The Price of the Ticket 502 Index 516 Page Intentionally Left Blank ACKNOWLEDGMENTS BORN TO RUN In 1975, writing a piece about what he called the Rock Critic Establishment, my friend and colleague Robert Christgau was generous enough to remark that my “quickie” paperback on Bruce Springsteen might lend new dignity to that benighted form. But I don’t think he thought that my method was going to mean delaying publication for four years. It certainly wasn’t what I had in mind. For me this project has been worth every minute, and I stole lots of them from other things in order to scheme and dream about it. There is a great deal left out, a thousand hilarious stories that just didn’t fit. But mostly, I value this book so much because writing it meant making so many friends. To start with, there was Ron Oberman, who convinced me to listen to Bruce’s first album and wooed me to my first Springsteen show. That I didn’t adequately appreciate either wasn’t his fault. Jon Landau dragged me away from a TV set in Cambridge one night in 1974 and changed both our lives. I remember his exact words: “If I can’t watch Kojak, neither can you. Now get down here.” As he tells it, I introduced him to Bruce, but what I remember about the show at Charley’s Bar is a blur, with the two of us looking at each other from time to time to make sure what we were seeing was real. I also had the good fortune to edit Jon’s Real Paper column about Bruce, in which he uttered the sentence heard ‘round the world, and to see a lot of Springsteen shows, listen to a lot of records, and talk about the man and the music for hours with Jon. So I know why they call him the King. Glen Brunman was more than just a Columbia Records publicist to me. He is one of my best friends, and the nights we stayed up till dawn sorting out the past and the future were some of the best of my life. When I did the initial research in 1975, he was indispensable; when I thought I’d never be lucky enough to be typing the final sentences of this manuscript, the Brahma was always there to encourage me. But I remember more than anything our hours on the phone and sitting around the house—there’s lots more of that guy in this book than his quotes. Obie Dziebzic is a miracle worker. She brought me much closer to my own feelings, not just about Bruce but about rock and roll in general. In a funny way, I’ve always thought that rock ‘n’ roll is more about the audience than the performer, and Oblie is the best fan any rock ‘n’ roller could ever hope to have. That such a person could actually become a friend of mine is as much as I have ever hoped for. There were other fans, too. Hundreds of them wrote me letters asking about Bruce and the book during the period when it lay in limbo; it sustained me to know that so many people were interested in seeing this book come to life. I wish I could thank each of them in person. A few of them, however, I got to know, and they are the faces I saw as ideal readers. Barry Bell and Dick Wingate appear in the text; I thank them again for letting me share their experiences and insights. Dave McGee—who generously shared his file on the lawsuit—Barry Singer, and Wayne King all contributed a great deal to the research.

"Louie Louie" was born in much more prosaic circumstances, as the B side of "You Are My Sunshine," an R&B version of the Jimmie Davis country standard recorded by Richard Berry and the Pharoahs and released on Flip Records in 1956. Berry was a veteran Los Angeles session singer who'd sung lead on the Robins ' "Riot in Cell Block #9," the first big hit for producers Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Whether donating food, money, or labor to community food banks, raising money for the Kristen Ann Carr Fund for cancer research, or saving the Tillie façade on Palace Amusements, Springsteen’s fans draw inspiration from his example. Yet dissention among fans arose when Bruce joined Vote for Change to actively campaign for John Kerry. This paper explores the interplay between Bruce’s activism and fan reaction. From singing at the No Nukes concerts to food bank exhortations from the stage to actively campaigning for John Kerry, Bruce Springsteen has consciously and thoughtfully selected the causes he supports and speaks out on behalf of. Although Bruce played at a benefit for presidential candidate, George McGovern in 1972, he did not involve himself in politics or causes, keeping a low profile. Beginning with the Musicians United for Safe Energy (M.U.S.E.) anti-nuclear benefit concerts, September 22-23, 1979, 2 filmed and released as No Nukes, Bruce’s association with grassroots activism and benefit concerts set the stage for his first phase of charitable work—showing up and playing music. The published interview was not invented by music journalists—it was a staple of Paris Review and Playboy, to cite two antecedents before Rolling Stone came along in 1967—but this somewhat peculiar literary subgenre has always had a special significance in rock & roll. It emerged as a culturally distinctive magazine feature in the late 1960s and early 1970s, which is to say the moment when rock & roll became rock, when it shifted from a largely unselfconscious form of musical expression to a more cerebral, avowedly artistic, one. As in so many other ways, we mark our years AD: After Dylan. In its inaugural issue, Rolling Stone’s first interview subject was Donovan. But the patron saint (or, perhaps more accurately, sinner) of the form was Dylan: charismatic, elliptical, endlessly quotable. For musicians, journalists, and