Visitors are fascinated that Barn Owlsʹ (Tyto alba) live and breed at Chesworth Farm. In fact regulars often exchange stories between those who constantly miss them, and others especially visitors on a dawn or dusk walk - who apparently spot them regularly. Many are surprised that such an uncommon owl is found so close to the busy conurbation of Horsham.sŝƐŝƚŽƌƐƚŽƚŚĞƐŝƚĞ͛ƐsŽůƵŶƚĞĞƌĞŶƚƌĞĐĂŶƐĞĞĚĞƉŽƐŝƚƐƐŚŽǁŝŶŐƚŚĂƚƚŚĞ It is true to say that these birds are faring well in this busy countryside site. yard rafters are a regular roosting spot. Clean, white droppings drift down the walls and large dark pellets of indigestible fur and bones litter the floor beneath favoured perches. A recent, licensed task to replace the old, battered nest box in one of the fields provided a surprise find: a roosting owl. He was weighed, measured and ringed with a British Trust for Ornithology ring. This data showed him toʹ be in good healthʹ and of average to good size for a male bird in winter. And within the last month, investigation of just two of the regurgitated pellets showed the skulls of seven small mammals probably voles along with lower jaws, scapulars and femurs. Prey finds like this prove the quality of the conservation management undertaken at Chesworth Farm. 14 ² ²

One day a man who had never been to Open House before was looking at the noticeboard outside COGS, and one of our helpers suggested he might come in, which he did, and has since brought his wife along. On his first visit he mentioned he wanted a puppy; co-incidentally the lovely Margo had just produced a litter of 4 puppies. Well, the rest is history: one of the puppies, Ember, found a loving home in Mannings Heath, and is still a regular visitor to Open House, along with her mum - Margo. Over the years we have become firm friends, and now often swap magazines and sometimes plants. Conversations about the countryside, our gardens and the birds and animals we see are commonplace. ʹ ʹ We also spend a lot of time putting the world to rights: discussing tv programmes, driving, our neighbours, politics national and local and whatever else might come up on the day. We also organise a Strawberry Tea in June, and a Christmas Lunch every year. nd Our Open House is alwaysth at COGS in Church Road, Mannings Heath.
