Like something straight out of “The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde”, singer Vincent Furnier surrendered to the domination of showman Alice Cooper. But by his own admission, the man who always speaks of “Alice” in the third person in interviews remains a simple, completely normal guy in private, far from the stage where he enacts his excesses and provocations. Throughout a career stretching over 50 years, there is an evident streak of schizophrenia in his many stylistic changes. While we credit him with the invention of shock rock, he has ventured into almost every genre with varying degrees of success, from pop to nascent hard rock, with forays into heavy metal, new wave and industrial… As the birthplace of an ever-increasing number of metal groups, Sweden proved their worth internationally in the early 90s when a dynamic crowd of metalheads burst onto the scene. We look back in time to understand how Swedish death metal developed and what made it so original. With 50 million copies sold, Back in Black is the second best-selling album of all time just behind Michael Jackson’s thriller. Who could have imagined that AC/DC’s seventh studio album would pick up so many awards considering their charismatic lead-singer Bon Scott’s premature death after the release of Highway to Hell. The album marked the end of their first chapter but the beginning of their second which fans of the Australian band today continue to relish… While She Sleeps You Are We. *EDIT* I lowered my score for this, as I feel it's not as strong as their previous releases, although I still think it's a very good album. Before I get any comments saying I've given this album no time, I had early access to it and I've been listening to it for a month. With that out the way, I hope you enjoy. I remember when I first discovered While She Sleeps, their first CD, 'The North Stands For Nothing' was taped to the front cover of an issue of in the summer of 2010, and I absolutely bloody loved it. Little did I know I was an early subscriber to one of the best bands in the UK heavy music scene. Seven years on and three full lengths later, I'm still just as big a fan, and their latest effort encapsulates me just as much as their first. When you're in a band and you come from a place like , you've got a lot to live up to. Massive bands have been pouring out of the steel city for decades, from Def Leppard to Bring Me The Horizon to Arctic Monkeys. While She Sleeps live up to that resume, and deserve to be on the front page of it, underlined, maybe even in bold, if you are so inclined. I can easily see this band leaving behind a legacy like the aforementioned artists, and this album will definitely help build that. This album is a perfect example of a band simultaneously progressing and returning to their roots. While She Sleeps have always been an outstanding band on an instrumental front, with the majority of tracks here featuring some of the gnarliest riffs and breakdowns I've heard this year, as well as beautiful, soaring, melodic lead segments provided by Matt Welsh and Sean Long on guitar. Whilst having jam packed riff segments with eccentric drum fills, the band create some wonderfully spacious moments during choruses and some instrumental parts, which can be just as effective as making you lose your ***ing mind as any breakdown can. I think this is best heard during Empire of Silence, the fourth track on the record. It's really hard to fault the production on this, everything is clear and crisp, the guitars sound heavy and bright, the bass hits like Conor McGregor and the drums are tight and deep. Innuendo unintended. Matt Welsh's unique and gritty clean vocals are a more frequent occurrence on these tracks than they were on 2015's Brainwashed, and they are a very welcome addition. Having two voices frequently present provides a brilliant duality to the bands sound, with Loz Taylor's definitive harsh vocals uniting perfectly with Welsh to create some fantastic group chorus moments. There's a lot of points on this album that sound purposely crafted to have massive crowds them back at the band, which creates a stellar atmosphere when listening. That's not to say this sounds manufactured, far from it, but if you've ever been to a While She Sleeps show you'll know they're no standard affair. While She Sleeps are true showmen and the crowds reflect that in the energy created by the band's performance. If you've never been to a While She Sleeps show, get your act together. Lyrically the band does what they do best, and that is emotionally charged, passionate and often outraged insights into politics, society, war, corruption and introspection. This is, simply put, a very angry and political album. I think this is what While She Sleeps fans want, and I think While She Sleeps know that. Sleeps have always been very receptive of their fans and frequently express their gratitude to their fan base, and this album likely serves as a love letter of sorts to the fans. It's refreshing to see such humility and appreciation for what is essentially the driving force of a band. Watch and learn, Suicide Silence. There's not a dull moment on this entire thing. If you're a fan of heavy music, which I assume you are, I know you, Sputnik, you owe it to yourself to listen to this album. If you're a While She Sleeps fan, this album will feel like a homecoming. You Are We is a massive stride forward for a band that are already miles ahead of the pack. This is an exciting time to be engaged in heavy music coming from the UK, and with this record, While She Sleeps solidify themselves as a flagship name for British music. Make no mistake, they're well on their way to being one of the biggest names in the history of metalcore. Personal favourites for me are Hurricane, Revolt (which is a titan of a track) and Silence Speaks, which includes a verse from Oli Sykes of Bring Me The Horizon. This album gets a 5/5 from me, what a phenomenal band. Album Review: You Are We by While She Sleeps. It’s finally here! Our first taste of an independent While She Sleeps . You Are We was written, recorded and produced without the shackles of a clamped around the lads from Sheffield. I don’t know what you lot were expecting, but it’s While She Sleeps . They could record an album off a portable recorder and an early Macintosh and it would still be incredible. You Are We could be the bands finest material to date. I have spoken before about the bands ability to riff with the best. The titular track is heavy on atmosphere during the intro but opens up to allow guitarist Sean Long to melodically riff over the build up. Then the While She Sleeps bounce erupts. It is an infectious groove that really gets you moving. Sean and rhythm guitarist Mat Welsh just have this knack for riffing. They can go from these big heavy riffs, to huge sweeping choruses with ease. While She Sleeps have always had a beautiful ability to make music that sounds technical yet is wonderfully simplistic. There are plenty of tapping fills and speedy licks to split the calm and frantic together nicely. Steal The Sun and Wide Awake are full of chugs but it never gets old or boring. Sean and Mat are great guitarists, they know how to get a riff stuck in your head and when to give you a little bit of a lick. Of course the choruses are seeping in that catchy gang chanting that we have come to know and love from the band. It wouldn’t be a While She Sleeps album without this aspect. You can really sink your teeth into the meat of Empire of Silence and the united sound of the chorus. You’ll be singing along in absolutely no time. Loz Taylor’s vocals are on point. Less gruff and more clear cut. There is more of melody to his voice. He nails the soft intro to Hurricane but can still incite some serious anger in the likes of Revolt . Silence Speaks is heavy on the melodic leanings. I wouldn’t call it calming as it is spliced against some pretty aggressive bridges. The appearance of Oli Sykes was a pleasant surprise as well. The Bring Me The Horizon vocalist really sits well with the band. His vocal style compliments While She Sleeps brand of metal as he brings a little bit of Sempiternal and of course his game with him . All the riffs are boosted by some deep bass lines and jump inducing drums. From the depths of bass thickness comes Aaran McKenzie ready to punch in ear catching twangs. There is definitely a calmer element to the album. The more melodic parts and softer sections means Aaran can really bridge the gap when it is needed. This really shines through in the middle section of Settle Down Society. Oh and how can I miss the breakdown in Civil Isolation. The bass tones beefs up the already ludicrously heavy sound of the song. Civil Isolation is still the highlight of the album for me. When all the members collide to create this insanely heavy sound that is less of a breakdown and more of musical beating. Drummer Adam “Sav” Savage brings the crashing rhythmical beats down on listeners. True head banging and body moving music. How While She Sleeps managed to cram so much into a single song is unreal. You Are We is a serious contender for album of the year. While She Sleeps continues to show off the very best of modern metal/metalcore. The album is full to the brim with of the wall riffs, catchy chants and moshing opportunities to cause anyone’s hair to stand on end. It is a masterpiece! Hell, I’m still getting chills listening to it several playthroughs later.
