Ball The English seventh-day movement, as it began to emerge early in the seventeenth century, did so within the context of history. The Seventh-day Men, as English Sabbatarians were often known in their day, contended that the seventh day of the week had been observed both in England and on the Continent at various periods in the Church’s history. One of them, Thomas Bampfield, a lawyer, even argued that the seventh day had been kept in England in unbroken succession until the thirteenth century, and that there had been no law for the observance of Sunday until the time of Edward VI.2 Most advocates of the seventh day, however, were content to point to antecedents in the early Church, in medieval and contemporary Europe, or in parts of what is now North Africa, particularly Ethiopia. -

The Contributions of Theophilus Brabourne to Our Understanding of the Sabbath Nikolaus Satelmajer Ministerial Association General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists Theophilus Brabourne1 was an English minister who wrote extensively on the Sabbath2 during the 1600's.3 A well-known writer on the Sabbath issue in England, Bryan W. Ball, writes that Brabourne's book Discourse vpon the Sab- bath Day (1628) was "the first major work to appear in the seventeenth century advocating the Christian observance of Saturday."4 The purpose of this paper is to provide a brief introduction to the life of Brabourne, an introduction to his writings5 on the Sabbath issue, and a discus- 1 Brabourne most often used this spelling for his name, although several variations exist. Ball The Seventh-day Sabbatarian movement during the post-Restoration years, like English Nonconformity in general, found itself on the defensive and running for cover. In February 1668, Edward Stennett, patriarch of the prominent Stennett family, wrote from Abingdon, then in Berkshire, to the fledgling Sabbatarian church in Newport, Rhode Island, of the difficulties Sabbatarians in England were experiencing. “We have passed through great opposition, for this truth’s sake”, he wrote, adding “Many once eminent churches have been shattered in pieces”.2 A month later the church in Bell Lane, London, also wrote to Newport in similar vein. -