readers, the interview became an arena wherein the intellectual seriousness and philosophical ramifications of rock could be staked out and elaborated—generally free from the scrutiny of those (academics and other old people) who might regard the enterprise with amusement or ridicule. By the time Bruce Springsteen came along in the mid-seventies, the rock interview had already become a fixture not only of Rolling Stone, but also sister publications Creem and Circus, which were eagerly received by adolescents like myself as bulletins from faraway worlds that were simultaneously the locus of our inner lives. Which makes sense because "Born to Run" has the audible ambition of recapitulating the first twenty-some years of rock and roll's public history, fusing a seven-layer Duane Eddy guitar lick with Dylanesque lyrics, Roy Orbison vocal histrionics, Spectorian production effects, Stones-style rhythm section, King Curtis sax break, and subterranean references to half-forgotten one-shot hits from "Little Star" to "Mountain of Love." Critic Greil Marcus once described it as "a '57 Chevy running on melted-down Crystals records," and only the part about the car was metaphor. Celebrated as Springsteen is for his lyrics, it's the music that makes "Born to Run. " The lyrics are still remarkable, sketching a philosophy of determined outward rebellion, a desire to move, a sense of goals and purpose that skirt the edges of the larger-than-life. But this hopeful abandon is tempered by an equally powerful melancholy; the future seems so bright largely because the present's so dismal. Truth to tell, Springsteen seems most vibrant when depicting the kids cruising the Jersey strip: "The girls comb their hair in rearview mirrors and the boys try to look so hard . It's only fitting, because they approached the rock'n'roll scene with guns drawn, armed to the teeth; they were gonna take over, be the Baddest Boys in the Bad Boy world of rock and roll, fuse politics with rock, dope (read: religion), and fucking in the streets and market it all as one neat package, precisely labelled: The Revolution. They possessed roots all the way back to the Crusaders in the eleventh century, they were filled with real righteous American zeal, religious fervor, a sense of purpose and of necessity. This was the MC5, brothers and sisters, the hottest highest energy crew of dudes to come pouring out of the bad-assed Motor City into the American cultural continuum since the halcyon days of the notorious Purple Gang. And what's more: they meant business. Or so it seemed. Despite all the complications, as they say, the reception to their albums has been good, in many places as phenomenal as they knew all along it would be, as they were confident it HAD to be. Their live performances were another question though, especially in those early days. The Five's sets tended more towards flash'n'frenzy than anyone aside from the Who, and the problem was that there were numerous people in the dark days of the late sixties who just weren't ready for shock-rock.

    The Emergence of Punk Rock in Rapid City By Shawn Krush It was unusually warm Saturday night in January of 1986. Dozens of teens and young adults lined the sidewalks of a Knight of Columbus Hall talking in small groups. They were clad in leather coats, long black trench coats, flannel shirts, and combat boots. Their hair was spiked, colored, shaved into Mohawks or any combination of the fore mentioned styles. From inside the building, came a hectic drum beat accompanied by screeching guitar, growling vocals, and a pounding bass line. The same scene had become common in America’s larger urban areas and liberal artistic cities such as Los Angeles, New York City, and Berkley, but this particular punk rock show was taking place in Rapid City, SD, which was neither large (about 45,000 pop.) nor liberal (politically or socially). Oddly, the punk rock scene in Rapid City would evolve into an incredibly tight knit community that was able to attract some of punk’s most popular bands and garnished attention in nationwide fanzines. Some might suggest that Rapid City’s geographical location contributed to the number of bands that decided to play in such a small market. After all, the city is located nearly half way between Minneapolis and Denver. Conveniently, each city was a nearly a days drive from Rapid City (the speed limit at this time was 55), bands could stop in Rapid before moving onto the larger venues1. La bandera confederada en todas sus portadas, el orgullo regional, el agrarianismo rural, y la apología al macho sureño, todo ello proyectado en violencia y provocación, convirtieron al grupo en paradigma del conservadurismo del Viejo Sur. Unlike other hard rock groups, the legendary Southern rock and roll band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, did not emerge from the urban ghettos of such cities as London or New York, instead it came out of the rural South. This "rough and tough and plenty mean" Southern band utilized regional cultural traits to become one of the best hard rock bands that the South ever produced. In 1974 Melody Maker, a major rock and roll trades magazine, claimed that Lynyrd Skynyrd's "brand" of Southern rock music had swept across the Southern states. Band members and Southemers, Ronnie Van Zant, Alien Collins, Gary Rossington, Billy Powell, León Wilkeson, Artimus Pyle and Steve Gaines understood the mind-set of the young rural Southemers who listened to their music; thus they were able to speak for a generation of young Southern men.
