Matt Mountain Director, Space Telescope Science Institute Testimony before the House Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee Committee on Science, Space and Technology September 12, 2012 Mr. Chairman and Members of the Subcommittee, thank you for the opportunity to testify about the scientific uses of NASA’s Space Launch System or SLS. Since the dawn of the space age, visionaries such as James Webb, the second NASA Administrator (who put the Agency on the path to land men on the Moon), realized space technologies could engage the scientific community and create new scientific capabilities. That partnership between science and NASA led to globally recognized icons of science such as the Hubble Space Telescope, and most recently the Curiosity Mars lander. The SLS has the potential to enable us to cost-effectively build the next generation of ambitious space telescopes and planetary probes. This will allow us to observe amazing phenomena that are well beyond the capabilities of the Hubble or James Webb Space Telescopes or our existing fleet of interplanetary spacecraft. Imagine being able to answer the question that stirs endless wonder across the millennia: "Are we alone?" The answer is now within reach. Imagine being able to observe weather on a habitable Earth-like planet orbiting a nearby star other than our Sun. Imagine being able to take a detailed picture of a black hole and see the cataclysmic fate of matter as it disappears into oblivion at the event horizon. Imagine returning samples of Martian soil back to Earth in a single mission for detailed analyses, or landing new generation of probes on far more distant bodies such as the icy moons of Jupiter or Saturn. -

This report provides a top level description of the status of various elements in the Gemini instrument program, and touches on some of the common problems the various teams building Gemini instruments are having. Despite these challenges, Gemini anticipates harvesting great scientific rewards from the combination of its Observatory facilities and exciting complement of scientific instruments. The University of California's David Julius won the award for life sciences and medicine for his "seminal discoveries" of how the skin senses pain and temperature, the organisers' statement said. "(Julius's) work has provided insights into fundamental mechanisms underlying the sense of touch as well as knowledge that opens the door to rational drug design for the treatment of chronic pain," the statement said. Princeton's Jean Bourgain won an award for his "profound work" in mathematical sciences, it said. The Shaw Prize, funded by Hong Kong film producer and philanthropist Run Run Shaw and first awarded in 2004, honours exceptional contributions "to the advancement of civilization and the well-being of humankind." The awards will be presented at a ceremony in Hong Kong on September 28. Founder's Biographical Note The Shaw Prize was established under the auspices of Mr Run Run Shaw. Mr Shaw, born in China in 1907, was a native of Ningbo County, Zhejiang Province. He joined his brother’s film company in China in the 1920s. During the 1950s he founded the film company Shaw Brothers (HK) Limited in Hong Kong. He was one of the founding members of Television Broadcasts Limited launched in Hong Kong in 1967. Hesiod (8th or 7th c. BC, composed in Greek) The Homeric epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, are probably slightly earlier than Hesiod’s two surviving poems, the Works and Days and the Theogony. Yet in many ways Hesiod is the more important author for the study of Greek mythology. While Homer treats cer- tain aspects of the saga of the Trojan War, he makes no attempt at treating myth more generally. He often includes short digressions and tantalizes us with hints of a broader tra- dition, but much of this remains obscure. Hesiod, by contrast, sought in his Theogony to give a connected account of the creation of the universe. For the study of myth he is im- portant precisely because his is the oldest surviving attempt to treat systematically the mythical tradition from the first gods down to the great heroes. Also unlike the legendary Homer, Hesiod is for us an historical figure and a real per- sonality. His Works and Days contains a great deal of autobiographical information, in- cluding his birthplace (Ascra in Boiotia), where his father had come from (Cyme in Asia Minor), and the name of his brother (Perses), with whom he had a dispute that was the inspiration for composing the Works and Days. His exact date cannot be determined with precision, but there is general agreement that he lived in the 8th century or perhaps the early 7th century BC. His life, therefore, was approximately contemporaneous with the beginning of alphabetic writing in the Greek world. Although we do not know whether Hesiod himself employed this new invention in composing his poems, we can be certain that it was soon used to record and pass them on. -

Heidegger on Heraclitus: Kosmos/World as Being Itself RICHARD CAPOBIANCO Stonehill College ABSTRACT: This essay draws on texts previously untranslated into English, and in particular Heidegger's brilliant 1943 lecture course on Heraclitus, to show how Hei degger understood kosmos as an early Greek name for Being itself (Sein selbst). The contemporary scholarship has altogether missed the significant role that this Greek Ur-word plays in his later thinking. The "gleaming;' "adorning" kosmos-which the later Heidegger understood to be "world" (Welt) in the fullest and richest sense-is not in the first place any kind of transcendental-phenomenological "projection" ofthe human being; rather, it is the resplendence of the "ever-living" Being-unfolding-way itself from out of which both the gods and human beings come to pass and pass away. The independence ofkosmos/Being itself in relation to the human being is highlighted. An Ode by Pindar and a painting by Andrew Wyeth are also considered. David Spergel Is the Director of the Center for Computational Astrophysics and the Charles Young Professor of Astronomy at Princeton University
David Spergel is the director of the Center for Computational Astrophysics and the Charles Young Professor of Astronomy at Princeton University. He is the former chair of the Space Studies Board. Using microwave background observations from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) and the Atacama Cosmology Telescope, Spergel has measured the age, shape and composition of the universe. These observations have played a significant role in establishing the standard model of cosmology. He is one of the leaders of the Simons Observatory, which will include a planned millimeter-wave telescope that will allow us to take the next step in studying the microwave sky and probing the history of the universe. Spergel is currently co-chair of the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) science team. WFIRST will study the nature of dark energy, complete the demographic survey of extrasolar planets, characterize the atmospheres of nearby planets and survey the universe with more than 100 times the field of view of the Hubble Space Telescope. Spergel has played a significant role in designing the coronagraph and in shaping the overall mission. Since completing my Ph.D. work, Spergel has been interested in using laboratory experiments and astronomical observations to probe the nature of dark matter and look for new physics. Recently, Spergel has been active in the exploration of data from the Gaia satellite and observations made by Subaru’s Hyper Suprime-Cam. Spergel serves as co-chair of the Global Coordination of Ground and Space Astrophysics working group of the International Astronomical Union. At Princeton, Spergel was department chair for a decade. -
