In the last few years a lot of media companies and groups have launched divisions for digital content and new media development and adaptation of already existing formats for the multi-platform distribution with focus an access from the mobile devices.

Some sources cite reality-show ‘Big Brother’ as the first multi-platform television-based project ever. It premiered on the verge of a new millennium, in 2001, and though it is hard to say was it the pioneer in the Interactive TV distribution on several platforms actually, its multi-platform concept has never been placed in question: Big Brother aired on TV, Internet and radio. And during the Australian Open in 2012 producer Yahoo!7 (local division of Yahoo!) used mobile app, which allowed viewers to access program-related polls and suggest questions for commentator to ask players in post-match interviews.

If you watch TV using set-top-box from the MSOs or, for example, you own a TiVo – it should be also con- sidered as some kind of interactive television. Although you have no opportunity to influence any show results, it is possible to pause live broadcast, skip ads, watch catch-up TV and get access to special epi- sodes etc. That is definitely beyond the traditional television.

But in this article we would like to list the ‘most interactive’ formats and shows, where TV and/or Internet audience can influence the storyline or participate along with the ‘real’ players. For convenience they are all sorted by country of origin.

USA

‘Big Brother’ is one of US interactive shows, as also could have been ‘The Million Second Quiz’, mentioned in our article on Upfronts 2013. It still may become an interactive in case someone would like to follow the original idea of the show.

‘The Million Second Quiz’ was a game show aired on NBC in 2013 (the first episode premiered on Sep- tember 9). It follows a group of contestants who compete for up to $2 million in a quiz competition across 1,000,000 seconds (or 11 days, 13 hours, 46 minutes, and 40 seconds) sitting in huge hourglass-shaped structure in midtown Manhattan near the entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel, on the roof of a building that was formerly occupied by the ‘Mercedes-Benz of Manhattan’ dealership in Hell’s Kitchen.

Hosted by Ryan Seacrest the show was produced by All3Media America, US division of production and distribution group All3Media. NBC aired one-hour segments each day (except Sunday the 15th, and the finale was two hours), while the rest of the show was viewable from within the ‘Million Second Quiz’ app, available on iOS and Android devices, and on NBC.com.

It was thought that the questions would be asked by online-players thus making it possible to replace un- lucky contestants in the show. But this idea did not get any further than the development stage – Seacrest was the one who asked – and Internet audience got the quiz app instead. It had no connection with the TV show except its concept of winning money in a question-answer battle with other players. Maybe there would be some interaction later, but ratings went down over time and show ended after the first season.

The one real interactive was the ‘PlayMania’ game show aired in 2006-2007 on Game Show Network (GSN). The two-hour program featured interactive games that the home viewers could play to win cash prizes. First of all they had to send SMS or register on the show website. Within a few moments, a contest-

ant was notified whether or not his or her entry had been chosen (at random, by computer) to proceed further. The contestant would then be called on his or her home or mobile phone, and play on-air. After the game was completed, the queue was cleared, and any entrants who wished to play the next game were required to re-enter.

‘PlayMania’ was produced in-house by Game Show Network, and in February 2007 it was replaced with two separate programs, ‘Quiznation’ and ‘100 Winners’ which were collectively known as the ‘PlayMania Block’. Still, the idea of interactivity hadn’t changed at all.

In April 2014 Fox ordered a local version of Israeli quiz show ‘Boom!’ being shopped on MIPTV by Keshet DCP, the joint venture between Keshet International, the division of production and distribution group Ke- shet Media, and DC Media, which owns dick clark productions.

PlayMania Part action movie and part traditional quiz show, Boom! pits four contestants racing against the clock to diffuse replica bombs by answering trivia questions. Each player cuts through coloured wires that repre- sent multiple choice answers, while viewers at home can play along with a chance to win the opportunity to say what wire to choose. If the bomb explodes the contestant is eliminated and the team loses ¼ of potential sum of money.

It should be mentioned that France’s TF1 has already bought the Boom! during MIPFormats 2014.

Belgium-Sweden-Germany-France-Netherlands- Norway-Finland-Denmark

In 2012 European broadcasters – Arte (France and Germany), VRT (Belgium), Vara (The Netherlands), SVT (Sweden), NRK (Norway) YLE, (Finland) and TV3 Denmark – partnered with the Swedish prodco The company P and Belgian Caviar Films to create a Pan-European interactive format ‘The Spiral’, that com- bines traditional storytelling with gaming, online communities and audience involvement.

The five-part drama series follows an equally international group of artists in Copenhagen who get en- tangled in a crime investigation after they decide to steal six major paintings simultaneously into six differ- The Spiral’ cast ent euro museums. Audiences in all participating territories were able to discover the characters and the story through thespiral.eu website and both game and community designed to enhance the story world of ‘The Spiral’. And they also could contribute to the creation of a collaborative virtual work and make their proposals for the show.

