  • Elie Assis the Samson Narrative Is Unique in the Book of Judge
THE STRUCTURE AND MEANING OF THE SAMSON NARRATIVES (Jud. 13–16) Elie Assis The Samson narrative is unique in the Book of Judges (Zakovitch 2005). The narrative does not fall naturally into the general framework of the book (McKenzie 1966). In contrast to its other narratives, Samson does not appear as a response to Israel’s cry to God, and he does not deliver Israel from the hands of the Philistines. This, in fact, was not his inten- tion. His confrontations with the Philistines are the outcome of his own personal machinations. The most enigmatic aspects of the narrative are his enormous strength and his weakness for women. His physical abilities are prodigious and superhuman. No man was to defeat him and his downfall was his own doing, because he revealed the secret of his strength to Delilah. This unique strength is connected with another anomaly. As a Nazarite, Sam- son is prohibited from cutting his hair. But later in the story it emerges that his strength is dependent on his hair, and when he is seduced to reveal his secret, and his hair is cut off, he immediately loses his extraor- dinary power. The dominant theme of the story is Samson’s obsession with women, which is described repeatedly and in detail throughout the narrative (Exum 1993). He goes from one woman to another. Though his parents tried to dissuade him from marrying a Philistine, he insists on following his own instincts. When his efforts to unite with his Philistine wife fail, he finds relief in the arms of a Philistine prostitute.

BAKER Submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies Texas A&M University-Commerce in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2017 COSTUME CULTURE: VISUAL RHETORIC, ICONOGRAPHY, AND TOKENISM IN COMIC BOOKS A Dissertation by MICHAEL G. BAKER Submitted to: Advisor: Christopher Gonzalez Committee: Tabetha Adkins Donna Dunbar-Odom Mike Odom Head of Department: M. Hunter Hayes Dean of the College: Salvatore Attardo Interim Dean of Graduate Studies: Mary Beth Sampson iii Copyright © 2017 Michael G. Baker iv ABSTRACT COSTUME CULTURE: VISUAL RHETORIC, ICONOGRAPHY, AND TOKENISM IN COMIC BOOKS Michael G. Baker, PhD Texas A&M University-Commerce, 2017 Advisor: Christopher Gonzalez, PhD Superhero comic books provide a unique perspective on marginalized characters not only as objects of literary study, but also as opportunities for rhetorical analysis. There are representations of race, gender, sexuality, and identity in the costuming of superheroes that impact how the audience perceives the characters. Because of the association between iconography and identity, the superhero costume becomes linked with the superhero persona (for example the Superman “S” logo is a stand-in for the character). However, when iconography is affected by issues of tokenism, the rhetorical message associated with the symbol becomes more difficult to decode. Since comic books are sales-oriented and have a plethora of tie-in merchandise, the iconography in these symbols has commodified implications for those who choose to interact with them. When consumers costume themselves with the visual rhetoric associated with comic superheroes, the wearers engage in a rhetorical discussion where they perpetuate whatever message the audience places on that image.

  • NATO Feb 05 NL.Indd
February 2005 NANATOTO of California/NevadaCalifornia/Nevada Information for the California and Nevada Motion Picture Theatre Industry THE CALIFORNIA POPCORN TAX CALENDAR By Duane Sharpe, Hutchinson and Bloodgood LLP of EVENTS & The California State Board of Equalization (the Board) recently issued an Opinion on a refund HOLIDAYS of sales tax to a local theatre chain (hereafter, the Theatre). The detail of the refund wasn’t discussed in the opinion, but the Board did focus on two specifi c issues that affected the refund. February 6 California tax law requires the assessment of sales tax on the sale of all food products when sold Super Bowl Sunday for consumption within a place that charges admission. The Board noted that in all but one loca- tion, the Theatre had changed their operations regarding admissions to its theatre buildings. Instead February 12 of requiring customers to fi rst purchase tickets to enter into the theatre building lobby in which all Lincoln’s Birthday food and drinks were sold, the Theatre opened each lobby to the general public without requiring tickets. The Theatre only required tickets for the customers to enter further into the inside movie February 14 viewing areas of the theatres. This admission policy allowed the Theatre not to charge sales tax on Valentine’s Day “popcorn sales.” California tax law requires the assessment of sales tax on the sale of “hot prepared food products.” The issue before the Board was whether the popcorn sold by the Theatre was a hot February 21 prepared food product. President’s Day From the Opinion: “Claimant’s process for making popcorn starts with a popper.

  • Twisted Trails of the Wold West by Matthew Baugh © 2006
Twisted Trails of the Wold West By Matthew Baugh © 2006 The Old West was an interesting place, and even more so in the Wold- Newton Universe. Until fairly recently only a few of the heroes and villains who inhabited the early western United States had been confirmed through crossover stories as existing in the WNU. Several comic book miniseries have done a lot to change this, and though there are some problems fitting each into the tapestry of the WNU, it has been worth the effort. Marvel Comics’ miniseries, Rawhide Kid: Slap Leather was a humorous storyline, parodying the Kid’s established image and lampooning westerns in general. It is best known for ‘outing’ the Kid as a homosexual. While that assertion remains an open issue with fans, it isn’t what causes the problems with incorporating the story into the WNU. What is of more concern are the blatant anachronisms and impossibilities the story offers. We can accept it, but only with the caveat that some of the details have been distorted for comic effect. When the Rawhide Kid is established as a character in the Wold-Newton Universe he provides links to a number of other western characters, both from the Marvel Universe and from classic western novels and movies. It draws in the Marvel Comics series’ Blaze of Glory, Apache Skies, and Sunset Riders as wall as DC Comics’ The Kents. As with most Marvel and DC characters there is the problem with bringing in the mammoth superhero continuities of the Marvel and DC universes, though this is not insurmountable.

  • How to Draw Superman Logo
How to Draw Superman Logo Easy Fast "Look! Up in thee sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's Superman!" Those words are well known to superhero fans around the world. Since his debut in DC's Action Comics #1 in 1938, Superman has perhaps become the world's best loved superhero. Sometimes called "the big blue boy scout," this American icon is known for always doing the right thing and making sacrifices to save people in danger. He appeared in print and radio media at a time when the American people longed for a hero - they were in the midst of the Great Depression and soon to be drawn into the war that was raging in Europe. Superman is an "every man" - he is an orphan, a refugee, a poor boy from the country, and a blue collar worker trying to make it in the big city. Superman was sent away from the planet Krypton, which was destroyed by the greed of the people who inhabited it. Superman derives his powers from the Earth's bright sun and disguises himself as "mild mannered Clark Kent, reporter for the Daily Planet." His iconic logo has been said to be the shield of the House of El, his biological family on his home world. Other works have said that the "S" shape stands for "Superman" or for hope in the language of Krypton. Whatever the meaning of this piece of pop art history, you can draw your very own Superman logo. All you need is a piece of paper and something with which to draw.
