose Storage & Water Tank Fire is the worst thing that can happen to a sawmill. And sadly, history shows that it happened often! With all that wood stacked around, sparks from the boiler house or a steam loco can get things going. Since the first McCabe sawmill was lost to a fire, John McCabe decided to reduce the risk. A 38-foot high water tower was built strictly for the purpose of holding water just in case of fire. And six fire hose storage sheds were placed around the yard providing quick and easy access to fire hoses. Water was supplied to the sheds via underground pipes. This kit consists of laser-cut basswood, plywood, and cardstock, tarpaper roofing, and white metal and brass detail castings. The tabbed, well-engineered construction provides fast and easy assembly. 60 Behind the Scenes The sad reality of model railroading is that there are space limitations on the layout. Tracks run close to walls, and real estate is reduced down to a matter of inches. Painted and printed backdrops visually extend the area, but often do not provide the level of detail desired. The Behind the Scenes series of kits will do the trick. These are designed to sit against the walls and backdrops that limit the layout and will give the extra detail desired. HO Version Shown

Fire is a problem for all towns, and Cabin Creek decided to spend the money and build a big fire station to replace the old volunteer fire house that burned down. Cabin Creek Powerhouse In early days small communities depended upon the local mine or sawmill powerhouse to give them electricity. Inside the building would be a boiler to generate steam; it would be located under the stack. A generator run by that steam that produces electricity would be located closer to the gable end door. And there would also be some control panels to help route the power where needed. Coal for the boiler is delivered by rail or truck to the underground pit where a conveyor pulls it up into the powerhouse. This kit consists of laser-cut basswood, plywood, and detail castings. Roundhouses, offices, shop buildings, storage sheds, freight houses, locomotive service facilities, and lots more. Using prototype structures that have a generic look, we will be offering everything needed to build a complete rail yard.

New River Yard Freight House

#07500 S Scale #17500 O Scale #27500 HO Scale

Unless your company had its own rail siding, chances are good that your wagons or trucks carried your shipments to the railroad's freight house for shipment. At the freight house, the goods were logged in, the paperwork and billing done, and the goods were stored until the next outgoing freight car was available. Incoming goods were handled the same way. This is a variation of the CB&Q prototype. The footprint of the building is 74' x 20' with a 30' loading dock on the end. It can be built with scribed siding or board & batten.

New River Yard Narrow Gauge Boxcar Storage Shed #07507 S Scale #17507 O Scale #27507 HO Scale There is never enough storage space in the yard. And the cheapest storage available is to use old, worn-out pieces of rolling stock. This shed is based upon the one that stood at the Sierra Railroad. The footprint is approximately 7’ x 19’. 72 New River Yard Series

MoW Shed #07501 S Scale #17501 O Scale #27501 HO Scale Maintenance of Way, i.e., the maintenance of the track and roadbed requires the railroad to keep a stockpile of spikes, tie plates, switch stands, and other components. This kit consists of laser-cut basswood, plywood, and cardstock, tarpaper roofing, detail castings, and loads of character. It was based upon an AT&SF prototype. The doors are positionable, and individual battens are included if board-and- batten siding is desired. The tabbed, well-engineered construction provides fast and easy assembly. The footprint is about 22' x 29'.

Handcar Shed #07503 S Scale #17503 O Scale #27503 HO Scale

Track gangs needed a place to store their handcars when not in use as well as all their tools and supplies. Sheds with tracks quickly answered the need. The prototype for this model was near Delta, PA on the Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad. The footprint is approximately 18’ x 20’.

Signal Maintainers' Storage Old rail cars were often used for storage. Here an old baggage car has been turned into the signal maintainers' storage facility; a place where signal heads, wiring, and other important components are kept handy. Kit includes a plastic body and roof with laser-cut wood components. Details include pallets, birds, signal heads, and assorted junk. Elevated Crossing Shanty

Before the invention of automatic gate control at grade crossing, the heavy use crossings had a flagman on duty to lower the gates to protect lives. Some crossing shanties were elevated to give the flagman a better view. This crossing shanty is based upon one from the D&H that was still in use in the early 1960s.

This kit consists of laser-cut basswood, plywood, and cardstock, with white metal & plastic detail castings. The tabbed construction and peel-and-stick window sashes ease assembly. The footprint, over the roof eaves, is approximately 8’ x 8’.

Some Random Thoughts...

Thanks for taking the time to look through our catalog, and for your continued support of our products. As full-time hobby manufacturers, we know that our main job is helping you enjoy our hobby. To do that, Diane and I are working hard to insure that the products we offer give you high quality, exceptional realism, hours of satisfaction, and an excellent value. We have a lot of projects underway and we feel confident that, when they are announced, you will be as excited about them as we are now. One of our goals is to announce products just before they are ready to ship. In some cases, we have even had kits on the shelf prior to the announcement being made! Naturally, there are some things that are out of our control and these can often delay a project; but, we are working hard to reduce these potential delays by stockpiling some of the components that can cause outside delays. Your comments and suggestions are always welcome. Let us know what you want, and we will give it serious consideration. While we have a very aggressive project plan already developed, your ideas help keep us on track with your desires.