‘The Spiral’ premiered in 2012 and apart from aforementioned countries also aired in Austria and the Ger- man speaking region of Switzerland. According to the latest data available there is the second season in development.

It is worth noting that Christopher Sandberg, the CEO and Chief Creative Officer at The company P, is working on another interactive show ‘Treasures’ with the European Broadcasting Union, Shaftesbury and MediaXchange as partners.

‘Treasures’ is set in present day Europe and executed throughout the world, with the fantastic adventures of an international treasure hunt just around the corner. The main characters start out as normal young adults, and then everything changes as they begin exploring uncharted areas on online maps.

UK

‘The Bank Job’ was a game show broadcast live on Channel 4 in January-March 2012. Four contestants answered questions to open a giant safe vaults in which several hundreds of thousands pounds had been randomly distributed. They had a limited time, although the clock was stopped after each correct answer to a question.

‘The Bank Job’ was not interactive itself, but if was launched first as an online game rather than a TV show, in December 2011, and it was the only way a contestant could apply for the live TV version: they had to play to unlock the application form and score as a grand master before qualifying as a potential contestant. The show was produced by Remarkable Television.

In May 2013 Microsoft launched ‘The Music Room’, an interactive TV series on Xbox Live. The programme (2x60’) was dedicated to British musical indie groups with special guests from the Libertines, Everything Everything, Don Broco and Swim Deep. Viewers were able to get in on the action by selecting from a list of options to determine what course the show will take, and what they would like to see and listen to in the finale.

Offered to Gold subscribers and hosted by Laura Jackson ‘The Music Room’ was produced by UK prodco Alaska.

Finland

In December 2006 – January 2007 YLE’s TV1 channel aired interactive musical comedy series ‘Accidental Lovers’ (‘Sydän kierroksella’ in the original). Peculiarity is that viewers could affect the love relationship between the main characters – 61-year-old cabaret singer Juulia and 30-year-old pop star Roope – by simply sending mobile text messages, which other one of the main characters think a voiceover thought at the same time when the message appears on screen. Each message had a ‘cold’ or ‘hot’ effect caus- ing the character’s feelings to cool off or warm up. As this message information accumulates the plot changes it turns. Either Juulia or Roope falls in love or they both fall in love, resulting in a relationship that has three different kinds of endings.

Accidental Lovers was a co-production of YLE drama department and Crucible Studio in Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture.

Denmark

In September 1990 the Danish company Interactive Television Entertainment (ITE, formerly known as Sil- verRock Productions) developed, produced and presented a ‘Hugo the TV Troll’ show (‘Tv-Trolden Hugo’ in the original). It was an idea of Ivan Sølvason, the founder of ITE.

Hugo the TV Troll was an interactive programme based on the fictional character of Hugo, a friendly, small Scandinavian folklore troll fighting against evil villains. The custom-built computer hardware system con- verted telephone signals to remotely control the characters in the game and allow the interaction of the audience and the TV action without any delay.

Ukraine

Within the framework of MIPTV 2014 RostGroup presented a game show called ‘The 7th SENSE’. It gives the TV audience an opportunity to play together with the contestants in the Studio, trying to win $1 million. There are three studio players and unlimited online players team, who have to answer different questions using their intuition rather than intelligence.

‘The 7th SENSE’ works on the SINCE cross-media platform, developed in-house by RostGroup. SINCE al- lows players from all over the world to take part in the game show, monitor and influence the results during the live broadcast just by means of PC or any mobile device with iOS operating system.

Announced in August 2013 the SINCE platform has passed through the technical test and approbation in Davos (Switzerland) on a Global level.

Afterword

An interactive TV issue was brought long ago as the Danish project ‘Hugo’ had been in development in 1980s already. The broadcasters and prodcos do really want to create projects where TV- and Internet users are able to participate in game shows, play along with the ‘real’ players in studio. But that does not happen too often, as it is easier – technologically and financially – to merely add SMS voting, than to de- velop a whole new platform for interaction with the viewer.

Nevertheless the technical progress leads to a stronger interrelation between the TV and Internet (social media in particular), offering new opportunities for format-developers, and under that logic it will be much more new interactive shows in the near future.

News about Uzbekistan film industry are rather rare today, so in an attempt to find out about its structure and state, CIS: Content Report editorial team turned to Elmira Khasanova, the member of Uzbekkino Interview National Agency expert committee. She told about the Uzbekfilm Studio production base, situation in the private sector, production volumes and film distribution market.

How do you find the development level of film production in Uzbekistan? How many state film studios are there and what facilities and equipment do they have (sound stages, post-sync and Elmira Khasanova: editing rooms, etc.)? Uzbek films attract three I don’t want to declaim, but the level is pretty high. Today the director may choose will he or she use the film or digital camera, Arriflex or RED. However, frankly speaking, we can’t shoot in 3D and create ‘cool’ special effects.

