Amen. 4 A BRIEF HISTORY OF MADRAS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE Madras Christian College traces its origin to the General Assembly School founded by the Rev. John Anderson, a Missionary from the Church of Scotland on 3rd April 1837. Anderson was a pioneer in introducing English medium education in South India. He was ably assisted by Rev. Johnston, Rev. Braidwood and Margaret Locher Anderson. Rev. William Miller who arrived in 1862 upgraded the school to a college by adding F.A. and B.A., courses in 1865 and 1867.

    DISTRICT PROFILE - 2017 CHENNAI DISTRICT ORIGIN OF CHENNAI Chennai, originally known as Madras Patnam, was located in the province of Tondaimandalam, an area lying between Pennar river of Nellore and the Pennar river of Cuddalore. The capital of the province was Kancheepuram.Tondaimandalam was ruled in the 2nd century A.D. by Tondaiman Ilam Tiraiyan, who was a representative of the Chola family at Kanchipuram. It is believed that Ilam Tiraiyan must have subdued Kurumbas, the original inhabitants of the region and established his rule over Tondaimandalam Chennai also known as Madras is the capital city of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Located on the Coromandel Coast off the Bay of Bengal, it is a major commercial, cultural, economic and educational center in South India. It is also known as the "Cultural Capital of South India" The area around Chennai had been part of successive South Indian kingdoms through centuries. The recorded history of the city began in the colonial times, specifically with the arrival of British East India Company and the establishment of Fort St. George in 1644. On Chennai's way to become a major naval port and presidency city by late eighteenth century. Following the independence of India, Chennai became the capital of Tamil Nadu and an important centre of regional politics that tended to bank on the Dravidian identity of the populace. According to the provisional results of 2011 census, the city had 4.68 million residents making it the sixth most populous city in India; the urban agglomeration, which comprises the city and its suburbs, was home to approximately 8.9 million, making it the fourth most populous metropolitan area in the country and 31st largest urban area in the world.

    Loyola College, Chennai-34 Department of Physics Loyola Physics Association (LPA ) Annual Report-2017-18 The Loyola Physics Association activities were formally inaugurated by Dr.Govindraj, CSIR-Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute (CEERI), Pilani, Chennai- chapter, on 21st August 2017 at 11.20 am for the academic year 2017-18. Dr. Govindraj delivered the inaugural address on “The Latest Trends in Electronics and Microprocessor”, importantly elaborating on recent developments in research based on embedded systems. The elected student office bearers of LPA for the academic year 2017-18, Vinnarasi N.- Association secretary, John Dcoutho – Cultural secretary (Shift I), Sreekanth – Joint secretary (Shift I), S. V. Iniyan – Sports secretary (Shift I), Aakash – Cultural secretary (Shift II), Subham Bhandari S. – Joint secretary (Shift II), A.Infant Joe – Sports secretary (Shift II). The First event of LPA was an invited lecture by Russian state cooperation for nuclear energy “ROSATOM” jointly with Russian Centre of Science and Culture in Chennai. In this lecture Mr. Andrey Akatov, Senior Lecturer from Saint Petersburg Institute of Technology highlighted the safety and cleanliness of nuclear power. Students and staff of the department of physics actively listened and attained clarity about their ideas on hazards of nuclear power. This academic year LPA arranged many invited lectures by inviting the experts from various foreign universities. To mention a few, “A study of Brown Dwarfs in the constellation of Perseus and an outlook of Higher education in Taiwan” by Bhavana Lalchand, National Central University, Taiwan. Two professors from Tunghai University, Taiwan motivated the students by the lecture on “The World through Expat Eyes”.

    Bertram Memorial Tournaments 2015 83rd Year 2 PROSPECTUS 1. The tournaments commence on 15.8.2015 and the Entries close on 05.08.2015. Tournaments are open to all colleges and universities. 2. The Prizes are: a) A Shield or Cup is presented to the winning team and the institution of the team shall be responsible for its safe custody and must return it to the Principal, Loyola College, Chennai, on request. b) Individual Cups or Medals, Certificates, Prize money are awarded to the winners and runners-up in various games. The eligibility rules to participate in the Bertram Tournaments are as follows: The teams are to be comprised of only bonafide students. a) For Schools : Participants / Teams must produce a bonafide certificate in original duly signed by the Head of the Institution. b) For Colleges : i) Participants representing a college or university in Tamil Nadu must have passed the plus two examination or an equivalent qualifying examination to participate in the Bertram Tournaments. ii) In addition, college team players of Tamil Nadu and Other States must satisfy the current eligibility rules framed by the All India Inter University Sports Board of India.
