I am grateful to the University of Sheffield, particularly the History Department, for the use of their facilities during my time as a post-graduate student there. Professor Anthony Fletcher has been constantly encouraging and supportive, as well as a great friend, since I began the research under his supervision. I am indebted to him for continuing to supervise my work even after he left Sheffield to take a Chair at Durham University. Following Anthony's departure from Sheffield, Professor Patrick Collinson and Dr Mark Greengrass kindly became my surrogate supervisors. Members of Sheffield History Department's Early Modern Seminar Group were a source of encouragement in the early days of my research.

It is, unfortunately, by no means adequate for this purpose ; many of the well-known forms referred to in the Introduction are not as yet represented. Mediaeval pieces are almost unobtainable ; but it is possible to find the productions of the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries. The collection waits for the munificence of donors who will enrich- it with such objects as a font-shaped cup and a ewer and dish of the sixteenth century ; a steeple-cup and punch- bowl of the seventeenth century; and fine pierced work of the eighteenth century. It needs fuller representation, too, of the rich work of Paul Lamerie and his contemporaries : the plain silver of the beginning of the eighteenth century is now repre- sented by Mr.

  • "The Famous Doctor Stearns"
1935.] The Famous Dr. Stearns 317 "THE FAMOUS DOCTOR STEARNS" A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF DR. SAMUEL STEARNS WITH A BIBLIOGRAPHY BY JOHN C. L. CLARK' ENJAMIN STEARNS and Dinah Wheeler were B married at Lancaster, in the Massachusetts Bay Province, 11 September, 1738, by the Rev. John Prentice. Benjamin was of Concord, as, too, was Dinah's father, Josiah Wheeler, who migrated to Lancaster about the end of the preceding century. Her mother was Martha Prescott, daughter of John Prescott, Jr., and granddaughter of the founder of Lancaster. The homestead whither Benjamin Stearns came to dwell with his wife's parents lay at the easterly base of Wataquadock Hill, in Bolton, which had been incorporated as a township, from Lancaster territory, in 1738. A path from the door led to the easterly bound "Bay Road"^ running a little to the north of the house. Besides carrying on the farm of a hundred and fifty acres, which his wife inherited from her father three months after their marriage, the husband made, and doubtless mended, shoes, for in deeds he is described as "cordwainer." In one document Mrs. Stearns is called "spinster,"—no meaningless epithet applied to this old-time housewife, among whose possessions when she died were "2 great Wooling Wheels."^ Plenty of wholesome work for the boys and girls born into this New England household! ^Mr. J.C.L. Clark, of Lancaster, Mass., who made a life study of Dr. Samuel Stearns, died at Lancaster, Sept. 6, 1036. «Middlesex Deeds, XXIII, 403. 'Worcester Probate Becords, Series A, Case 55621. 318 American Antiquarian Society [Oct., To the prudence and energy of old Josiah Wheeler his grandchildren owed the comfort, if not affluence, in which they grew to maturity.

  • Episcopal Tombs in Early Modern England
Jnl of Ecclesiastical History, Vol. 55, No. 4, October 2004. f 2004 Cambridge University Press 654 DOI: 10.1017/S0022046904001502 Printed in the United Kingdom Episcopal Tombs in Early Modern England by PETER SHERLOCK The Reformation simultaneously transformed the identity and role of bishops in the Church of England, and the function of monuments to the dead. This article considers the extent to which tombs of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century bishops represented a set of episcopal ideals distinct from those conveyed by the monuments of earlier bishops on the one hand and contemporary laity and clergy on the other. It argues that in death bishops were increasingly undifferentiated from other groups such as the gentry in the dress, posture, location and inscriptions of their monuments. As a result of the inherent tension between tradition and reform which surrounded both bishops and tombs, episcopal monuments were unsuccessful as a means of enhancing the status or preserving the memory and teachings of their subjects in the wake of the Reformation. etween 1400 and 1700, some 466 bishops held office in England and Wales, for anything from a few months to several decades.1 The B majority died peacefully in their beds, some fading into relative obscurity. Others, such as Richard Scrope, Thomas Cranmer and William Laud, were executed for treason or burned for heresy in one reign yet became revered as saints, heroes or martyrs in another. Throughout these three centuries bishops played key roles in the politics of both Church and PRO=Public Record Office; TNA=The National Archives I would like to thank Craig D’Alton, Felicity Heal, Clive Holmes, Ralph Houlbrooke, Judith Maltby, Keith Thomas and the anonymous reader for this JOURNAL for their comments on this article.

NEWS AND NOTES FROM The Prince George's County Historical Society Vol. VIII, no. 1 January 1980 The New Year's Program There will be no meetings of the Prince George's County Historical Society in January or February. The 1980 meeting program will begin with the March meeting on the second Saturday of that month. Public Forum on Historic Preservation The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission will sponsor a public forum on the future of historic preservation in Prince George's County on Thursday, January 10, at the Parks and Recreation Building, 6600 Kenilworth Avenue, in Riverdale. This forum, is the first step in the process of drafting a county Historic Sites and Districts Plan by the commission. (See next article). The purpose of the forum is to receive public testimony on historic preservation in Prince George's county. Among the questions to be addressed are these: How important should historic preservation, restoration, rehabilitation, and revitalization be to Prince George's County? What should the objectives and priorities of a historic sites and districts plan be? What should be the relative roles of County government and private enterprise be in historic preservation and restoration? To what extent should the destruction of historic landmarks be regulated and their restoration or preservation subsidized? How should historic preservation relate to tourism, economic development, and revitalization? Where should the responsibility rest for making determinations about the relative merits of preserving and restoring individual sites? Members of the Historical Society, as well as others interested in historic preservation and its impact on county life, are invited to attend and, if they like, to testify.