Are there any large private film studios? Are they better equipped than the state ones?

There are about 100 private studios in Uzbekistan. Note that we do not use the term ‘film production companies’ because they are exactly the studios with both small staff and production base: one has a good camera, the other – a powerful crane, the third one provides with the good post-production ser- vices. Therefore, they just rent the equipment to each other. Still, there is one big studio – Bairam, used by foreign producers to shoot films or TV series on the territory of Uzbekistan. But the production base of Uzbekfilm is larger than of any private studio.

How often do the private producers enter a co-production agreement with the state studios? What services do they provide with?

Private producers make small-budget films for the local audience, and sometimes Mir TV channel airs them. But such films are made in a short time and I don’t remember any deals between the state and pri- vate studios. The latter just do not need it at all.

What is the ratio between the films produced by the private and state studios? How many of them Elmira Khasanova received the state support?

There were 58 films cinema releases in 2013 – 15 of them produced by the state studios and 43 by the private producers. Usually the state commissions several animated and 3-5 feature films from the private studios, therefore they get support.

Tell us more about the award-winning films.

Within the last three years several Uzbek films became the winners of the international film festivals. Elkin Tuychiev’s ‘P.S.’ (original name ‘Post Scriptum’ ) took the Grand Prix of the Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinema (France) and the Grand Prix of the Open Film Festival of CIS countries, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia ‘Kinoshock’ went to ‘Parizod’ from Ayub Shaxobiddinov. At the same time Jahongir Kasymov’s ‘A Water Campaign’ and Sabir Nazarmuhamedov’s ‘On the Riverbank Where Childhood Was Left’ were mentioned on the festivals in New York, Sao Paolo and Yerevan. Can’t remember all of them, actually.

What about the terms and procedure of receiving the state aid? Are the state studios given any precedence? How the budget is allocated?

As for the allocation of funds, it is the task of Uzbekkino. It supports those films and scripts that had been previously approved by the board of directors, scriptwriters and film experts. Mainly these funds go to the state studios, but as I mentioned before, there are always some projects from the private producers.

Do the state and private studios act as co-producers in the international projects?

Unfortunately, there have been no such projects in the last few years.

How do the TV channels cooperate with the studios and distribution companies?

Feature and animated films produced by the state studios are included into channels’ catalogues free of charge. That’s why it is very difficult for the private studios to survive – the only way to cover their expenses is to distribute films in the cinema. They transfer TV rights for free or in exchange for commercial airtime.

Who owns the rights of the film produced with the state support? How local and foreign producers can protect their rights in Uzbekistan? Is there any legislative framework? What about the pirated content distribution?

Piracy is a plague of our time, and Uzbekistan is no exception. Sometimes the film has just been released in cinema and it is already available on the bootleg DVDs. There is a Guild of Authors and Performers, but Jahongir Kasymov I can’t provide you with any details on their work...

Are local film theatres and TV channels interested in the national movies distribution?

Unlikely to other CIS countries the Uzbeks love to watch locally produced films. There are modern theatres demonstrating new Hollywood films in 3D, but Uzbek films attract three times more viewers. These are comedies and rom-coms, a-la Bollywood films with a tenuous plot and a small budget, but... Uzbeks really like them. Therefore, we have no quota issue and no need to stimulate the national film production market.

How many film theatres are there and who owns them? What is the number of screens and how many of them are digital?

There are several multiplexes in Tashkent and about 160 one-screen theatres, almost all of which are held by the municipal administrations. 300-500 seats on the average. No more than 20 theatres are digitalized.

Which governmental body issues a film distribution certificate? What language do the theatres use to demonstrate films? What is the ratio between US, European, Russian and national films? Tell us about box-office and the ticket cost.

The distribution certificate is given by Uzbekkino. Foreign films are shown in Russian, and national – in Uzbek, and you have to pay $5-6 and $1.5 for one ticket correspondingly. Altogether, theatres distribute 60-70 Uzbek and 30-40 foreign films a year. As for the box-office, I have no information.

How the distribution companies work on the territory of Uzbekistan?

As for Uzbek films the distribution rights belong to the production studio itself, so the share with the cin- ema theaters is divided 50/50. The foreign films are distributed by the private companies, which work through the Russian intermediaries.

What are the current projects of Uzbekfilm?

Uzbekfilm makes serious films and it is difficult to compete with those shot by the private studios, but still, a lot of famous directors work here – soon Uzbekfilm will release ‘Zarb’ from Nazim Tulikhodjayev, ‘Uncle’ from Rashid Malikov and ‘Well’ from Mansur Abdukhalikov... Father and son Shuxrat and Nazim Abbasov are working on some kind of sequel to the legendary film ‘The Talk of the Neighborhood’/‘The Whole Ma- halla is Talking about It’.
