Baptist M.P.'S in the Sixteenth and Eighteenth Centuries
Baptist M.Pes in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries HE primary purpose of this article is not to give full studies or T even biographical outlines of early Baptist M.P.s, but rather to attempt to identify which M.P.s were Baptists. 1 Accordingly the chief detail in the lists of M.P.s at the end refers to their religious allegiance. Each entry includes a man's dates of birth and death, where known; a list of the occasions on which he sat in parliament; a few general biographical data; an assessment of the evidence for his Baptist convictions; and often reference to a place where fuller information on his career may be found. The entries are arranged in two lists for each century. The main list includes those who were certainly or probably Baptists. The supplementary list includes those who were certainly not Baptists (although they have previously been supposed to· be) and those who were probably not Baptists. The criteria for determining who is and who is not a Baptist are notoriously problematic in our own day. How do we classify an unbaptized member of an open-membership Baptist church? What do we call someone who has been baptized as a believer in a Baptist church but worships elsewhere? The problem is aggravated for the seventeenth century by the fluidity of denominational identity. Churches were often still moving towards a Baptist position. Indi viduals might change their convictions, especially in the 1650s, with bewildering frequency. In consequence the attempt to decide which M.P.s should be called Baptists verges on treating men anachronistic ally. -

Younger son Lord Chancellor 1618, created a viscount 1621. Eight further MPs in the 16th and 17th centuries, including kts of the shire for Norfolk and Suffolk. -

The Earl of Essex’s chaplain: Rev. Abdias Assheton Anne Falloon, Middleton Archaeological Society 1 Introduction Abdias Assheton (1563-1633) was a member of Middleton’s manorial family who rose to some prominence in the final years of Elizabeth I’s reign. A Protestant with strong Puritan leanings, as an academic and preacher he sought all his answers not from centuries old tradition as his Catholic forebears had done, but directly from a deep reading of the bible. In the 1590’s his approach to thinking through religious and moral choices using scripture attracted the attention of the greatest man in England. This is the story of the controversial relationship between Essex and the influential chaplain he called his ‘little man’, Abdias Assheton. 2 The Asshetons and religion In the mid 16th century, members of the Assheton 1 family were faced with the decision everyone in the country had to consider: to accept the new state religion or adhere to the old one. There were costs attached to remaining faithful. Staunch Catholics felt they were risking their souls without the rituals of confessing to a priest and receiving the actual body and blood of Christ. As the century progressed, there were increasing worldly costs of not conforming in Elizabeth’s England. Catholic recusants who refused to attend church or take communion were heavily fined. Noble and gentry families could afford to pay, but only the wealthiest were able to continue losing income indefinitely. The majority of people opted for safety: committed Anglican Protestants conformed with enthusiasm, but others, the Calvinists and Puritans, were still nursing the ambition of purifying the English church still further. -

Those who want solid information on the historical Jesus are far better off turning to Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John, no matter how "naive" it might be to do so. Macon, GA: Mercer University Press, 1989. viii + 184 pp. Hardcover, $24.95; paperback, $16.95. Since the 1960s there has been a flurry of new interest in the phenomenon of English Sabbatarianism. Articles by Patrick Collinson, Herbert Richardson, Winton Solberg, Richard Greaves, and books by James T. Dennison, Kenneth L. Parker, witness to this. John H. Primus describes his contribution to this discussion as "a re-examination of the relationship between the emerging Puritan movement and the phenomenon of Sabbata- rianism" in order to shed "additional light on the complex dynamics of the sixteenth-century Church of England" (vii). In his research he responds to current discussions and especially to Parker, who has "reopened the fundamental question of the origin of Sabbatarianism and its relationship to Puritanism" (2, 3). Holy Time is not intended exclusively for specialists in Tudor Puritanism. For this reason, Primus includes very helpful contextual and explanatory paragraphs on events already known to experts (vii). Part 1 is a brief historical sketch that highlights certain emphases which Parker tends to overlook. Chap. 1 describes the high Sabbath views in England already evident in the early Reformation. By the end of the sixteenth century "Sabbatarianism had become the linchpin in the Puritan program for more complete reform in England" (17), with one of its distinguishing characteristics being "the divine appointment of Sunday as the new day of rest" (20). -

The Origins of Millerite Separatism By Andrew Taylor (BA in History, Aurora University and MA in History, University of Rhode Island) CHAPTER 1 HISTORIANS AND MILLERITE SEPARATISM ===================================== Early in 1841, Truman Hendryx moved to Bradford, Pennsylvania, where he quickly grew alienated from his local church. Upon settling down in his new home, Hendryx attended several services in his new community’s Baptist church. After only a handful of visits, though, he became convinced that the church did not believe in what he referred to as “Bible religion.” Its “impiety” led him to lament, “I sometimes almost feel to use the language [of] the Prophecy ‘Lord, they have killed thy prophets and digged [sic] down thine [sic] altars and I only am left alone and they seek my life.”’1 His opposition to the church left him isolated in his community, but his fear of “degeneracy in the churches and ministers” was greater than his loneliness. Self-righteously believing that his beliefs were the “Bible truth,” he resolved to remain apart from the Baptist church rather than attend and be corrupted by its “sinful” influence.2 The “sinful” church from which Hendryx separated himself was characteristic of mainstream antebellum evangelicalism. The tumultuous first decades of the nineteenth century had transformed the theological and institutional foundations of mainstream American Protestantism. During the colonial era, American Protestantism had been dominated by the Congregational, Presbyterian, and Anglican churches, which, for the most part, had remained committed to the theology of John Calvin. In Calvinism, God was envisioned as all-powerful, having predetermined both the course of history and the eternal destiny of all humans. -
